I'm a senior and I'm still contemplating if I should apply to NYU or not, any advice?
Take the first step in faith. You don't have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.

I think that school is over-rated. Other than the business school, I don't think it's worth the money to go. But if you have the money and scholarship then apply.......

^ wrong! yes it is over priced, but NYU is still a good school. my professors (for my majors) are some of the best in their field. it's awesome to be taking classes from people who are so well respected for what they do because it benefits you, being able to get the hook up and all. and it's not just for me but for other friends too. then again, I'm biased I really love NYU sooo.....

but that was the big pull for me (aside from location of course): the faculty.

It's overrated, expensive, do not care about giving you any financial aid. If money is not your concern, then go ahead and apply, hopefully for the business program cause otherwise it'll be a complete waste of money as other schools will be a better option in terms of other majors for cheaper price too. Don't waste the application fee if you aren't applying to business.

In terms of faculty, it isn't like faculty at other schools are not on par and really depends on what the major is. And in terms of research in science field, UCLA does a lot more than NYU so if you live in the west coast, you should definately aim for that as the cost will be much more affordable for cali residents.

my friend goes to NYU. it has nice dorms =] it's interwoven with the city, and i personally don't like that. it's too urban for me.

I am currently a student there, and it is way over rated. The only good program is Stern (business) and for pre-med. If your parents have plenty of cash for you to burn, then go the experience is nice.

I think most of the experience would come from living in NYC, since the campus is pretty much blended into the city (as I heard from a friend who goes there -- she got a full ride). Depends on what you want to study too. My friend is studying film, and that does seem like something where it works well to be in the city.

Depends on how sure you are of yourself- even if you can afford to go there in the first place, NYU's not a place where you can play around with majors. I'm lucky in that I've known what I want for a while, there's not much of a chance of me changing. Business and performing arts are big and worth it, but anything else can be worth it if you don't idle around. I'm paying the atrocious tuition, and I'm studying my head off and taking advantage of it. But come smile.gif I need more friends in New York hahaha

They're not that stingy about financial aid. I got a decent amount and my family obviously couldn't afford all of the tuition.
I'm not in the business or pre-med program and I like it okay. The city's nice but sometimes the weather is horrendous.
Otherwise, it's really convenient and the dorms are veryvery nice.

I heard they ARE really stingy on scholarships xD
NYU is really prestigious, I think.. not as overrated as others may think..
But extremeeeeeeely expensive.
Heard the dorms are ugly.

I applied, only to see if I could get in or not.
If I do, I wonder how much they'll give me.

Even though it may be a tad bit overrated.. it'd be nice to say you graduated from NYU.. .-.

I'm currently a freshman at NYU, and I hadn't actually visited before I decided to come here. That being said, I was really unsure about whether or not I liked it in the first few months. I mean, I didn't hate it; it was fun going out on weekends, and the work's not that hard. Of course, as can be said about any other college, after I found my select group of friends, college became so much more fun for me. I "got" a job, sorta, promoting club parties for 18+ kids around Manhattan. I'm in Stern (the business school), and the work's not that bad, honestly. Although I must say, finals week was really bad. I've never stressed that much during exams before.

NYU is a great school because of its diversity and its faculty, but of course there are other schools that are better. NYU's strongest, most well-recognized departments are the Stern School of Business and Tisch School of the Arts. Even though you don't get accepted into either of those programs, it doesn't mean that NYU's not strong in any other department. NYU's a good school overall, but the problem for most people is the tuition. The fact that you could be paying less for the same level program or an even better program at a different school is what gets most people. NYU is one of the stingiest universities when it comes to giving out financial aid. I have to pay the full tuition, which...is pretty inconceivable.

The location can also play a part in people's decisions. I never really thought of location as a big factor, but having been a Southern California-warm weather-type of guy all my life, moving to New York was a huge change. The city runs at a faster and more expensive rate. You should really think about the location and weather. New York starts to get really cold around October, while in California....it really never gets too cold haha.

Anyway, that's my input, but if you have any questions, feel free to ask!

it's in my hometown so i have friends that go there and i have visited a couple of times. actually, i wanted to go there but my parents wanted me to go ivy league, lol. the dorms are not the best and the tuition is very high considering that it is not the most prestigious school. you will be happy if you are comfortable in the city and if you fit in well at the school. it has its own atmosphere, especially in the arts programs.

I don't go there, but I visited and stayed at NYU during Thanksgiving break, and spoke w/ a lot of the Freshmen, and a Sophomore.

When I came I thought it was so cool, just b/c of the fact that it was in NYC, and I love the city. When I asked the students, they said it was of course cool, but the novelty is bound to wear off. And once it does, you realize it harms more than helps. They said that since there isn't really a campus, there's really no school. It just feels like you're a student doing your own thing, so they said there's little to no sense of community or school spirit among your peers.

Uhm, also, when I myself was researching whether or not I should go there, I read a lot of horror stories regarding the administration. Lots of people have bad things to say about the financial aid and say there's lots of red tape whenever you want to get anything accomplished.

As for the price, I know a lot of people say it's really, really expensive (and it definitely is), but I don't think it's any different from any other private institution. It all depends on whether or not you think it's worth it.

roflz i randomly saw this...im actually a sophmore at nyu....it is a different type of university compared to your more tradtional ones...the school revolves around the city many of the courses you will take allow you take full advantage of museums, performances, and art shows...which can be a bit redundant you also have lived in nyc for most of your life [rolls eyes]
staffing is pretty good....well it depends on what field you wanna go into...science, mostly pre-med i heard is pretty good...half of the nyu pop is pre-med xD it also helps that they have their own hospital and dentistry center
there's definitely stern which is always great but always below wharton of upenn...but once you're stern material you really can't deny
the arts is def great plus even if you're not a tisch student...
tuition is incredibly expensive and the school rarely gives out free stuff but i enjoy my classes...you just need to adjust to a more nyc fast going and sneaky looking out for cheap deals life

One word: expensive. If you're really smart and dirt poor OR really smart and really rich then this is the place for you. If you're middle class or just plain poor, don't even bother.
