Zidane works in a sporting goods store selling skates. A pair of hockey skates costs $58.00, and a pair of figure skates costs $56.00. One shift, Zidane sold 32 pairs of skates. His receipts totaled $1828, not including taxes.
a. How many pairs of hockey skates did Zidane sell?
b. How many pairs of figure skates did Zidane sell?
1828 = 58( x ) + 56( y )
32 = x + y
X = hockey skates
y = Figure skates

isolate x ~
so 32= x+ y becomes x= 32-y
plug that into the 1828=58x + 56y equation to get 1828= 58(32-y) + 56y
rest should be algebra
once you get y, plug that value back in the 32=x+y equation to get x.

You can either use the substitution method (what the poster above me told you to do) or the elimination method. Personally I find the elimination method quicker o_o.
1828 = 58x + 56y
-56 (32 = x + y)
1828 = 58x + 56y
-1792 = -56x -56y
_______________
36 = 2x
x= 18
plug x back into one of the original equations.
(I pick the bottom one cuhs its smaller)
32 = 18 +y
y = 14
There you go (:
1828 = 58x + 56y
-56 (32 = x + y)
1828 = 58x + 56y
-1792 = -56x -56y
_______________
36 = 2x
x= 18
plug x back into one of the original equations.

y = 14
