For those of you that drive, when people ask you to give them a ride do you ask them to give you money for gas?

For example, there was this party at a friend's house and I didn't have a ride (car was at home and i live on campus btw) and so I asked one of my friends and she said "oh well i'm already giving so and so a ride, so unless you pay me for gas...." of course my initial response was WTF?!? seriously?

But any who, has this ever happened to you or have you ever said this to people?

Welllll.
If it's somewhere I'm heading then no, I won't ask for gas money. But if you want me to drive you somewhere that's like, far away then yeah, pony up some cash!
Times are hard, dude lol.

Nahs, I'm too nice for that haha. But if someone's willing to, then sure, I'll take it? After being asian and refusing it a few times. But if they keep insisting, then whoohoo! =) Besides, I'm probably giving them a ride because I want to. Why would I drive someone that I didn't want to?

if it's a long road trip, it's reasonable to split the gas.

if u need a ride home and its not anywhere near the driver's house and there is only little gas left in the car, it's reasonable to split the gas.

Only time I ask for gas money is if it's somewhere far, like when we go to the beach, which uses almost a full tank... but I drive a Mazda3, so gas isn't that expensive, just helps to have people chip in. If I'm around, and it's near me or something, I'm not busy, then why not? No need to ask for money for little stuff.

i usually wouldnt even offer a ride because my mom told me that sometimes if soemthing happens they could sneak drugs in your car and when you get pulled over i guess your screwed lol

but if its like one or two friends im close with then i guess its fine, but if its far away ill probably ask for money

only if its far. For example, this past weekend, my friends and i headed to NYU to visit another friend. the drive was about an hr and half, so.. one of us paid for gas and the other paid tolls. but if its to like nearby coffee shop then no.

Ditto.

One of my friends was always adamant on charging people for gas. It really bothered me. Like she would be the one inviting people on day trips to the beach or something, but then she'd say, "Oh but I need gas money". Like she refused to let the gas level hit a certain level. To explain it better: Say she paid for 1/4 of a tank with her own money. We (the passengers) pretty much have to buy our own gas. However much we pitch in is however much gas she's willing to drive on. Once the gas on her car hits 1/4 of a tank, she refuses to keep driving and pulls over, asking us for gas money. I kid you not it was one of THE most uncomfortable experiences of my life. Her reasoning was just STUPID, and I told her to save everyone time, less headaches, and less drama, I'd just drive my own car next time.

So yeah bottom line, I don't charge friends for gas. NEVER. Even if I were driving like 3 people to Las Vegas, I would not charge them a penny. Not even if gas went up to $7 a gallon. If you volunteer to drive people, you're using your gas, and no one should but you should be paying for that.

Depends on who I drive, my good friends no, girls on dates no.

Kids who thinks I'm friends with them and ask me for a ride, then 1 pay for the gas, no eating, no scuffing up my car, only after I agree to give them a ride tongue.gif

also the g can already run mid 13s stock and the hks intakes adds an estimated 10 extra hp and the exhausts add like 8 so yeah it should shove off about 1.5 to 2 sec off my times

like most people said... if its totally out of my way or pretty far i MIGHT ask... but... usually i dont ask.. and my friends who ask me to drive them pretty far anyways are usually good about paying for gas without me asking.

i never ask but its not like a WTF reaction when it happens. cos i live really far compared to my friends but they've never asked for petrol. PLUS last year petrol was worth a lot compared to now.

Not really. My friend and I usually take turns carpooling, or I'd pitch in a little more if we get some food.

I let a buddy of mine drive my car once, and right after the drive, he put a few gallons of fuel in, even though I wasn't expecting him to (and he only drove a few miles). Things like that tell a lot about someone's character.

Now, I know another buddy...who's, let's just say, on the opposite side of the spectrum.

Most of my circle will split fuel costs on significant trips though. I generally don't ask for fuel...but then again, sometimes I'll ask for fuel from people who aren't even in my car. laugh.gif
