My wish is to get into a university and pursue in a career that I like. I did want to go into health care until I found out my final mark in Chemistry. It was a 75. I did horrible on my exam..I got a 50%. That led me to depression because the teacher suggests me not to take that course in grade 12. Now, I have no idea what I want to go into. I admit that I studied very hard for that exam. I researched career sites. Nothing interests me. With my low overall average I'll never be able to go into health care. I don't know what to do anymore. I was so depressed yesterday, I even thought of committing suicide. I feel that no matter how hard I study for tests or exams, I never get above 90+. It is always in the high 70s or low 80s.
I need to get into university. I must.
If I go into college, my parents would be disappointed in me. More than disappointed.

But how?
I don't know what career I should go into=no goal=don't know what to do with life.

Soompie...provide me some advice?

I am in grade 11, grade 12 is where universities look at your marks.

Your still young... You don't need to make your career choice right now. If you really want to go into a university than apply and see if you got in. But, if your still don't know what to do by that time I suggest you go to college and find out. And college shouldn't be DISAPPOINTING it's a place for you to explore possibilities. And the thought of committing suicide is down right stupid, and I see that your a smart cookie.

I have a friend that got into the top universities and a full ride to Standford. She didn't know what she wanted to do yet so she went to a community college to figure out what she wanted to do. She said she wanted to go into health, but she realized that she didn't want to spend the following 40 years of her life doing something that she didn't enjoy. The only reason why she even considered that was because her parents pushed her toward that career.

I'm not saying your in the same situation as my friend, but losing all hope because of a class is idiotic, if you really want to go into health and it's something you really love doing, you shouldn't let something like that get you down or discourage you.

Ask yourself this. What career choice do you want to go into? Knowing that you will not fail and was guarantee that you'll be successful in it.

That's the career you should look into.

I say if you're really passionate about health care then I wouldn't give up just yet. Pick yourself up and try again. Take a moment and figure out what you are doing wrong. Studying harder isn't necessary the answer. You need to study more efficiently. Also, you shouldn’t worry so much about not having career goals. You’re still young. I believe everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses. Maybe, health care isn’t for you. Well, there’s still a million other things you could do.

There is never a must or a need to do something.
Everything has a option and even if it doesn't go as you planned, there's other paths you could take to reach the same destination.

Maybe you're just not ready for the path you want to take.
You can still pursue what you want to do at 25 or higher so no need to rush.
Instead of being stubborn about an option, figure out other things you may enjoy doing in the future.

Take time and see if you are up to what you want to do.
Its good to have a dream but don't be upset if it doesn't work out.
At least you do have a goal and you'll eventually get there someway.

It's your life.

Are you willing to kill yourself because your parents don't approve? You're getting older, and it's time to make your own decisions.
Remember, school isn't everything. Once you open your eyes and see the world beyond your gates...it's beautiful. smile.gif
Start thinking for yourself and acting for yourself. I used to be in your situation, but I took grip of my situation and bettered it all.

Best of luck to you.

Do you want to go to university? Or is it just for your parents?

You first need to decide whether you are studying that stuff for your parents or because you enjoy it. Are you going to school to please your parents or because you want to accomplish something yourself? If you are only doing it for your parents, then probably where you are heading isn't the right direction for you and you should rethink your future.

you're being soooooooo overdramatic. kill yourself cause you got a 75? are you serious? grade 11 is so meaningless. it COULD be worse.
plus, u probably just blanked out on the final, it's natural but you'll do better next time.

my average all throughout high school was always 75 or below and actually dipped down to the 60s in grade 11 but i managed to pull a mid 80 average in grade 12 and got accepted to all the universities of my choice. i know, it isn't amazing but it is decent.

ps. i finished gr11 physics with a 60 and gr12 physics with an 88 (which is waaaay harder then gr11), so ya, it is possible.

not everyone in this world is born as a genius..
we have to work hard in order to achieve something..
but, you must bare in mind that sometimes what you aim for,it won't turn out to be what you expect it to be..

doing badly in your exams is not as if it's the end of the world right?
what's the use of committing suicide?
do you think it's easy for your mum to hold you inside her tummy for 9 months and going through delivery pains?
and you want to end your live just because you did badly in exams and not getting into the course you want?
be optimistic and think on the bright side..

as for myself, i really want to be in a science course but my grades didn't allow it..
so i can only choose the course that qualify my grades which is an IT(information technology) course, i hate IT due to personal experience..
but somehow, after doing that course for a few months, i learn to like it and did very well for my end of year exams which made me the top 10% students..
that's how life goes on for me..

be responsible for yourself and take the right steps..
do make a wise decision! Good luck..

