Does anyone own any of these cameras.
If so which one out of those two would you recommend the most? Especially if it's a person's first dslr.
What are the pros and cons of them.
It would be nice to get a good comparison between them before I make a choice.

Nikon D80

Canon EOS Rebel XSi

thank you.

I think a fairer comparison would be maybe D80 vs 30D/40D. Anyway between those two, the XSi is newer by two years, so I'd get the XSi.

This is actually a project I have to do. And the range I was given dollar minimum. So I was told that I had to choose 2 cameras one from a different brand. So this is why I'm having a hard time choosing between one of them.

Ahhh you can always ask the DSLR thread; or read some things people have said about both cameras smile.gif
the XSi has been said to be a good camera and was named the best DSLR camera last year?
I think smile.gif

d80 wins in ergonomics. it'll feel better in your hand and sturdier too. and if you are using the 18-55mm kit lens, nikon builds better kit lenses

xsi has live view and is very portable/compact. you lose the sturdiness though. it's not weak, but you'll know what i mean if you try holding both of them. xsi also takes SD cards [if you already own a point and shoot, you might have one of these around. saves money from buying another memory card if you do]. xsi also have a larger LCD [3.0 vs 2.5 of nikon]

both will produce great images. can go wrong with either one. i will base my decision on what you enjoy using more. so go test it out!

I own the XTi and I bought it after they announced the XSi (so it was cheaper but anyways) LiveView is probably the first reason I would take the XSi over the XTi given the same opportunity over again.

I've used the D80 and XSi before. I would highly recommend the D80. The XSi feels like a toy ( and the shutter sounds like a laser beam lol ). Also I never really found much of a use for Live View.

ive just actually recently sold my d80 and went for the d90 when it was first announced. (if you can grab the d90)
The D80 is somewhat of a middle weight camera (or "prosumers") where the rebel XSI SLR being more of the novice and low end SLRs - it main direct competitors being the Nikon D40/60. They really in different class imo. From my experience The D80 was an awesome camera, and highly recommended, but like i said if you can go one up to the d90, where you get much better noise controlled pictures (due to the new CMOS picture) among other perks (live view, auto dust reduction, 720p video record etc.)

Like what zgnoud said, the XSI isn't the rival of the D80. I'd probably say the Canon 40D would be the D80's competition. I also sold my d80 right away and bought the d90 when it was first announced. If you have the money you can go for the D90.

Then may I ask if I were to choose between the XSi and the D60, which one would be better for amateurs?

The best camera for amateurs is probably the Nikon D40. D60 isn't much of an improvement from D40. For Canon cameras, the best amateur camera would probably be the Rebel XS.

Ah, thanks for the input. smile.gif
I was wondering if the XSi would be like the D60 and D40 where it doesn't improve very much from the XS? (Not sure if that made any sense mellow.gif)

you wont be missing out on too much if you get the xs. auto-focusing is slightly better on the xsi, and it also has a nicer, larger screen. but the subtle differences are minor until you start shooting more often, and you can feel the limitations. and even then, they're just minor inconveniences. at the end of the day, it's worth the price if you get what you need and you enjoy using it. i've always believed that a camera's worth was greatly tied to a person's experience. if you like using it because the screen is bigger and more colorful, then the extra money is worth it. tongue.gif
