The latest intel montevina cpu, combined with integrated graphics and a larger battery gives some of these ultra portables like this Lenovo Thinkpad x200 up to 9 hours of battery life
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=272634

unfortunately this Dell Mini 9, which sports an atom 1.6ghz, and an SSD drive only gets 3 and a half on a 3 cell which is typical of netbooks of this type
http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=4578

of course, the Thinkpad has a larger cell battery, but I don't think there are too many battery options for Netbooks yet.

There are several models in the link below which boast 7+ hours of battery life and I'm just looking at Asus models. Some even have regular hdds. So even if we equate this to "realistic" battery time, I would expect 4-5 which is still a great feat... no???

ah yes I see. That one definitely can because its battery is a 6 cell compared to the 3 cell used in the review model I gave. Will you go for that one?

Isn't it the same price increase if you get a netbook or notebook? Warranty price for either should be the same?

I meant the value of the total package [notebook/netbook + warranty]. A netbook should be less expensive, but the prices that we have currently just don't seem right to me. The price difference in terms of value does not make me want to get a netbook. I would rather go with an older thinkpad x series model even if I had to pay a little more because the total package of the x series has better specs which means better value than tossing more money out to get a higher number of cell battery than the one included.

But I still want a netbook so bad though...

I was wondering if a netbook has 8GB SSD, how much space would you have left after installing windows xp and openoffice or microsoft office? 2GB? How usable would that amount be? Would that be good enough for virtual memory with 1 GD ram? Am I going to experience a slow down due to low memory?

6GB? Forgot how much space XP Takes at min install. For office stuff and email and internet, these things are pretty fast.

Don't expect to watch 1080 HD Streaming videos thou, haha.

I would say you need roughly 3GB space for windows XP Installation + another 2 to 3 GB for different programs and drivers you install later on.
Its advisable to keep 10GB free for the drive on which you are installing Windows XP so that you do not run out of space and dont get your Virtual Memory Space messed up later on.

well at the moment, a netbook is generally cheaper (and smaller) than most notebooks, this is because they use low spec'd processors, small hard drives, and do not offer much in terms of performance. Its like comparing a bike to a motorcycle. If you don't plan on doing much and need portability, a netbook may be for you.

there are of course, exceptions to this. The Sony P is one of the most expensive netbooks, and costs more than many notebooks. Sony is aware of this and they try to market it as a notebook, yet its specs clearly indicate its in the same league as a netbook. Also there's the Dell Mini 12, which is as large as a small notebook.

Maybe after 2 years or so, the difference between netbooks and notebooks will become blurred as powerful and cheaper processors come into being, more ports, video card options, etc become available for netbooks.

How limiting is the atom chip? From what I read it seems far faster than a VIA C7 but mhz to mhz its still smothered by core2 chips. I wonder if i can find a atom vs P3 benchmark o.o *goes to google*

Umm Atom is much faster than P3...that processor is more than 10 years old? A more accurate comparison would be to compare it to an Intel core solo or to the Pentium M. Coming from a Core duo (1.6 ghz) notebook, I don't notice that much of a difference.

Yeah looks like it, http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1281628 super pi 1min 48sec

Hard for me to imagine it comparing with anything, I think my desktop and laptop does it in about 40sec but either way ~2min is less than the ~3min (170sec on a p3 1ghz random google) but it does have a clock speed advantage. Do the atoms all have hyperthreading?

The P3 design isn't that slow the Pentium M is pretty much just a modernized P3... Ah even the early eee used Celeron M rather than going to P3. Interesting.

well using those super pi scores alone, the Atom score is roughly comparable to the Pentium M generation.

Takes up 10 GB? That's a serious amount. Does this include office programs too?

How is the performance though with windows 7?

Looking to get the el wife a netbook. she would use it for surfing the net and writing emails. She would leave her heavy notebook at home.

I have it narrowed down between the Lenovo S10 and the Samsung NC 10.

The Dell mini was in the running...but....meh.

Erure...how's the Samsung??

Between the Lenovo and the Samsung, I like the Samsung a lot better and I am qualified to say this because I used both smile.gif The Lenovo's battery life is a lot weaker too (3 cell vs 6 cell)...

i have an ACER netbook along with my macbook pro..
honest to god, the netbook is so slow that i can't do anything on it. and battery life doesn't last too long either.
the only good thing about it is that i can bring it around (since it weighs NOTHING compared to my MBP)
i mostly use it to take notes in lectures... and that's it. rolleyes.gif

since most netbooks have similar specs, I think many agree the samsung is one of the top if not the best one but I hear they will be discontinuing the NC10 soon and will release the NC20 in the very near future.

Dell mini series aren't so hot but they do tend to be part of some interesting deals from Dell.. the best I saw was buy an XPS, get a free Dell mini.

its probably not a good idea to install vista or 7 on a netbook.

yeah...on AAEFES, there are some pretty sweet deals for the Dell Mini, that's they only reason I would get one (cost factor).

What's gonna be upgraded and different on the Samsung N20?
