In AP Bio, my teacher does not teach (no surprise there). She will tell us things like "Oh read unit 6 in your book for a quiz in two days". I find it really hard to memorize so much information when it's not taught to us. I was wondering how you guys would deal with this. How do you memorize textbook information?

I usually do flashcards but they don't seem to work perfectly =/

ohh i hate teachers like that LOL.
um, well depending on the subject..
i normally just skim/scan through the part in the textbook
[depending on how long it is..]
and i'll normally take like jot notes?
and mainly concentrate on the important parts XD
so i'll like highlight/underline what i think i need to know..
.. that's how i pretty much went over stuff for my exams =/

depends on the text book LOL.
like some have so much useless info o.o;

also, i forget what it's called..
but sometimes i'll make up one of those things..
that like spells out a word or stands for something? X:

hmm.. flashcards sound like a good idea (x

I find that memorization is one of my strengths. I try to apply what I learn in textbooks to my activities. Doing flashcards or re-reading 100 times over isn't a good way to study. Unless that's how your mind functions, go ahead. To fully understand the concept and the facts you need to dig deep.

I jot down notes and highlight stuff. (thats my favorite part) i find that writing things is quite effective.

Thanks for your input guys. I feel like I'm already doing all of that though. I highlight my textbook, write things down, and then transfer them to notecards =/ Oh well. Maybe memorizing just isn't my stronger point.

I've never really had to worry about memorizing but when it's time to cram for a unit test or something I use repetition analogy and another method. When I was in 3-5th grade with those vocabulary test's my teachers would make us write the vocab words down 3 times with the definition for homework, I thought it was stupid then but actually writing something down it sticks in your mind a little bit more because your writing it out word by word in front of your eyes. Another thing I do is use analog, easiest way to remember or learn things when you can compare it to something you know by heart. But the thing that never fails me is the whole "relate this material to something unforgettable" I remember one time I made a song about the order of mitosis last semester because I would always get anaphase and telephase mixed up and I sang it in my head while taking the test lol Or while I'm studying with friends one of them starts crackin jokes and I can always look back and remember what material we were joking about. Things along these lines help me.

i just read it over or just basically stare at the page for like a few minutes before i go to bed.
or do it before the test if it's short information to memorize

For me, I like to relate the information to myself in some way.
Even if it's something goofy, you'll remember it even better.
Make the information meaningful and not just words from the textbook, xD

For example, my Anatomy teacher told us a way to remember which names is the thick/thin filaments of a sarcomere..
If you say actin with a lisp, it sounds like "act-thin" which then you remember it's the thin filaments..
Or my sins [myosin] are very thick.. Silly things like that, but it works.. biggrin.gif

I have AP bio and my teacher gives out essay questions a few day before the exam with the answer. I find it really effective to write and memorize in other work repetition for me.

I have the same problem with memorizing so I never actually read. Anyways I tried reading out loud to myself at home last week and stopping after a few paragraphs to review the main points and then I went on until I finished. I thought my quiz was pretty easy. Even though it was 5 multiple choice questions, you couldn't skim the 9 pages and find all of the answers. It was for AP Government if that makes any difference.

Highlighting and notes work too. Just test out everyones advice and see what fits you the best because we're all different.

Memorizing is one of the hardes for me, think how my input in school is then...

Well, I usually try to read everything or just some parts for a start. Then, I try to read under the lines, what does the text want to tell me:P
After that, I just try to ask question I made up and answer them later on without the text near my sight.

Hopes it helps thought...

I had the same situation last year.
I did horrible on her tests, failing some, mainly in the 70 and 80s which is horrible and low for me. I only got an A on her tests once. I learned to pay super close attention when she speaks. As for the chapters and homework she wanted us to read and learn from, I never really memorized to well. And my main concern then was passing the AP test because I can still try to keep my grade up with labs and daily homework and classwork grades.

Then I found a AP Bio prep book and it got alot eaiser. It pinpoints what you need and no extra information. I ended up being the one to pass the test when some of my friends that always made high A's on her tests didn't pass. Because of that I LOVE prep books and need to get one for APUSH because i'm in the same situation now.
There goes my life story of ap bio...

I've never taken AP Bio but I've taken other college level courses where I had to read books. I have this bad case of curiosity kills the cat that tops off my need to just study my butt off because I'm not naturally smart. I always wonder "what did I skip/miss?" when I skim the book so I just end up going back and reading everything through LOL so yeah... I just read everything slowly and thoroughly. I will reread a passage if I feel like it didn't make enough sense to me. Yes, this does take a lot of time and sometimes it feels like it's too much time, but better safe than sorry--especially when you can't depend on your teacher's guidance/help from anything/anything else. x:

I also read out loud sometimes. It sounds a bit silly, but for some reason this really helps me out. Helps me concentrate and remember things.

Also, sometimes what helps is explaining a concept to someone/just explaining a concept out loud to yourself. That way you'll figure out your weaknesses because you won't be able to give a good explanation of whatever it is you don't understand as well. (:

sorry for the jumbled up response o_O

something one of my AP teachers made us do was make a chapter outline/study sheet type thing where you had the limit of only one page... so we had to basically comprise the whole 30-40 page chapter into one sheet. You should have a more than decent understanding of what you've read if you do it good/correctly because you would have had to look through the chapter and figure out which facts are important/needed to know. It sounds a little ridiculous, but it's actually a really effective way of reviewing information so I definitely recommend this if your course is book-heavy. I haven't taken AP Bio so I wouldn't know X: ... good luck one way or another!

I just summarize and write them down on flashcards. It usually works for me.

For biology concepts I used to write essays to prepare. Since biology is mostly concepts, I would write everything I know about the topic without looking at notes or the book. Hand write it by the way..typing doesn't help with memorizing that much. Then I check the information I wrote with the text book and see how much I missed or got wrong.

The AP Bio teachers in my school makes their students make outlines of the chapters
you can try doing that, I guess that really helps because it makes you read & type it out at the same time

Hmm, I think I can memorize pretty good, but it goes right out the other ear in a few days.
I remember just from carefully reading? Takes a HELLUH long time though
