I own an HP Mini 1000, and after a few adjustments I was quite satisfied with this netbook.

1. I couldn't stand running XP or MIE, and having only 16 GB of SSD space, I did a clean install of UNR and was left with 13 GB of space. Ubuntu runs quite smoothly on the HP Mini, and the only difficulty I had was getting the ALSA drivers downloaded and compiled for the sound card.

2. I removed the tinted film from the webcam bezel which made a huge difference. If you're not using the webcam outdoors, this modification is practically necessary. You should be careful though, as it might void your warranty.

3. I installed Samba in order to network Ubuntu with my Windows network, which is where I access my enclosed 1 TB HDD. This is obviously useful if you've got a Wi-Fi setup at home.

4. I've upgraded the memory from 1 GB to a Corsair 2 GB and this only took a matter of minutes. Like the webcam tint, it's seems as if the laptop was purposely designed for these physical modifications. Note that upgrading from 1 GB to 2 GB won't give you any noticeable results, but I did it anyway since it only cost $25.

There are a couple of things I haven't been able to fix. The VGA cable is basically non-existent as HP hasn't released it yet. The 3-cell battery heats up like hell, so I've basically gone from 2.5 hr of battery life to only 2. I'll probably upgrade to a 6-cell sometime soon. So, besides that, everything works like a charm. I'm not afraid to say that I'm proud to own an HP Mini.

[Edit]

Microsoft Office 2007, Adobe Photoshop CS3 in XP, Adobe Photoshop 7.0 on WINE, all run wonderfully on this thing.

Aside from saying "it's a personal preference," care to elaborate on why?

^ fits all the conditions of what I'm looking for in a netbook minus the premium on the latest Samsungs. End of the day it is a "personal preference" because for the most part netbooks in the same class are roughly all the same except for the factors which contribute to aesthetic design and battery life. Toshiba is sort of late in the game with netbooks compared to others but I just personally love it's design. It doesn't have the GN40 chipset but no need for it so don't care. Netbooks aren't like regular laptops where you really have a lot of variance (at least not yet). Minus some core technical attributes, there isn't really much about netbooks that you have to think too hard about other than "does it fit your personal needs/wants" (IMHO of course). I have no intentions for a netbook every replacing a full notebook (which I have a Macbook Pro for) so aesthetics and battery life was pretty much it for me as my primary use is for full portable web browsing, working on documents, and remote access (ssh, rdp, etc).

I really like the toshiba nb-205...until i tried it at the store. The keyboard looks nice (chiclet sony style), but the key travel is minimal...not enough in my opinion. Other than that, it's pretty much the perfect netbook.

also, Ion chipset is comming soon, probably start shipping in Q4, so "netbooks" will be much better i think, full HD capabilities, a little more gaming, and better power management too

but so far, it seems like only Lenovo announced a Ion netbook, which is a 12" netbook, S12, which is a little bigger than the usual ones

Thanks for that response. I'm going to law school and I need a small laptop/netbook to type notes on and carry around to-and-from class. I've already purchased a basic mid-range desktop (general home office use; no gaming, vid/image editing) to use primarily at home. I just need a basic "something" to get me through the day without weighing me down too dramatically. I'm pretty sure my school doesn't even utilize exam software so that's not even a major issue for my requirements.

But I meant more generally: Why do you consider Toshiba & Samsung the top-contenders in the netbook arena?

What is this "key travel is minimal" you refer to?
And lol! Netbook are evolving so fast if you ask me. I've been looking at them since the end of June, and already, Samsung has released two new[er] models than the original one I was looking at (NC10) and Toshiba came out with its netbook. If I've going to play the "I'll wait until next round of better technologies" for netbooks... I might as well never get one! haha. My friend told me that around September/October, there's going to be a whole new generation of netbooks that are even better. I don't have until October to wait! I need one in about... three weeks!

Okay let me preface this by saying that I LOVE samsung..
I really really do.. and I have tonnes of samsung stuff including phone and mp3 player

but I looked at the toshiba and samsung netbook models..
and honestly.. it's almost identical to acer or asus and any of the other brands..
and even less battery life =X
I don't really see why they are 100-200$ more expensive.. you're pretty much paying a premium for the brand name and not getting anything nicer.. because even the design is nothing special

so yeah.. if you have the money to blow go for a samsung or toshiba.. but i'd wait for their prices to drop because you're not really getting anything more for your money besides the sticker with the brand name on it =X

it's when you press a key on the keyboard, it doesn't push down very far. Much less than a desktop keyboard..., so it's a bit hard to know if you actually pressed the key or not..That's why i found it a little bit uncomfortable to type on, and the keyboard layout seemed a bit weird, but that's probably because i'm not used to it, and that i've never owned any laptop before. (meaning im used to type on a full scale keyboard all the time)

either way, if it's available near you, i think you should consider trying it out in the store first, then if you like it, you can order online wherever it's cheaper. (i tried mine at future shop, they have the other version with the non chiclet keyboard at my bestbuy)

Samsung, yes. But the Toshiba's battery life is right up there with them. The Toshiba is presently considered the best netbook in its class right now from the keyboard style to the larger touchpad and its looong battery life.
And as far as I've seen -- I don't see a $100-200 difference (if you look at comparable models all with 6-cell batteries; the 3-cell batteries do lower the price considerably). At most, I've seen a $50 difference.

