I know most of you guys aren't lawyers but I was wondering if anyone got caught for street racing and could just give me some advice. I hope this is the right section...
Okay so I just moved to a new state and my friend told me about street racing in her district so I wanted to check it out. We were waiting in a parking lot with a couple of other cars and the cops showed up. I panicked and I tried to flee. The police caught up with me and gave me a big ticket for exiting a private parking lot without stopping and driving without the lights on. He also told me that my car was on a list where my car couldn't enter the racing district or I would be pulled over. So basically, I don't know if the cop recorded on his statement that I was street racing or not. Because he didn't include it in the ticket. Also, this is my first ticket so... yea.

So I'm supposed to go to a mitigation hearing soon and I really don't know what I should say to explain my circumstance.
Should I include the fact that I was there to watch street racing? Was anyone ever caught for street racing or similar circumstances?
And does anyone know if these charges are considered as a street racing ticket... because then I'm so screwed because my insurance will go up. =[
Any advice would be helpful!!!
Thanks

EDIT
But it didn't state on the ticket that I was there for street racing... only exiting a private parking lot without stopping and not turning on my lights. So when I'm explaining myself in court, what should I say? How am I supposed to explain those charges? Don't I need to explain my circumstances? AND I also don't know if I should include the fact that I was trying to flee from the cops. I know it's better if I don't of course but I'm worried that the police cops statement given to the judge may include all these facts and if I don't tell the truth, I'll just come off as a big liar.

Sorry for all the questions! and I did look at the car section but no one had any similar questions so I posted here.

EDIT
Thank you everyone. Your replies were very helpful. I'm usually a very good girl lol but I watched way too many fast and furious movies. And plus I went with my friend and she obviously didn't know what she was doing sleep.gif

Never doing that again. ever. T_T
Thanks again!

Simply put man. You're screwed. Fighting your way out of a street racing ticket is near impossible. Why? Because it's your word, an alleged street racer, vs. a police officer. I've had friends who have had street racing tickets. Everyone one of them lost.

And no, you shouldn't include that you were there to witness illegal street racing. You were there to cruise would be a much better answer.

You are also in the wrong section, we do have a car section.

Do NOT say you were watching because then you were supporting. If he didn't write you for "racing" then he didn't. Also mention you're new so maybe the judge will be light on you

Don't even allude to the concept of racing. You tell them you're new to the area, wanted to drive around and see the area, panicked when you saw the cops, made a stupid decision, one you are positive you won't make a again. Also tell them next time you'll snoop around in the daytime to avoid getting mixed up with anything illegal like that, because you're a good kid and don't like trouble, just Calculus (<---something to that effect).

You had better be dressed in a full suit, clean hands, clean hair, and make sure your hair if it's styled funky is more formal and presentable. Appearances mean a lot in these. Also have good posture, speak clearly, use no vernacular, only clean and clear English. Keep your statements clean and simple, don't make up a complicated story, just stick to one simple one, and be ready to dodge questions meant to make you slip up.

I'm not sure why a lot of these people are not supportive. You have not been cited for street racing. You have been cited for leaving a parking lot without stopping and without headlights. The first part means you could have killed someone when they were crossing the parking lot. The second part means you really would have endangered someone's life since they didn't turn on your headlights. I believe these are moving violations, however I'm sure you can fight it off. Just find a good lawyer to help you out. How long ago did you move to this part of town? If it was short, you could tell them that you were new to the area and was just exploring. You saw a crowd gathering and was curious to check it out. While leaving, you forgot to turn on your headlights and was not sure that was the exit.

well I got a ticket for being at a race but I was racing but I won't that case when I took it to court but as for you long as you were not racing or long as he didnt give you a speeding ticket then your fine. Just see if you can take defensive driving or do some major community service hours to see if you can get your case dismissed.

well here is a good website to see if you can get your ticket dismissed

Also, NEVER PANIC when you see a cop just be cool because he won't pull you over unless you did something wrong.

say u were getting tapioca or something, and was just leaving but forgot to turn on headlights.

If u do have a hearing though, and the cop shows up, you're not in the best position to argue a case, cause I'm sure he has in his notes that u were at or near a street racing scene.

If I were u, I'd just pay the ticket, go to traffic school and be done with it. If u have to show up at the hearing, like others said, don't mention anything about street racing or watching or spectating a street race. If u do so, you're basically incriminating yourself.

So I have a choice between showing up in court or sending in a written statement. Which one do you think I should do? Because I was hoping that I could get the fine reduced or not get any points if I showed up and made a good impression. Because if i just pay the ticket, don't I still get the points?

I don't think either will put points on your license. But don't take my word for it, you should find out yourself.

I believe it's better to show up. A written statement is a pish posh method to get you out of this mess.

for a friend of mine, he had a ticket for not having his lights on.

the exact line was - "i'm a student, it was my mom's car and i wasn't use to daytime lights so it looked like my lights were on, and i really can't pay it in full at the moment is there any possible way to do community service"

he didn't have to pay the ticket, but he had to do an afternoon[3 hours] of charity work at a hospital.

does that count as a win?

GO IN. They will be far more lenient if you show up, are truly remorseful, and present yourself well. Much better way to go.
