Stony Brook is a lot cheaper than the other schools you listed since it's public, but sometimes the privates like Columbia, NYU, & Cornell give you full scholarships based on both grade/income because of their endowments and whatever (read this article. My best advice is to go directly to the schools financial aid office. A lot of times the schools have scholarships based on both financial status and grades. So if you're an A student and your families' income is below, say 40K a year, then chances are you'll get a full scholarship from a certain school. That's the case with someone I know who went to NYU. Then again, there was also another girl who was also an A student but still had to pay close to full tuition for NYU because her families' income was over 100K.

schools use the info that you submit on the FAFSA to create your financial aid package.

after you get accepted to the school they will send you your tentative finaid package. this will include scholarships, need-based grants, loans, and workstudy. it will have both school and federal aid listed. if you think the amount is too low, you can appeal and try and get more from them.

of course.

if you make sure you don't mess up on one administrative thing in college, it would definitely be finaid documents. if they want you to submit something do it promptly.
