I've noticed that food allergies are really common these days and some of them can be quite fatal, whether it's peanuts, eggs, sesame products, gluten and some people are allergic to preservatives.

I have been recently told that I have celiac disease which causes me to have a very low tolerance of gluten (it's a wheat thing), and I'm starting to realise how frustrating a food allergy can be, especially when eating out.

So much stuff has gluten in it! Bread, pasta, cakes, crackers, biscuits, soy sauce and many things that have been processed. I have to scan food packets religiously for anything that might have gluten, and it's really embarrassing that when I go to any asian restaurant, I have to give them a gluten-free soy sauce for them to cook with. unsure.gif Most places are pretty understanding, but sometimes I feel they think I'm being fussy and I'm just doing things like this to annoy them. unsure.gif For this reason I just cook for myself and make my own gluten free cakes etc.

I was wondering who else on soompi might have a food allergy too? How do you go about it? Especially with eating out (if you eat out).

I'm lactose intolerant... sux balls.

No ice cream, pizza, anything cheese/milk related for me. Whenever I eat out, I ask them to take out the cheese if possible. If they can't then, I just order something else. It's really tough sometimes.

PS No chocolate for me either T_T, haven't tasted chocolate in over 10 years, lol. When I was a kid whenever halloween/valentines/xmas come around, I remember splitting my candies between chocolates and non chocolates. Usually there was more chocolate than just sugar candy... how sad, lol. I give the chocolates away.

I have a friend who's has severe allergies to gluten and it really sucks for her. I totally feel for you.

I have a lot of fruit allergies and most of the time it's related to tropical fruits like mango, lychee, logan, durian, soursop, papaya, coconut etc. The more common fruits that I'm allergic to are bananas, avocado, persimmon, cantaloupe, and honey dew. I can eat all of them if they're cooked (not that I'd like eat it that way). It seems like the cooking breaks down the proteins that I'm allergic to. I also have this random allergy to walnuts.

If I'm allergic to something I'll just avoid eating it and if I'm really desperate I'll buy candy, cookies, and ice cream with artificial fruit flavors.

I am lactose intolerant as well but I have noticed that I can drink raw milk and eat cheese made with raw milk without problems. It's only when I drink pasteurized milk or eat pasteurized cheese that I get sick.

When they pasteurize the milk they destroy a lot of the natural enzymes that make it easy to digest.

I'm allergic to mangos... they're so good though.. I can still remember what it tastes like. I avoid anything and everything with mango in it. I kinda feel like giving up though cause the reason I stopped eating it was cause I got a rash on my face. Maybe I was mistaken and i've been avoiding it for all these years ...

hm... is there any way to find out if you're allergic to something without actually eating it and getting a reaction to it?

Don't they have tests where they kind of apply an array of stuff to your skin and see what reacts?
=X maybe you should put a drip of mango on your arm and see if it does anything

I have slight allergic reactions to different fruits.
It use to be watermelon, but I think it's gone away. I'm too scared to truly check though.
My throat will get really itchy and my whole mouth, basically where the juice would touch. It'd get red and swollen too. >_<

I haven't really had it happen to me lately.
I think too much of cucumber/watermelon/mango or something would probably do it. Lychee too, I think.

So I avoided all of that for the longest time, but it's so good I can't help but to eat it anyway sometimes!

My teacher at church once got a test for allergies and she said they put like twenty things on you to see which one you're allergic to or something. She's allergic to dust mites o_o

But I have a lot of fruit allergies too sad.gif I can't eat pears, mangos, peaches, bananas, any kinds of melons, kiwis, etc... My throat becomes extremely irritated and itchy. It sucks so much.

Same, my mouth would itch like crazy and the inside of my ears too. An acquaintance of mine told me that it's a possible that we (us who are allergic to those fruits above) are allergic to latex.

I'm allergic to crab. I develop this rash whenever I eat a certain amount. It makes my skin all rough-feeling and itchy. I eat it anyway though. tongue.gif

I'm allergic to something, I just don't know what it is. o_o
I've gotten hives not that long ago but I don't know what I ate to get it.
It was rather random. And I've never gotten hives before that so I don't know what I'm allergic to.
When I was younger I was allergic to shrimp. I would get a rash and get all red.
But that kind of just went away. I dunno how that happened. ;D