I study hard but get low grades at times too. I would feel sad, pissed and horrible but at the end of the day, I just think to myself, that I did my part and it's just not meant to be.

There must be something other than health care that you would want to try or something that you are good at but haven't really put much attention to, like an undiscovered potential in you or stuff like that.. You're still young, you just have to find it. And believe me, there's still time! Don't stress too much! happy.gif

i had the same problem when i was in gr.11.. i wanted to go into dentistry, then make-up school, then wanted to go into business...

finally i decided to go into business cuz i wanted to do advertising.

well.. after taking 2 years of business courses.. i took a few communications courses and finally found what i would be happy doing for the rest of my life. WELL.. just because u specialize in sth at school.. doesn't mean that's wat your career is gonna be in the future.

i had friends who graduated from molecular chemistry... and she's working management in retail.

point being: you never really know what you want to do until you get there.

just go with the flow.. don't stress urself too much. do what your good at and passionate about. don't do sth cuz someone else wants you to do it. you'll never be happy living like that.

I am in grade 11, grade 12 is where universities look at your marks.

I am offended by this. And I'm sure people who attend college would be to. Do you know why? You've set high standards for yourself to which you were unable to meet and now you're contemplating a suicide for a... B. In a grade 11 class. I got friends who would die and go to heaven if they could get a B in chemistry. Here's a thought, if you're not performing "up to your standards" in chemistry, try another field. Drop the class... retake it to upgrade the mark if it's a mark a university will look at.

FYI, you can still get into university with high 70s and low 80s. You know why? Because I was a slacker student in highschool. And I got into university, accepted to three different choices I applied for. And I chose Ryerson as my final choice. Not the best but still quality post-secondary education at Ryerson. You may not get into the university of your choice, but you can still transfer later on that school if your university grades are good enough.

I have a friend who NEVER got a single 90 on his report card in highschool. He's got into UofT's notorious Life Sciences with the same mark range you have which is pretty close to health care, so please... pull yourself together.

Here's some enlightenment.

I got 23 in grade 11 math, and my overall average was around the mid 60's. A sub-par C average, great. I thought it was the end of the world. I thought I had to stay back another semester after grade 12 to make up for missing credits.

And then I stepped it up in grade 12. I got all my credits without taking an extra semester. I looked to alternatives to improve my academic standing and resorted to night school to grab that extra credit. I take it you're in a semestered school... you have a year and a half to move along.

i understand how eager you want to have those high scores, one reason is for your parents to be proud.
but trust me, like what everybody had already said in here, you are still young, and even if it feels like
time's running out, or that you just HAVE to make a decision about things, take it slow. because if you
hurry yourself too much, you might make the wrong decisions in the end *writer gets hit by a rock*.
i hope you get to fix things & possibly get into the university you'd want. don't committ suicide.
it should be the last thing you think about doing. you shouldn't even be thinking about it.

a 75 isnt that bad.. if it makes you feel any better i got a a 30% on my bio final...lol. but it balances out with other work ive done so far. dont let it get to you, your life is not worth abandoning just because of a stupid final that you probably did better than alot of people. maybe im just too accepting of C's myself but its not that bad at all~ and there are other opportunities to prove yourself than High school.

As for studying, maybe you're not studying properly? Sure, people say they can study for hours and hours but does it really mean anything if it's not studying effectively? You should study in a way that is proper and works well for you for whatever subject it may be.

You should never even consider suicide as an option for anything. Instead of trying to run away from your problem, you should face it. Life's precious and every moment should be taken advantage of.

About your idea that not knowing what career = no goal, that's just silly. Not everyone will know what they want to do as a career even in college and it's not necessarily a bad thing. You have plenty of time to think about what you want to do, time to explore ideas and such before deciding on what to do.

For now, you should just try to figure out effective studying methods and maybe seek out help from others? You shouldn't be handling this alone because you can always ask friends, teachers, or family for help :] Don't think too far ahead and take things one at a time. You'll figure out what you want to do in due time. Good luck~~

LOVE & RESPECT.
