tongue.gif HEY EVERYONE!

The status of Woman in various areas has come a long way in the past few decades. Yet gender discrimination still exists, though perhaps less clearly or obviously than before, and especially so in Asian countries such as, yes, Korea. Gender discrimination can exist in a variety of different areas. These include areas pertaining to jobs and also status within a household.

Do you think gender discrimination still exists within your country? And if so, in what ways? Is it still prevalent, or on the verge of dying out? What factors go into ongoing gender discrimination in certain countries? Is it just the mindset of men, or does it have to do with the way women view themselves as well...?

Please discuss your views here^^

~~

Also, I have a favour to ask if you belong to any of these 3 groups of people:
1) Korean
2) Live / Have lived in Korea for an extended period of time
3) Have access to Koreans~

As part of a project, my friends and I have come up with a short survey regarding gender discrimination in Korea. We have translated the survey into Korean and need to find koreans to complete our survey for us... Or those who have lived in Korea for long enough to have a deep understanding of this topic ^^

If you fit into the above categories, your help would be greatly appreciated to complete the survey, or help distribute it to Koreans within your social circle!

SURVEY - please click!

You didn't know? WOW. Well here's a rough idea for you. Most developed countries have the equality of the sexes. Most of the developing countries, especially Asian countries, have VERY bad gender discrimmination. Many Middle Eastern countries and a couple of east Asain countries. It goes as far as not letting Women make eye contact with men outside their family, to not being let in certain public buildings because you're a woman.
Cute and lovable!

=_= Personally, I think sexism is stupid. And people who think that it's funny are stupid too. sleep.gif;

Fortunately, it's not as bad as the old days, but women still get poked fun at for "not being in the kitchen" and what not [I got so pissed off I kicked a guy in the spot that doesn't shine >_>; ].

I mean, even my MOM, she's like, "Omg, girls shouldn't do this and that," and I'm like no, shut up. It's 2008 now. Okay. God.

Buuuuut yeah.
School has begun.

Gender stratification has always been around, you just noticed that already? And yes, it still exist today in every country. For example, in the U.S, women who have the same prestige job as men are still being paid less than their counterpart. Also, women are seen as an object of sexual desire which is why they are degraded in pornography.
"Surely there is something in the unruffled calm of nature that overawes our little anxieties and doubts;
the sight of the deep-blue sky and the clustering stars above seems to impart a quiet to the mind."

Ahhh, I'm glad I got some responses, thanks everyone!

^^; Did my post make it seem like I didn't think there was gender discrimination at first? I'm sorry. Anyways... honestly, women in some Asian countries like Korea and China have it worse than in Western countries for sure... They are still expected to act as housewives upon marriage, and many of them find no reason to break away from this. Hence they view their after school-life jobs as temporary ones until marriage. This contributes to employers being more reluctant to put women into high positions and the cycle continues. China with its one-child policy.. while I respect the Government's effort to reduce the overcrowding, it means parents even more earnestly want a son to carry down the family name and upon birth, sexism, sexism, sexism.

I myself stay in an Asian country, Singapore. I think we have it okay here, up to par with other Western countries, maybe? I think women here do have a lower starting pay, apparently due to the compulsory enlisting in national service that men have to undergo for 2 years from 18-20. So the extra pay serves to make up for the time. This is what my (female) teacher explained and jokingly complained about her pay. But at the very least, there isn't that pressure for women to stay at home and be the "good housewife" for her husband the "sole breadwinner".

Once again, calling out ~~
Anyone who knows any koreans or a way to get this survey to a korean forum, your help will be very much appreciated a thousand times over!

Factors? Let's see:

A large amount of women aren't doing anything about it. Sure, there are political and social activists out there fighting for equality every single waking moment of their lives, but a large amount of them still believe it's the man's job to make the first move and to pay the bills on dates.

Want gender equality, don't play silly games like that. Don't expect someone else to bring equality for you when you're promoting inequality in the background. You don't want to play the role of the housewife, why should we play the role of the gentleman? Society conventions? Plz, don't fall back on cheap excuses just to justify one's own actions. Most of the "traditional" methods of doing things are still based on (not-so) historical patriarchal beliefs, so I wouldn't be surprised that people that grew up in a society where men are the majority in power while only a minority of women can say anything, would encourage such "social conventions."

I realize the gender equality you're talking about is different from mine, and that I'm blindly accusing COMMON FOLKS of not doing anything, cause you know, small people can't make any difference anyways.
