I don't think so.
Cause all the times I didn't get a tip when I use to work as a waitress.
I should sue dry.gif
Never again! >_<
But I think some restaurants do automatically add tip to your bill. I like those smile.gif

I thought it was a given in the States, because of the low wages the waitresses get. I once heard that the owner of a restaurant called the cops because a table of 20 would not give tips after their meal blink.gif

But I know in Europe and Australia it is not necessary to tip, because the tips are included in the prices, you only do it if you want to.

I always tip (in CA the tip is supposedly double the tax of your meal). If I'm out with a group of friends, then we split the tip.

I've never not given tips. If the waiter or waitress was an ass, I'd just give them crappy tips

prtty sure its not illegal. its just customary. it'd be kinda weird if its required by law b/c you would essentially be determining your own price. not everyone tips the same percentage and how would you determine if it was legal or not if one person tipped only 1% while another tipped 20%.

labor laws do say that restaurant owners may determine the hourly pay of the waiters with tips in mind. they are able to pay waiters below min wage with the expectations that tips will make up for the remainder.

thats probably b/c most restaurants have a sign at the front door that says a tip is automatically added for parties of 6-8+. the sign is basically an agreement with the customer that if they dont want to tip, then dont eat there. thats why the restaurant would call the cops when 20+ people refused to tip. but i really dont think the cops can do much legally b/c those signs are just part of customary agreement. it wasnt a legally binding agreement.

btw, dont quote me on any of this. everything is to the best of my knowledge.

I agree.

If I didn't have the money to tip, I wouldn't eat out. If the server is rude, give them a 5 cent tip or something to let them know that that's all you think they're worth. Haha I'm too passive-aggressive.

Tip is optional $ for the waitress/waitor based on their service to the customer. It is not illegal to not pay tips, but quite rude if the server provided good customer service to you.. Take it into consideration that waitresses/waitor do not get paid a lot on their hourly wage...so they make their living off tips + their paycheck.
Generally, if the server provided good customer service and did her job (asking you if everythings alright..etc)...that's 15-20%...and pretty much goes down from their depending on their attitude+service.

Some restaurants have a policy where if you have an x amount of people in your party then it's required to tip x percent - but then agian, that amount is automatically added onto your bill. Otherwise, no it is not mandatory to tip despite good service. It's just good etiquette.

I wish America was more like Australia/Europe/Japan where tips are not apart of the culture.

You have to check your bill before you decide to fork over the extra.
Some places automatically add it in cause they know their customers forget or don't bother paying *coughchinesepeoplecough*

So essentially you may end up giving twice the tip.

I'm pretty sure it's not illegal.

but i mean, the person served you and was bent to ur every will,

the least u could do is tip them for obeying ur every order. its rude not to.

i dont think its illegal but its rude and the waiter/waitresses will get mad >__<"
at least some tip is good ^^'

like once my friends and me we ate at this restaurant where we were the only students there and when it started to get crowded, they wanted to kick us out so they directly just gave us our check when we didnt ask for it (we werent all done eating) and one of the waitress told us "remember to leave tip",,, it was really rude but its still mannerful to leave tip so we left two dollars folded so it seems like $4 and shoved it under a plate and ran away~haha

I used to be a waitress, and let me tell you, I LIVE off my tips. My wages were chicken scratch.
Students and kids, I don't expect to them to tip.

If my service was bad, leave a penny. At least I know I should improve.
If you leave nothing, you're just cheap. I despise cheap people... so inconsiderate. dry.gif
I always leave tip, even if I have to eat something cheaper.

tip less if they poor service :/

i know a cat that would never tip the cocktail waitress a measly $1 for drinks in vegas. and i thought that was bad.

later i found out his sister is worse. she never tips PERIOD.
