if it's a huge problem for you, go talk to your teacher. most teachers are cool enough to discuss it with you.

I'm inclined to believe the same thing; your teacher wants to push you, though they're being a bit indiscreet about it. Try talking to your professor at office hours or make an arrangement (most students don't know this, but professors often get stipends for stuff like coffee and lunch that they don't always use, and the less they use it the less they get the next semester) to talk about it. It's usually better to discuss it openly and make sure everything gets cleared.
