I think I have ADD and here are the things that make me wonder if I have ADD.
- I always zone out during class I find myself listening but then suddenly on some other topic or day dreaming without realizing it until I'm way behind in class notes
- When having a conversation with someone sometimes I look at the things going on behind the person I'm talking to rather than making eye contact with that person. BUT I do think I can hear what they're saying, but sometimes I do have to ask them to repeat what they just said. Lol sometimes the person I'm talking to turns around to see what I'm looking at. They notice my distraction.
- Sometimes I'm really hyper. A lot of people comment that my 12 year old sister sometimes acts more like the older sister. But I'm not always hyper, it's just random spurts after random times.
- I am SO impuslive in my coversations. I say things that don't have relevence which sucks and also lead to my self consiouness. I say thing and people are just like WTF and just ignore the comment I made. That lead to my self insecurity because I felt/feel like people are ignoring me because they hate me or I said something very wrong.
- I have bad temper tantrums. Sometimes my mom comments that she's scared of me =/
- I don't read things fully. I always skim, even when I try not to my eyes just wander over words without comprehending.
- After an hour of a tutor or one on one session with a teacher I find myself jittering, figeting and trying to get the hell out of the place. I can only think about getting out rather than whatever the hell is going on.
- I find myself thinking of other things while reading, but I know that a lot of ther people are like that as well.
- Sometimes I stutter and jumble words
- I have so many thoughts in my head at once. A lot of people comment saying "I wonder what goes through your mind"
- I'm indecisive
After reading that website I think I have ADD. I don't know how to confront my parents or where to get checked.
Okay now other stuff that I make me question whether or not I have ADD
- I'm organized. I make outlines and calendars and planners all the time to organize myself (this might be due to my eating disorder though)
- My room is always clean. I can't do homework or work or anything without a clean environment (maybe ADD, actually - not sure)
- I can get work done and I'm a A/B student

Here’s to all the places we went. And all the places we’ll go. And here’s to me, whispering again and again and again and again: I love you

And the room being clean thing is more OCD (Obsessive compulsive disorder) rather than ADD.
I don't see what the problem is with confronting your parents if you're actually worried about it.
So just tell them you think you have ADD and you want to see a doctor to be sure.
Maybe you can just get checked with your regular family doctor?

Seriously though, if you think you have ADD I suggest just go see a doctor.

And although I do know that people do the things I mentioned in the first paragraph I don't see it as severe as the way I do things.
But if it's not ADD it's probably just a case of too many things on my mind at once.
Which can relate to everything mentioned in the first paragraph haha.
Also a lot of people have said that ADD is something you get as a child and I've actually confronted my mom about this in 5/6th grade which is about 5-6 years ago. The reason why I don't want to confront her about it again is because she denied it totally and said I was perfect and that none of her children could me mentally impaired. So I think she's just in total denial and that if I do end up confronting her about it I have to do it right so that she doesn't just dismiss it but actually listen to me for once.
Thanks for the feedback so far though (:

Besides that, a lot of people have the same symptoms. In fact, I often do everything you listed except the tantrums. I don't think you have ADD though you may have a minor case of OCD with your cleanliness.

It's weird, I posted that on this forum and most people are saying no.
I posted it somewhere else and a 75% are saying yes and the rest are saying no.
Well I talked to my mom about it, and again she said I was being absurd
BUT she did say I could get checked, but I'm going in March-ish (when I get my sports physical done by my dr.)

It's not from the food. I'm pretty sure. So changing what you eat wouldn't affect it.
IMO ADD really isn't such a horrible mental disease as many of you seem to suggest. One of my brother's best friends has ADD and my bf was diagnosed with ADD/ADHD. They're both PERFECTLY FINE people.
My bf was diagnosed with it I think in high school? And he took ritalin before, the more common medication these days is Adderall, which he also took. But he didn't like the way the medication made him so he stopped taking it and he can control it on his own. He graduated college, is working at Morgan Stanley and is taking classes online to get his masters in finance (which IMO takes MORE concentration and patience than regular class - I can't make myself learn everyday like that! lol) - so you can see that he's living a normal life.
The signs that you listed are kind of like ADD, especially that one about when someone is talking - there was a study done on ADD teen drivers and how they tend to get into more accidents and stuff because they tend to start drifting their attention onto things going around outside rather than the car in front of them, traffic patterns, etc. If you're really worried about it and it's beginning to seriously affect your work/you can't concentrate on the things you should, then try to see a doctor about it and try out some medication. You'll eventually find what works best for you.
I understand about the mom situation though. My mom was "scared" when she found out that my bf has ADD but when I explained what it was and how he is doing and how it's really not as bad as the image is, she's okay with it now. Try sitting down with your mom and talking to her about it a lot. Get info from websites to tell her, have her go with you to a doctor, etc.

