OMG, I never thought they would do it live in a million years, especially not now when they must all be dead tired.

Zhang Han, for someone whose probably never thought about music in his life sounds really good, and poor Wei Chen. He sounded so tired when he had to do the ad libs at the end. He has to carry the song, and he's probably the most tired of all four guys from the promotions.

Did he really? It's not a singing competition at all. In fact, a mute and deaf cutie by the name of Song Xiaobo got second place that year. Instead it's more of an all-around competition, based on personality first and foremost I think, and then talent and looks. Mostly, it's an easy way to get noticed and signed by a company.

However, since it's hard to show off "acting" talent, especially early on in the competition, most of the ones who have that talent don't make it and instead the ones with decent voices get farther. Or the ones who are inspirational somehow get further. For example, in 06, there was Song Xiaobo who touched a lot of people, and Xiang Ding, who was frail and really looked like a girl, and entered in the competition because he wanted to show others that he was manly.

Guo Jiaming, who is supposedly n amazing actor (the youngest nominated at the International Emmy's and is Chengtian's current favorite young actor judging by all the upcoming productions he's in) competed in that too, in the same year.He's also from Central Academy of Drama. I wonder if they knew each other.

A lot of acting talent must have got overlooked

Oh well, it hopefully shows that as long as you have the talent, you'll succeed and get known in some way or other.

I don't really remember the details. In the early rounds I guess they have clips of them saying stuff about themselves...they also have fans call in, and talk to their favorite contestant from a group.

But it's so hard to give enough time to everyone to get a good guage of their personality, that I think that at first, it's more or less based on performing a talent (which is usually singing, because again, it's easy to show off). But to really show anything off on TV you have to get to the top 6 of each region which is determined by judges in that region, and perhaps Zhang Han didn't make it. Actually, I'm sure he didn't make it because there would be pictures of him wearing the "uniform" which was black and there aren't. It's a crap shoot really getting in the top 6.

After the top 10 is picked by text message voting, they move into a "castle" where they live together. And then only after the top 10 is picked do they actually get to show if they have acting talent or not, and they act out various scenes from famous movies/series, and get judged for it by a panel of directors, actors, producers etc.

Usually though, most of the top 10 is better at singing than anything else. Although the winner of '06, Pu Bajia is a serious actor now, and only released an EP for his fans. But he was also good at singing, dancing, and he stood out because he was Tibetan, like actually Tibetan with that dialect influence showing up in his Mandarin, unlike the Sichuan/Yunnan Tibetans like Alan or Zha Xi Dun Zhu who speak standard mandarin, so it was kind of a question of what he wanted to do, and he chose acting.


Looking back, I feel like a lot of the top 10 people from 06' had hardships and I guess that's why I say it's based on personality.

Song Xiaobo was deaf and mute. Wu Diwen was poor and had to help his mother sell stuff as a child. Xiang Ding got made fun of because he was girly-looking. Ma Tianyu was poor and left home without money and was trying to get into Beijing Film Academy. Another guy had no interest in becoming famous; he was a soldier.

when i first heard that part, i was like 'heck nah! which one of them sang this part!'
cause im soooo in love with it, even if it's a few lines. it's sooooo beautiful!

yah, im slow, i just finished the drama today.
the ending had me . because i would have never guess that it'll end the way it started.
and i assume that YunHai has to start all over with YunXun, or have her tell him how mean he was. lol.

this is my first time ever hearing of all of them, but after reading on bits here and there,
and reading that Wei Chen is a singer, i just thought that he was another star thrown into the mix.
BUT HE REALLY IMPRESSED ME. he CAN SING! like, SING!
i'll say it again, HE'S NOT JUST ANOTHER PRETTY FACE.
after hearing him sing, i have so much respect and admiration for him.

Though I'm impressed that Zhang Han sounds a lot better than I thought he would, but also frightened by the aspect that he (or eeMedia) might use that to produce albums...oh eeMedia, please don't settle for mediocrity

Being fairly pessimistic...I think in the earlier rounds, it's based on looks unless you're really talented...the top 10 of the Dragon Angels are currently fairly untalented but all are really pretty except for one Beijing girl who's already famous on the internet for singing.
