Compatibility Issues laugh.gif

* I wasn't sure if I should have made a new topic or posted under The Official Dslr Thread ...

Anyways I have an old fashioned film Nikon N70, Nikon SB-26 Speed light and ...
Lens wise a 80-200mm Nikon and 35-80 mm Nikon (It says AF NIKKOR on the Lens)
Both of the lens are for the camera that i mentioned.

My dad gave me the camera and I wanted to get a Dslr particularly the D40x/60/80 (a starting camera)

Do you know if the lens will fit the D40x/60/80?
If it does should i buy just the body?
What other stuff should i buy if i buy just the body? (ie. memory card, tripod)
Do know a good site that could get me started in photography?

And should i get the D40/60/80 or is there another camera that you can recommend?
... Actually i don't know which of three i should get

Out of the cameras mentioned, I think only the D80 will autofocus (and manual focus) with the lenses. The other cameras will be able to use the lens, but you'll only be able to manually focus.

^If you can afford it, the D90 is better obviously. The D80 has the autofocus motor inside the body and the D40, D60 don't.

the d80 is the older model. d90 is newer than the d80 by 2 years. the upgrades include a new CMOS sensor, live view and a 3inch LCD like that of the D3/D300. that said, the d90 is a better camera. whether or not it is worth the upgrade is up to the user. to some people, having the best is worth the premium. to others, it's not.

I would suggest the D80. If you can afford it i would definitely get the D90. But between the 3 that you have mentioned I would suggest the D80.
I have the D40 for about 2 years ish and I'm ready to trade up to some thing more. It just doesn't have the ISO range or the type of flexibility that i would prefer. if you get the D80 you would be able to use the slr lenses you all ready have, but if you get D40 or D60 you would look into getting a F mount lens i believe some thing along that line. but look into the D90 if you can.

ahaha. Thanks. The d90 seemed really expensive compared to the d80 despite the extra features the camera has. Not sure if i can handle the camera since i barely have skills.

The d40 is actually a really good starter camera, but once you start to truly understand the capability of he d40 you start to want to take your photography further, well at least thats what happened with me. i felt as though i grew out of the d40. with the d80 or d90 you can grow into it learning all about all the cool things you can do with it. you can go to a camera shop like ritz/wolf camera and ask to try out the cameras them self. also bring in the lens that you all ready have and ask them if their compatible with the d40/d80 and possibly the d90. if those lens are compatible with the camra bodies then you can buy the camera bodies them self which is a good 200 to 300 dollars cheaper.

By the way i forgot to mention that he d40 also doesn't have a auto focus motor in the body its self so if the lens you all ready have may or may not have a AF motor in it your going to have to manually focus your images, thats one of the big draw backs with the d40. hope i helped one bit.
