For example, there was this party at a friend's house and I didn't have a ride (car was at home and i live on campus btw) and so I asked one of my friends and she said "oh well i'm already giving so and so a ride, so unless you pay me for gas...." of course my initial response was WTF?!? seriously?
But any who, has this ever happened to you or have you ever said this to people?

oh and i feel like i posted in the wrong forum.. so feel free to move the thread mods!

If it's somewhere I'm heading then no, I won't ask for gas money. But if you want me to drive you somewhere that's like, far away then yeah, pony up some cash!
Times are hard, dude lol.

if u need a ride home and its not anywhere near the driver's house and there is only little gas left in the car, it's reasonable to split the gas.

Not acquaintances I meet on campus and at work.

Ditto.
One of my friends was always adamant on charging people for gas. It really bothered me. Like she would be the one inviting people on day trips to the beach or something, but then she'd say, "Oh but I need gas money". Like she refused to let the gas level hit a certain level. To explain it better: Say she paid for 1/4 of a tank with her own money. We (the passengers) pretty much have to buy our own gas. However much we pitch in is however much gas she's willing to drive on. Once the gas on her car hits 1/4 of a tank, she refuses to keep driving and pulls over, asking us for gas money. I kid you not it was one of THE most uncomfortable experiences of my life. Her reasoning was just STUPID, and I told her to save everyone time, less headaches, and less drama, I'd just drive my own car next time.
So yeah bottom line, I don't charge friends for gas. NEVER. Even if I were driving like 3 people to Las Vegas, I would not charge them a penny. Not even if gas went up to $7 a gallon. If you volunteer to drive people, you're using your gas, and no one should but you should be paying for that.

Kids who thinks I'm friends with them and ask me for a ride, then 1 pay for the gas, no eating, no scuffing up my car, only after I agree to give them a ride

Now, I know another buddy...who's, let's just say, on the opposite side of the spectrum.
Most of my circle will split fuel costs on significant trips though. I generally don't ask for fuel...but then again, sometimes I'll ask for fuel from people who aren't even in my car.
