I've been using Olivia Care bar soaps for about a month now. Hair, teeth, face, and all. I use it once every two days when I shower, then an occasional all-water shower in between. I have to say, my hair's health has definitely improved. It's stronger and feels softer/less oily for a longer period of time.

But my concern is, I'm still losing hair like crazy! Maybe ~20-25 strands when I use the soap on my hair. Much less when I wash with water only. However, quite a few more strands fall onto my floor the rest of the day. Even when I run my fingers through my hair, a couple just come off. For the first couple of weeks, I massaged my scalp in the shower rather gently but strands still fell out. Recently I haven't been massaging as thoroughly because more hair seems to come off, and as a consequence, there's more dandruff and itchiness (as eunbit pointed out a couple pages back). Is this hair loss still part of the detox period? Is this how it's supposed to be? What can I do?

Wow, I haven't used bar soap in years! I stopped because they became slimy and smelled kinda weird (and now I realise it's because they were cheap!). And I kept dropping them XD

But I'm definitely going out and buying a bar tomorrow. It'll probably have to be l'Occitane though because I don't know if the other brands are available in Australia.

metoo i'm experiancing exactly the same thing, exactly, when i massage more hair was lost, i massaged less got dandruff/ ichiness, i am really really concerned, i'm much worse than you, when i used soap i lost about 100 strands of hair and loose hairs just kept falling, i don't deny the fact that my hair is baby soft... but whats the use when half your hair is gone and you can start seeing bald spots. It's soo bad i'm starting to eat vitamins ... with no luck. I stopped using soap and seriously as a girl.. one of the most frightening things that can happen to you is going bald, as vain as it sounds my hair gave me confidence as a woman. i don't know why but my hair follicles have become weaker too, and literally you know how babys have soft hair but its really wispy and thin, thats how it is right now.. i HATE it.. my hair used to be thick and strong

please please i'm not saying soap on hair is bad but just a warning to everyone.. it may not be right for you, if you start losing hair STOP using it immediately, i kept going and like i said, i'm balding for crying out loud! i thought i may have been other factors so i've been waiting to see if others were experiencing the same problems and there has been one or two in this topic whom have had hairloss but also alot of good results.. so just be becareful.

i have no idea why some of us are experiencing hairloss and i hope the topic starter has some answers but yea i look back at photos when i had a full head of hair and people complemented me for my hair and i feel like crying and its made me really depressed (try not to be when you run your fingers through your hair and a bunch or hair just falls out, seriously scary)

** just a note, i'm not discouraging soap or denying the fact its better than shampoo, just warning people that i myself and Poiku started losing hair and alot of it and we have no idea why when its supposed to promote hair growth so yea i'm not here to start an argument

sunny, I'm so sorry to hear about your experience with the soap. But I'm glad that you shared it. I thought I was alone in this. I'm getting more and more worried each day... I definitely don't feel that full head of hair I had, and I'm starting to notice a bald spot forming at the crown of my head. I've been trying to ignore it, hoping that this was some sort of temporary reaction I'm having but nothing to worry about in the long run. I guess this is where I stop using soap on my hair, unless we learn how we can counteract the hair loss and continue using soap. Like you, my hair gives me my confidence. Mine was so thick and full, now I have loose hair all the time.

What kind of hair routine are you doing now? I'm considering just using sulfate-free hair products, but stick to Olivia Care for body/face/teeth. At any rate, I hope your hair becomes as full as it was. I'll be working towards it too.

And I too am not denying how great all-natural soap is. I love that many people have gotten great results, and hope many more benefit from this. But not everyone reacts the same to everything. The soap is great for my body, face, and hair itself, but my hair follicles are just not happy with it. I hope we can get some feedback, but I'll be trying to look for some info online as well...

Okay, I just tried out my brand new soap from the local health food store. I was feeling a bit trepidatious at first because of all the hair-falling-out/feeling-waxy experiences that other people had, but it wasn't too bad! My hair was definitely very waxy after soaping but I used an ACV + lemon rinse and it felt much better. Not as smooth as after-conditioner hair, but I can't complain. Will wait and see if the texture improves.

Also, I love the smell of my new soap! <333

hey hun.. i feel you, i had no idea what impact soap would have
at the moment i keep using soap on my face because i've had relatively good results there
i have no idea why our scalps have reacted this way, it just makes no sense to me, i've tried searching online but there is no information as to whether soap can damage your scalp i mean why should it right? its all natural and better than all that chemical junk but its doing me worse than any good it did with regular shampoo.

you can try go sulfate free, i did i tried sulfate free shampoo and conditioner but i continued to lose hair that way, i suppose i could try i different brand see if they work but i'm too scared to experiment, my hair is so thin i don't think i could dare to try new things on it.

