Today after art class my friend was talking to me about a bullying problem she had...
It's kinda strange- but here's how it goes.
This popular girl named Jill and her friends go up to my friend, who's kinda a loner and say "Hi, (my friend's name)!" Really loud, and she says "Hey, Jill," back to her.
Then Jill would like giggle and snicker to her friends in front of my friend as if she had said something embarrassing instead of "Hey".
Doesn't seem offensive at first but it happens a lot, maybe 3 times within one class period, and my friend says she doesn't know what it is but she feels uncomfortable and offended.
And then one time Jill and one of her friends asked my friend to explain a math problem, and my friend, being really compliant and peaceful, tried to help her but the whole time Jill was trying to argue saying "no, I tried that already," or "that won't work" and she was snickering to her friend the whole time. Then Jill asked my friend for her phone number and my friend /gave it/. D8 But luckily her phone isn't working so even if Jill called it probably wouldn't go through...
What I told my friend was that she should stop saying hi whenever Jill calls her, and just ignore her since she never really means it anyway...
but then my friend's scared that Jill would report to her popular friends and start calling my friend a snob for not responding.
Haha, but imo, i wouldn't care as long as the bully knows who's boss. If I was in Jill and my friend's math class I'd trip her or worse xDDD
I feel like my friend's being controlled by this bully because she's so peaceful and compliant about everything...
Sorry that was really long, but please, help us deal with this bully problem! TT_TT

Maybe your friend is perceiving their advances as something that they aren't. It doesn't sound like bullying, more just like stupid girls trying to get the loner to talk.
I'm not really sure what your friend should do, but if she really feels uncomfortable, she should maybe ask to be moved to another side of the room.

People say a lot of things they don't really mean anything, but say it anyways out of politeness.
Are you telling her to be a b***h? lol

So basically you're saying you'd get beef with someone when you have no army behind you. She's taking it the smoothest way out.

Yeah, this kind of bullying is really strange. Jill's been bullying my friend ever since she was the "new kid" in seventh grade; they just happened to go to the same middle school.
But I think that saying hi repeatedly even if she saw my friend like 30 minutes ago is mocking. Or something like that, I don't really understand what Jill's trying to do...
And they have like 4 classes together, so i don't know if my friend will ever be far away from Jill.

I'm not telling her to go pick fights with large groups, just that she needs to stand up for herself, or else the bullying will continue. What would really help is if someone would suggest to me something she could say or do that tells the bully that my friend is not the person to mess with.

It could be worse, that's all I can say.
I'm in grade 9, I know what you mean, but instead of getting the random 'hi' I get the 'HEY kool-aidGOT!'.
And I don't take it like your friend (I'm argumentative), but peaceful, somewhat pushover (I don't mean this offensively) people like your friend balance everything out, if you were her, you and 'Jill' would probably be at war already, but Jill might not mean anything. She could be one of those really outgoing hyper practically-never-makes-sense high school chicks... like me! I do the whole saying hi thing too, and I say it REALLY loud but I don't do the snickering.

Hmm I wnet through the exact bullying when I went to high school too..Kinda creepy and ironic cuz what your friend is going through is like the mirror image of what I went through.
For me I dealt it with pure sarcasm....My bully's name was Meghan and she would come up to me and loudly say hi to me like "HI ANGELA!!!" <then she would giggle backhandedly to her lackey> So I would sarcastically say back to her "Hey Meghan...I see you just got the vocal bullhorn surgery. So now not only will I hear you but the rest of the cats and dogs can here you a mile away."
And I bet Jill is the type of airhead that would only pull bully tactics of peer pressure and gang ups? Then if I was your friend I would get a band of other sarcastic friends and make fun her back. A airhead bully can never stand up against a dry, quick-witted group.
Liek the saying goes for Teddy roosevelt "Speak softly but carry a big stick"... Except since you can't carry weapons to school I suggest sarcasm cuz it works wonders lol...
