what are your thoughts on pirating music?

i am currently gathering information from here and there for a persuasive essay in my english class.
i read that most teenagers are more worried about downloading viruses with their music than being caught stealing the music.

my opinion.
~every year, the music industry loses about a billion dollars in profit due to piracy.
sure, celebrities may be making big bucks, and taking just ONE song wouldn't be that big of a deal-but it's still taking something that is not rightfully yours.

but i'll admit, i'm no angel myself. i was once an avid user of limewire in my middle school days.
i believe that it should be avoided and curbed to an extent or degree by one's self, but somewhat forgivable in a sense.

corporate companies are trying to use more methods to protect their CDs and music, but millions of songs are still being illegally ripped and downloaded today. the only logical way to help subdue the increasing problem is by not partaking in the act yourself, and by encouraging those around you to follow your example as well.

how old are you?
is it acceptable, absolutely unforgivable, somewhat agreeable, etc?
do you do/have done it?
if so, at what age did you do it?
from which places do you download the music/movies?

20 years old
I'm no angel myself, but I rarely do it though. I hate the fact that the RIAA is suing users for illegally downloading music. They fine you ridiculous amounts for each song (in the thousands) even though the song only cost 99 cents. This really piss me off and hence the reason I stopped buying and listening to American songs/cds/dvds altogether. For the past 3-4 years I went from american songs to asian songs (mostly kpop).I do buy a cd here or there but it's never American (usually kpop or rarely jpop) I used to download a lot back in my high school days but now I rarely ever do it and if I do I usually use g2p or just google the songs since I feel it's safer than using p2p programs. I understand why people download songs since most people have songs in the thousands and suppose each songs cost 99 cents that would equal thousands of dollars.

Some artist have embrace that pirating music is okay and instead they adapt to the changing culture. They believe that the people who will illegally download will download and the people who buy songs/albums will buy. I remember (forgot which artist let's call it "xxx artist" for now...) xxx artist releasing an album for free and asking for donations only if the downloader wanted to give and they raised millions of dollars for themselves by doing this. The xxx artist were trying to prove to the riaa that instead of suing its customers they can embrace to the changing culture and try to make money off of that instead and they got their point across by raising a great deal of money.....(hope this all makes sense too lazy to check for clarity/grammar/spelling error,etc....

I download all of my music. The record companies have been screwing us out of our money with high price cd's and crappy music for too long, so im gonna continue stealing music unless its for a band that could actually use the money, like a krock band and not someone like boa.
Thanks to the mods closing my thread, "Ask a gay" is now taking PM questions. feel free to ask me any questions about life, love, and the everyday routine of an openly gay individual living in todays society.

but itunes is going drm free now

anyways.. some of you got some horrible reasons. justifying downloading music because a handful of peopel in the industry are rich [which consist of the minority of people in the industry] or because they're ripping you off for albums despite that you can buy per song [and no longer per album]?

if i'm gonna do it, i'll admit i'm doing it because i don't want to pay for it, and i can take it without paying for it. i'm not gonna justify it and say i'm right for doing so because in the end, i'm not part of some movement to right the wrong in the music industry. i just wanna listen to my music.

Hm shouldn't this be on the music thread or something? ohmy.gif

Eheh, I'm not proud of my pirating...

But if JRock and Kpop cd's became more accessible, then I will maybe change my ways?

i try to limit the number of albums i download and try to buy CDs that i think are worth buying

if so, at what age did you do it?
14

from which places do you download the music/movies?
in the beginning i used Limewire cuz i only wanted specific songs, but nowadays off torrent sites to download whole albums

I can't find any songs I like on CD, they're all by those anonymous techno artists, and it's usually 1 song that I like. The only singer that I buy albums for is Ayumi.

do you do/have done it?
Currently still doing it

if so, at what age did you do it?
Pirated since I was like...12?

from which places do you download the music/movies?
I do movies, music, games, programs. Most likely torrent sites as Limewire is often unreliable.

On a side note, if you download a virus off LW, you epic fail at life.