Oh. I see. Thanks! All laptops are like that. You'd probably just have to get used to it. I've tried out the Toshiba keyboard and found it... fine to handle. It's also relatively quiet too.

I got my Asus EEE 1005HA in the mail today. It works perfectly well. I'm loving it so far. The keyboard took a little bit getting use to though. The only problem that I have with this netbook so far is the adapter. It's so small that if you just move just a little bit it'll fall out. But hopefully it won't be needed as much since this has a battery life of 10.5 hours (I have yet to test it out -- will do so soon and let you guys know).

Other then that minor problem, it's been good so far.

Oh yeah, any recommendation on DVD drive for an Asus EEE 1005HA? And does anyone know how to turn off the zooming feature on the touchpad?

Does the Asus 1005ha with the 10.5 hr battery life not come in white? (Cause I'm paranoid about all the fingerprints and smudges..)
I've only seen it available in white with the 1005ha-v model..

From my knowledge, there is not a white one for the 1005HA-P -- it's just black and blue. The finger prints aren't that bad. I carry a wiping cloth inside my sleeve, so I can wipe off any unwanted prints and that works great for me. =)

...You could try waiting? Sometimes the "colored" netbooks take awhile to release. I know because I've finally settled on a Lenovo S12 (primarily because 12'' is a HUGE screen upgrade from 10'' and not too much of a "downgrade" from 13'') and so far... the white one has only released in certain areas (and not the online store I'm looking at). I'm a fingerprint magnet too -- but that's not enough to deter me from getting a good solid "netbook" (technically, the Lenovo is not a netbook, lol. It's a genuine UMPC -- Ultra Mobile Personal Computer).

But, personally, black & other dark colors are more professional. I'm entering law school, and I don't know how often I'm going to come across this -- but let's just say I was lucky during undergrad that I only needed to do a powerpoint presentation ONCE (especially now that I'm realizing how rare that was) . And my professor provided a laptop for us to use in that instance. It'll just look more professional to be presenting from my sleek (if generic) black laptop rather than a bright pink, blue, or green one. As for the white -- personally, I think only the MacBooks got it right. Or maybe it's just the glowing Apple that makes everything look okay.

But I can't afford a MacBook. Otherwise I'd be jumping that bandwagon too.

i finally decided to throw some money on a netbook since my little nephew took over my desktop playing game all day. i was in love with the asus 1005ha but opted for something cheaper. i got the MSI U100-641US N270. now to wait on for windows 7. also got a extra stick of 1gb ram, but i've never owned a laptop so hopefully it isn't a pain to open and add.

Thanks! After listening to you guys + family's suggestions, I decided to buy the black 1005HA-P.
I ordered it on Amazon a couple of days ago and it finally came today and I'm typing on it right now!

The only thing I'm not too thrilled about is the speakers.. but I think I'll be using earphones most of the time, so it won't be that big of a problem~

But overall, everything else is REALLY nice and I'm definitely glad I bought this smile.gif

After a lot of consideration I decided to get the Samsung NC20. I looked in stores and got a lot of information on which netbook would be the best for me. I loved the Asus 1005HA and a lot of people on this forum are positive about it as well. I just couldn't handle the keyboard and the small screen. Not the best choice either when that's all I'm staring at for the next four years. -lol- It was a real bummer... For real T.T because I was in love with the Asus.

Samsung NC20 got an 12" screen and an almost full-sized keyboard, which is great for me. Battery-life is somewhat shorter than the 10" screens, but that's quite logical really. I have yet to test it, so I'm quite curious myself. They say 6 hours approximately if used under the right circumstances.
I'm really satisfied about the screen-size, because it's just perfect for me. It's not too big, but also not too small. I don't have to scroll or anything like I did with the smaller netbooks. The keyboard is just lovely. I checked the Asus 1000HE and its keyboard seemed kind of unstable to me. I pushed it down with my hand and the whole keyboard was kind of 'bouncy' ? -lol- It gave me the feeling like I could break it anytime soon. The NC20's is nice and firm.
The design is very simple. I personally like the Asus one better because of the 'Eee' beautifully and elegant on the black color and its thinness as well. The NC20 is compared to smaller netbooks of course heavier, but remains portable and fits PERFECTLY in my backpack. Glad I didn't purchase the 15" laptop I wanted earlier. I absolutely adore those lights on the edge of the netbook, giving it a slightly futuristic feel.
The speakers were very loud. It sounds good and not as bad as I expected. Definitely enough to listen to music or watch videos. They were located on the bottom of the netbook though, but isn't that the same for other netbooks? I haven't checked, so I wouldn't know. I don't mind the sounds of it though.
I was at first kind of hesitant buying it, considering some people had trouble connection to Wifi. Right when I started the netbook and logged in, an balloon thing popped up saying it found several wireless internet-connections. There were a lot and I had no problem whatsoever when it came down to it.

Pros:
- Screen- and keyboard sizes.
- A higher resolution because of the bigger screen.
- Well-built and firm.
- Directly connected to Wifi.

Cons:
- Battery-life [since it's shorter than most netbooks]
- I expected more USB-ports coming with the larger size.
- The price is far higher than 10" netbooks, while there's not THAT much difference.

All in all I absolutely adore my NC20. It's everything that I need.

Edit; didn't know I wrote that much T.T
