i dont know if it's always been like this......was at a red light, look at the rpm and it was at .5 on the gage...........i never really looked at it much, but i guess it just felt quiet so i looked and was little surprised, later when i started the car and left it in park it hovered around 1.5 before slowly dropping back down to .5, is that way too low? or is every car different?

what car do you have? generally .5 is pretty low. if u start up ur car cold it will idle at a high rpm and as it warms up it will lower down to a little under 1 usually.

I think most models are different, depends on what kind of engine (4-cylinder, V-8 are very different), size, class, so many things. My current car, a Mazda3, idles around 600 to 700rpm. I used to drive a Jeep, that thing idled around 800rpm.

If your idle isn't stable, it can be several factors, such as the Idle Air Valve, MAF sensor or (if applicable) the throttle position sensor. Vacuum leaks are also a big issue when it comes to high idle.

Typically most cars idle around 600-900 from what i've seen.

Sometimes even the motor oil quality can affect idle, i remember on my first car, putting in synthetic caused a drop of 100RPMs (not that thats a problem). This car had some sort of a mechanic idle air valve which couldn't compensate automatically.

Mine idles around 700RPMs but when it is cold it goes to about 1.2k RPMs. I have a few after market parts as well so that is to blame as well. As long as it is below 1k RPMs you should be fine.

Many modern cars use a motorized or solenoid driven idle air valve, which means the ECU has direct control over the idle and cannot be adjusted manually.

If you drive a automatic transmission, having the higher idle (as a problem) will raise the temperature of the transmission fluid hotter (and faster) while stopped... so that is a side effect of high idle as well as waste of gas.

Usually when I encounter cars with a high idle issue, the first thing I check is vacuum lines. If it has a low idle which is below spec, then I would check the IAC valve as it may be clogged or not working properly.

Everyone can find out what their idle should be, just open the hood and in the passenger side corner of the hood there is a emissions lable that states the idle specified for the car. I'd say a 50+/- within the specified idle when the car is warmed up is normal.

just spray carb cleaner every to check the vac leak, if not then spray it in your throttle body.... should fix ur idle issue.

also the g can already run mid 13s stock and the hks intakes adds an estimated 10 extra hp and the exhausts add like 8 so yeah it should shove off about 1.5 to 2 sec off my times

As long as you don't feel your car vibrating, then you're idling fine. My cold idle is at 2100 rpm on really cold days. My normal idle is at 750 rpm.
