I know however, I want to be an elementary school teacher and I plan to open my own day care. What I major in doesn't really matter because I'll be enrolled in a program that will equip me to be a teacher
Honestly I say that everyone should major in something they are passionate about instead of working a career solely for money. If you don't know what you're passionate about, take courses! Waste of money? Not exactly, you're still acquiring some kind of knowledge. Otherwise, take time off travel, see the world and see what kind of jobs ARE out there. If you get the chance, do co-op it helps you see what you do want to do.
Hm, that's probably all the advice I can think of right now. Brain is kind of fried from writing a response thing for school. Cheers.

when i first heard about biomedical engineering i knew it was for me ^^; i've always loved math and science and the inner workings of living things. in high school, i tested out of a few math classes, ap bio was a blast and physics was amazing.
good luck figuring out your major!

I'm a Classics and Studio Art major. I chose them because I love each, and I could do careers from either.
But something you need to know is that your bachelor's degree doesn't always determine your career or even your major for your masters. I could go to law school or med school or become an archeologist or a teacher or a translator or a designer or in advertising or ANYTHING.
Don't stress about what job you're going to get with your major, unless you're set on science or engineering or something. Because outside of those strictly technical fields, you can do anything!

^ OMG me too! T_T I ended up getting a C- in my programming course and I withdrew from the university...
But yea, for the initial poster, my best advice to you is to listen to your parents and then think about what your strengths are and if they two are compatible, then go for it. Otherwise, just try weighing the pros/cons
That "do whatever makes you happy" thing is 99% bull. There are a lot of other things you need to take into account. From the look of things though, you're going in the right direction

The major you choose is often with you for a long long time. Thus, I think ppl should choose the major they love, not the one their parents (or somebody else) love!

i WISH i could do what i want, but i feel obligated to do something to please my mother. i don't even really know what i want to do...so i guess that's why i'm doing what my mother wants me to do? i guess...i have 3 other sisters, but basically i feel all the pressure since my sisters all picked things they like to do -- things that don't "earn the money", or make my mom proud enough to brag to other people (art, writing, etc...) it's an asian thing. and my mom's pretty stressed out enough trying to pay for our college tuitions, our mortgage, and other bills by herself since my dad died a year ago. basically, i want to keep my mom happy -- and i don't really mind doing it. sometimes.
and, i kind of narrowed down my major by...what i dislike/what i'm not good at. i absolutely SUCK at science, and i semi-suck at math. i suck at english too. so i picked managerial economics. a lot more math than i though. =/ but it's okay so far.

Same here! I want to please my parents but, at the same time... I want to do something I like. I tried to incorporate what, as you said "earns the money", with something that I personally love.
I'm thinking about majoring in International Business. I personally love traveling, and I know that business -- in some way, gets me the money.

So if I wanted to do a diff. career, I can always go ahead and head for it without having to do school all over again.

Plus, people are always so impressed when I tell them I'm a neuroscience major, haha. (Then they'd ask if I want to go to med school and I'd tell them I don't even know what I want to do with it but I'm sure there'll be something.)
I think choosing a major is not only about what you're interested in but also what you see yourself doing. I don't trust new-found interests all that much. There was a time when I actually felt like science classes are sooo boring, and I was having a lot of fun with classmates in my intro to philosophy class so I considered majoring in philosophy. But then I realized that's not really who I am. This also applies to possible careers a major might give you. If you don't see yourself living with a job that doesn't pay much, then it doesn't work to just "follow your dreams."

Cliche but true, I picked what I love doing most.
One thing that helped me was doing internships and stuff before hand.
But for the longest time I think since I was like 11 I wanted to do this, haha.
I do get weird looks when asked about my major, especially being Asian and all.