right now i wash my hair everyday with water like you and only shampoo when its dirty, usually every 2nd day and condition when i feel like its needed. I just use tresseme which has ammonium sulfate, funnily enough very slowly and i mean veerryy slowly i'm seeing less hair loss.

i really really don't understand why my hair reacts better to chemically intoxicated shampoos and conditioners but it just DOES...
the only theory i have is that soap was a too big change to our hairs and it couldn't handle the detox period , it may have something to do with hard water? i honestly don't know.. it could be that the soap dried our scalp out making hairs fall out easier, i also thought that maybe all the chemicals hid the damage made my hair look healthy and strong and soap stripped it to the real state it was in flimsy and weak

at the moment i couldn't care less whether soap is better for you, i'm going to stick to my old bad habits of shampoo and conditioner.. its what worked for me before and i will continue it and think twice before experimenting with new ways. I even used to use a curling and straightening iron regularly and experianced no hair loss before i used soap

it will really be a looong time before we get our hair back, i hope at least in a years time i'll be back to my old hair, i mean i'm still young so hair growth shouldn't be a probelm ( i HOPE) just that i'm losing it faster than it grows =_=

sigh.. i really hope you gain your hair back too, i mean people don't understand until they experiance it but thinning hair is really traumatic i'm really hating the weightless feeling of my hair.. don't get too worried, the more you stress about it the more hair you'll lose so keep smiling cuz our hair should grow back =)

I bought a soap with vegetable glycerin in it. I'm thinking about using it to brush my teeth but I'm a lil unsure. Is vegetable glycerin bad also?

did anyone else have this problem and what did you guys doo?
i feel really frustrated cuz i tried so hard doing the soap thing.

and my routine was just wetting my hair, then smooth the soap over my hair and rub it and then rinse.
I also use the olivia care soap too.

before i would shower every other day with shampoo and conditioner along with body wash products.

now in the mornings and evenings:
cold water splashes
witch hazel toner (rub on hands then on face and neck)
aveeno radiant moisturizer
brush teeth with soap

when i do wash my hair/body it's with one soap bar and i massage my hair pretty thoroughly

washing my hair with soap has definitely made it less poofy and out of control.
when i started the soap poo regime, i used dove soap and that made my hair feel great.

i'm currently using YARDLEY soap bar and technically it has two compounds that Eunbit said are not good: glycerin and titanium dioxide.

so anyways, has anyone else experienced extreme skin peeling of their index and middle fingers? like the tips? those are the fingers i use to massage my scalp and it is pretty bad at the moment. it started with the dove and still continues with the YARDLEY...

besides that, i still have dandruff in some areas and it's quite bothersome. i'm going to stick with the soap poo for a while and see how it holds up, but so far, my dry scalp has been the same.

yer supposed to use all natural ingredients and dove contains bad ingredients too.

^ I have the same problem. I've been doing this for 5 months

I had very fine hair to begin with. Up to now I probably lost 1/4 of my hair. Its so obvious that I cant wear it open anymore, I always have to wear it in a bun or ponytail.

As for my skin: I got through puberty without any acne and had very clear skin but now I'm breaking out like crazy.

If it hasent changed till the summer holidays I'll go back to my regular routine even though its more expensive and allegedly more harmful

I'm seriously considering a short hair style

I've been lurking this forum, The Long Hair Community, for the past couple of days and these ladies know tons of methods for haircare. I don't think it matters whether you have short or long length. Here's a thread on all the crazy abbreviations they use for methods and products. I also find their articles are good reads.

Anyway, I tried to find something relevant to our problem of hair loss with soap bars and all I could find for now was this. Her story may not be the same as ours but many have been saying it's because it's springtime shedding? Her post is relatively recent. Nonetheless, they also suggest different methods for her. Many women use ACV rinses, which was brought up in this soompi thread too. I think I'm going to try that and the conditioner-only method and ditch the soap for hair for now. I'm afraid of losing more...

Sorry about all that rambling about this LHC forum! It just seems like a good resource and starting point. I also hope we get some answers on our situation. It's very worrying to see more saying they're experiencing the same thing... In the meantime, I'll keep lurking the internet when I can! (mustnotstress mustnotstress...)

I never lost much hair, actually I lost less hair I think after switching over to soap. But I know eunbit has said that she has lost hair when she was going through the detox period.

^Ooh, thanks for mentioning that, puppy! I looked through the thread and found eunbit's post on her hair loss. But the other girls and I who have lost considerable amounts of hair are actually noticing it. Bald spots forming, hair lines becoming more sparse, etc. So maybe this is still part of the detox period? I dunno... it just doesn't seem right. Or maybe we have to space out our soap washings even more?

How often do you wash your hair with soap? Maybe we are doing it too often...

I wash my hair every other day. Have you been combing your hair right after you shower? because that might cause hair loss too.

^Ahh, I see~ and nope, I towel dry for at least 20-30 minutes. So I usually end up combing when it's very slightly wet.
