just wondering, is jump roping a cardio exercise?
does it help you to lose body fat?
and also, does it help slim and tone down the calves?
cause i really want to start jump roping but i'm afraid that my calves would get more thicker and muscular..
oh and does it affect your upper body in any way? cause i really don't want to get wider shoulders than i already have T T
sorry for so many questions>_<

any advice would be appreciated!! smile.gif

You wont gain muscle or get bigger from jump roping. But, its a awesome cardio workout if you can do it for long enough. So if your diet is in check and your eating at a deficit and doing your jump roping for cardio, you would lose bodyfat.

Definitely helpful, I lost a lot of weight by jumping 1500 each day, of course combined with healthy food. ^^

i read somewhere that jumping rope for 10 minutes loses 100 calories
its not that much, but if you increase the minutes per day or do hardcore jump ropeing, you could probably lose a few pounds in a month alone from jump ropeing
:)

Wow... I should start jump roping. It never even crossed my mind. I was always lazy and I don't wanna go running around my neighborhood so jump roping would be perfect. It's fun too. smile.gif
Some say i'm a genius, others say i'm crazy
but they all say i'm a little on the weird side

You can not target fat loss. All you can do is exercise and make sure your at a caloric deficit in your diet. Genetics will decide where you lose the weight smile.gif.

I've been doing jumproping for over 5 months or so, I think. I used to start off with 50~100, but I do 1,000~2,000 these days. I feel like I need to restraint my intensity a little because my foot started aching. ._.

Personally, I think jumproping is a great work out, but you have to remember the fact that the more you want to lose, the more intensity you need to take. I lost approximately 5 kgs due to jumproping, I think.

Out of all body parts, I think I could see a big discrimination of my calves from before.

Get orthopedic support in your shoes or better shoes. If you're skipping you should go by time instead of how many
rotations you do. Also if you can do 1000 - 2000 you should increase your speed a lot and start doing crosses
and etc. You can get a great workout in like 30mins from doing those things.

jumping makes your whole body shake and your head too~ if you jump rope too much it'll cause your brain inside to shake and thats not good for your health... like after a roller coaster, you know how your head hurts, its cause your brain had been shaking during the ride..
and for your knees and legs--excessive jumping can even harm/injure yo u
<its like running alot and damaging your knee cap cause your bones in your legs are hitting each other constantly>
i used to run every day for around 1~2 hours, sometimes even 3, thinking ill lose a lot of weight fast that way, and i stopped after i noticed my foot making a pop sound like when you pop your fingers, except it was any time i moved my leg...and it hurt too...ive stopped running for a month and now the popping has gone away, but anyways~~
i suggest anyone who does over 1,000 a day to be careful.
(haha that was a bit long... sorry)

I'll be first to call bs on the brain thing. Look at professional boxers and tons of other pro fighters and athletes. They
all skip a ton and do tons of other cardio. They're fine. Also if you have good shoes when you skip your legs should be fine.
Improper practices lead to injury just like anything else. Also obviously it's not like the average person is gonna go at it everyday
over extended periods of time. That's why it's better to have other low impact cardio exercises such as biking to supplement and
switch it up.

I skip rope daily.
Some days i do high intensity reps of 30 seconds others i do a more two minute rounds.
Started skipping rope two weeks ago and im already impoving my grappling endurance i dont get gassed as much after 15 minutes on the mats.

Skip This Workout

By: Liz Neporent

When personal trainer Lucie B. says jumping rope is just what the doctor ordered, she should know, she is a doctor. This physician turned
fitness guru holds a degree in medicine and a national championship title for speed and power jump rope.

"After winning a gold medal at a regional power-jumping contest in 2002, I left medicine and never looked back," Lucie B. says. "I decided to
dedicate my life to helping people get fit by jumping rope." She's now one of the top instructors at the New York Health & Racquet Club, a
premier fitness-center chain based in New York City.

The way Lucie B. teaches it, jumping rope is one of the fiercest fitness experiences you'll ever have. It's a supereffective way to burn fat,
increase stamina, improve coordination and firm muscles. It's a speedy calorie burner too—you can burn more than 200 calories
in just 20 minutes, as much as running a 10-minute mile but with half the impact on your knees and ankles. As she puts it,
"You get a killer upper- and lower-body workout that really kicks butt!"

Do it two to three times a week, and you'll feel leaner, stronger and faster in six weeks.

I think I might start jump roping too. happy.gif

I jump roped in my dorm room to get daily exercise. It's great cardio.
Good for your heart, you sweat a lot, and it's fun.
BUUUT, i resulted in muscle mass too like in the biceps, thighs, buns, and calves.
I got fit, but got a little bulkier too rolleyes.gif

Some bad stuff is that I didn't have great arch support and balance so my feet hurt in the arches and I got dizzy a lot.

You need something that will give you support, such as cross trainers, basketball or even tennis shoes.
Do not wear running shoes as they will not give your feet enough support.
