Blizzard has an internship up for my major but the thing is, my major doesnt really have anything to do with what the intern position is. I'm in industrial design and Blizzards intern position is for 3D landscape/environment (hehe probably for starcraft II or diablo III)
so does anybody here know what major things like 3D character/environment design would fall u nder? its not really illustration since it's all computer based.. maybe a branch off of computer programming? COULD it be industrial design?
thanks

industrial design could include landscaping. a few years back, landscaping was hot as real estate was on the rise. hundreds and thousands of cookie cutter homes with landscapes that varied from a handful of designs. creating 3D landscapes for a game may not tie directly with your field, but it's good as games are all about visual and experience. when you work in industrial design later on, you will have to think over the concepts of form and functionality, and i think you can do that when you design 3D environments.
how will you create an environment that makes the user feel like he's somewhere else? how will terrain and props in the scene determine battles and give one team and edge over the other? etc.
as a sidenote, 3d design can also be part of computer science/engineering, film/cinematography and art [digital]

Wow, thanks for the info watcher - was really helpful.. Yeah, ID is a very broad major so i could definitely see it include landscaping somewhere in there. Thanks again

i donno if this is too late to answer but from wat i know this internship could fit you depending on things
theres obviously the raw fine arts talent that is required but im will to bet that they may require you to be able to input those designs into Autodesk Maya or some other kind of 3d program
i noticed in your sig you go to RISD, so you definately have the fine arts background and if you pick up Maya at least then you should be qualified
the only thing is just realize that this is going into the world of gaming, but if that is wat you want then this is it!
however if you are aiming more for the real world industrial design and if you cant find a better internship, this would atleast give a bit of training as well as work experience
now to answer some of your questions,
there is no one major that this falls under, instead its a mix of fine arts and computer engineering
the concept, itself, falls under fine arts pretty much, since it is heavily dependent on someone with good traditional art skills (they dont want someone who can just draw stylized characters)
the 3d aspects of the position, is more of wat Watcher said, either computer engineering/cinematic arts, depending on which department in your school offers the courses
if both department offers it then to be specific computer engineering is more program based where as cinematic arts is more fine arts based
as ive kinda said before, this could work for your major if you want to go into gaming, the training is pretty much the same just instead of your work being put out into the real world, it goes into a video game =P
okay i think ive talked alittle too much, i hope it helps and its cool to see another (possible) game designer =P, i've been looking at blizzard too
im a fine arts major and a 3d art for games minor