I was just wondering if I had it or not (: Having more focus would definitely help.
Thanks for the advice (again)

A typical ADD test involves putting someone in front of a screen of some kind and testing their concentration by watching how many times they look away from the screen. Testing for ADD is actually very straightforward.

Hmm A.D.D. just describes how you are the good the bad and those characteristics were around prior to the application of the term A.D.D. and will continue to exist into the future. It is how you counter the cons and take advantage of the pros that determine where life will take you ~
Try listening to trance when you study
Learn proper communication : the book - > You are NOT the center of the Universe - it is for college communication courses. Great book ~ You don't confront your parents you just go to your school counselor and see if your school has the health services to determine that and give testing or find testing for you. Generally all colleges and universities offer this along with other services you just have to go ask whats available.
When communicating with people. Think before you speak, hell before you speak, consider what you are about to say, then speak. Young people with or without A.D.D often times make this common communication error. Along with not fully listening before a line is read or someone finishes speaking -> this is as well common not just to A.D.D people. Concerns about self-image are common to everyone.. Be aware that you are lumping A.D.D. and the general issues of ALL young people into the same boat.
It doesn't make you disabled though. Don't develop some victim complex. It is just how you are built and lots of young people have to "grow up" which means learning how to take control of their mental facilities and how to counter-act hormonal fluctuations as well. Take responsibility for your lack of attention and discipline yourself and focus, this is something you'll have to grow up and learn to manage. Just like over-emotional people that act, react, and speak under sway of their emotions regardless of whether they are right or wrong.
Personally I think it is mumbo jumbo and just another way to describe one type of person. Prior to the school of psychology the description of those with A.D.D was not formalized for thousands of years. Those millions and millions of people did just fine without making baby faces and freaking out - whining at a cruel cruel world. They did something about it and came to grips with their issues or they did not. So simpo.
What is the real benefit of declaring A.D.D ? taking advantage of the liberal education system ~ early registration for classes in college, free money from tax players, getting a letter grade bump up etc. There are lots of benefits and advantages - take advantage of it if those programs are available. A good excuse for taking money reserved for those issues!
When you hear of good multi-taskers in business or other fields you would probably find that those people growing up could be associated with A.D.D ~ what made them different from failures is a good work ethic, discipline through parents or themselves and motivation through self or some reason otherwise.
End ramble .. since there are so many A.D.D threads and chats this is kind of boring to talk about
Oh there are plenty of other music choices ~ classical, ethnic, hell listen to frogs mating ~ I am not advocating any specific thing but letting you know there are many many ways and there is no one perfect way or one size fits all.

IMO, I just think this is another bogus thing someone decided to coin to earn $$. Medications for ADD/ADHD have serious risks and really, what do we learn from taking the medication to control the ADD/ADHD? Nothing really. It's like an easy way for a parent to calm the child down, without actually teaching them to manage their issues.

What makes you so sure that additives like MSG does not cause ADD, ADHD and numerous other illnesses?
The harmful effects of MSG are heart problems, cancer, ADHD, autism, growth disruptions, learning and behavioral problems, hormonal imbalance, obesity, damage to the retina, etc.
Many problems don't become obvious until puberty. This is caused by poor functioning of the hormones due to exposure to MSG in the first few years of life.
MSG affects many parts of the body: heart, muscles, nerves, circulation, stomach, intestines, eyes, respiration, skin, etc.
Dr. John Olney discovered in 1969 that MSG caused brain damage and obesity in mice.
Governmental agencies such as the US Food & Drug Administration insist that flavor enhancers are safe. But research that shows the safety of MSG is always financed by the food industry itself.....
Do yourself a big favor and remove this poison out of your diet and your health will definitely improve!

Tons of foods have things are are carcinogenic. Does it mean that if you eat it you will get cancer? No.
So your reasoning that cutting it out will prevent you from getting ADD is ridiculous.

He's usually HYPER yells at the other kids (instigates them by calling them names) sings songs about butts and barbies, and sometimes he just throws himself on the floor.
HOWEVER other times, he can be really quiet; just reading a book on the sofa or doing his homework.
He also likes to make wise cracks -- like I'd ask why are you talking to ____ and he'd be like I wasn't! I was talking to my imaginary friend.
Ugh, there are WAYY too many instances where I just wanted to hit him .__.
But it sorta sounds like you might have ADD -- you should talk to your doctor.
ANDD I believe bart simpson has ADD. Yes, I said Bart Simpson from the Simpsons.
Well at least thats how the creater justified his behavior.
There was one episode when they gave him meds and he got all quiet and nerd-like.
But then Marge didn't want to keep him on meds so yeah, hyper Bart again.
lol, sorry just wanted to share~~
