I recently watched this movie, and really enjoyed it. The cinematography was beautiful. And the theme song is really nice as well. I seldom watch a movie and have it linger on my mind for a long while afterwards haha. I would definitely recommend it. I've heard some people say that the genre is fantasy romance/horror. But it's far from being a horror movie in my opinion, minus that one scene in the movie. It's more like a romance film with some good action scenes starring Donnie Yen.

Painted Skin (画皮) is a 2008 Chinese-Hong Kong film starring Donnie Yen, Qi Yuwu, Zhou Xun, Zhao Wei, Sun Li and Chen Kun. It was directed by Gordon Chan.

The Plot:

Though the story is based mainly on a supernatural premise, it is more of a love story rather than a ghost/horror film. It is based on Pu Songling's classic novel, Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio. Zhou Xun starrs Xiao Wei, a fox spirit (huli jing) that feasts on human hearts in order to maintain her lovely, youthful appearance. When General Wang Sheng (Chen Kun) 'rescues' her from a band of bandits and brings her home, trouble brews as the demon falls in love with the general, who is married to Pei Rong (Zhao Wei).

Another (older) love triangle is present, between the general's brother Pang Yong (Donnie Yen), the general, and his wife. Pei Rong asks Pang Yong for help as she suspects Xiao Wei for what she really is. Pang Yong is aided by an inexperienced 'demon buster', Xia Bing (Betty Sun). Hints of a developing relationship between Xia Bing and Pang Yong are there, although this is never really explored. Another subplot revolves around Xiao Wei's lizard demon ally (Qi Yuwu) who has unreciprocated feelings for her and helps her get all the human hearts she needs.

The theme song is called Painted Heart by Jane Zhang.

ahh I watched this because my cousin kept telling me it was a good movie~
At first, I was like.. meh. A Chinese movie??
But at the end, I was very satisfied!!
It's actually a pretty good movie. I kinda expected to be scary or something but it turns out to be a romance~~

The image of the wife crying drops of blood still remains in my mind <-- I think this is the saddest part~

I watches this movie today and it was a good movie.

I watched this movie yesterday and didn't think it was all that good... Ive seen many chinese story line like this one or similar to this one where another woman comes in and try to steal/take away the man of another woman... another typical love story...

but it was really sad when she cried blood... the demon sure do not know what LOVE is...
then Im so confuse as to why is the husband at the end said to the demon " i love you but i'm married to (forgot her name)"
So what... he doesn't love his wife... he's been married to his wife for many years and he just met this demon... how can he love her so easily or so fast... I understand LIKE but LOVE is another story...

they could of gave Donnie a better role to play... he's such a great actor... sad that his character was not so great...

THIS IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST MOVIES IN CHINA RIGHT NOW.
I watched it yesterday on UUSee with my dad, and GGOOOWWDDD!
This movie made me cry like crazy when Zhao Wei sacrificed her own life to protect her husband's, and when he took his own life shortly afterwards.
Such a lovely theme song too! I downloaded it today, hee hee. Jane Zhang has SUCH an lovely voice.
I do have a bit of an emotional O.E., but I think anyone would be moved after seeing this movie. One of my favorite lines was when after Zhao Wei drank the potion, and she said, "You do not know the meaning of love at all..."
