And there HAS to be depressing music and lots of explosions.
And exit the room in slow-mo, with your hair trailing behind you.

LOL. Movie-like scenes are so funny.

Do not:
give them hope for future if don't want to get back together in NEAR future. (do not keep them waiting for a year)
make up bs excuses, just tell them the truth. it will allow them to learn for the future.
do:
tell them honestly
tell them reasons
make sure it's clear to them you don't like them anymore.
and, say sorry. probably.
also, if they want to avoid you after the break up, then let them. dont try to save the friendship.
reasons for this?
They will try to get you back. They will think deep down "what if she still likes me a little bit? otherwise why is she trying so hard?"
just let them go for a while, and hopefully in future everything will be normal.

In person is the best way. You can communicate your feelings best, and you can get your point across in ways that hopefully the other person can understand. Best of luck. Just know that whatever you do, someone is going to walk out getting hurt regardless.

*Cough cough*
I set that stuff straight, I'm the man.. and I think if I say an "I hate you" it should be enough to suffice.

I would have to change it to "I utterly despise you" if I saw those puppy eyes.
Your puppy eyes on the other hand...
-You seem like such a lovely person =P I don't know if I would even break up with you.
-Yeah... your puppy eyes are special it hits me right here ---> <3
-Solid~

That's so ... heartless.
don't try to save anything? avoid them because they still love you?
My girlfriend did exactly what you outlined above, but over msn.
I think it's callous the way you guys view breakups...

Thinking of you, wherever you are~
