Five-ninths of a school's faculty are women. Five-eighths of the male faculty members are married, and 60 of the male faculty members are unmarried. How many faculty members are there?


A marching band needs to raise $13,500 for a trip to the Rose Bowl. The director told the band members that one-third of the amount that has been raised so far is equal to half of the amount that is still needed. How much more money needs to be raised for the trip?

for the first one if 5/8 of the male faculty are married it means 3/8 of the faculty are unmarried. so 60 = 3/8 of the total faculty. (60/3)*(8) means there are 160 males. then if 5/9 are women then 4/9 are male. 160 males is 4/9 of the total faculty so if you do (160/4)*(9) it means theres 360 total.

for the second one you need 13,500 and I'll just say X is the amount raised. and (13500-X) is then all that is still required.

so a third of the raised equals half othe remaining
(1/3)X = (13500-X)/2 i multiplied by 6
2x = 3(13500-X)
5X = 40500
X = 8100 so you still need $5400
