ok my current trial anti-virus protection is about to expire and i want to download AVG since its free.
after i download what do i do next? uninstall my current virus protection?

Typically you don't want two antivirus software actively protecting your computer at the same time since they tend to interfere with each other. So yes, un-install your previous antivirus, reboot, install new antivirus. If you feel extra paranoid then unplug yourself from the Internet while doing so.
