Actor Hiroshi Abe has been chosen to star in a new Fuji TV drama series titled "Shiroi Haru" ("White Spring"). This is his first lead role in a drama since "Kekkon Dekinai Otoko" in 2006.

Abe's daughter will be played by 9-year-old actress Nozomi Ohashi. She recently got her break as a voice actress in Hayao Miyazaki's "Gake no Ue no Ponyo," for which she also sang the theme song with folk duo Fujioka Fujimaki. "Shiroi Haru" will be her first regular role in a TV series.

Synopsis
Sakura Haruo is released from prison after serving out his sentence. Haruo, who was charged for murder and had taken leave of his girlfriend Mariko with insensitive words, has abandoned himself to despair. He loiters in the streets like a hooligan just as he had always done in the past and is harassed by a young freeter (part-time workers) couple, Nishida Shiori and Kojima Yuki, who are in an internet cafe. However, Shiori takes an interest in Haruo. Then one day, Haruo meets Sachi, an innocent young girl with the heart of an angel. He initially thinks that she is an “annoying kid” but when he is exposed to her pure smile, his mind changes …

Character Description
Abe Hiroshi as Sakura Haruo
A man who was charged for murder and has just been released from prison after serving out his sentence. He used to be a yakuza although one might say that he is a hooligan of the lowest level and only a chess piece to the organisation. With the support of the frail Takamura Mariko, whom he was cohabiting with, Haruo thought he could try to live a normal life. However, when he asked his organisation about it, he was punished, made to leave and committed murder. Thinking that there was no way that a murderer like himself could give Mariko happiness, he deliberately said things that he didn’t mean to hurt her and initiates a one-sided breakup. He abandoned himself to despair for losing his beloved Mariko. Things remain unchanged after prison. Then he meets a young girl called Takamura Sachi. Haruo says she is an “annoying kid” but that is a feeling of embarrassment.

Ohashi Nozomi as Murakami Sachi
A girl who is pure-hearted like an angel. On the other hand, she has, in her own way, the disposition of present-day children, and is not afraid of adults. With that pure heart, she is also spot on about the hidden things in the hearts of adults. Haruo appears to be rather daunting to adults but she is completely oblivious to it in her interactions with him and gradually grows to display affection for him.

Y o s h i t a k a Yuriko as Nishida Shiori
A person who grows to understand Haruo well. She is part-time worker living life aimlessly. She gets to know Haruo, who has just been released from prison, when living at an internet cafe and takes an interest in him because she feels that he has things in common. Haruo treats her unkindly but doesn’t reject her and that is comforting to her. She has reservations about a way of life that hides real intentions, is bound by stated principles and clings at small happiness. She seems to be aiming for some big business opportunity in the sense of triumphing over these adults.

Endo Yuya as Kojima Yuki
A part-time worker who is always out of money. He is willing to do some bad things because he wants to be rich. He likes Shiori and behaves like he is her boyfriend but Shiori only finds him convenient to have around.

Konno Mahiru as Takamura Mariko
The former lover that Haruo had parted with. She has a weak constitution and is already dead from illness when Haruo is released from prison.

Shiraishi Miho as Takamura Kanako
Mariko’s younger sister. She gets to know Murakami Yasushi through her sister. She cannot bear to see Yasushi struggle with the child upon Mariko death and ends up helping him. She now takes care of Sachi while helping out in his shop. However, she doesn’t think well of her sister.

Endo Kenichi as Murakami Yasushi
An average man who is honest and good-natured. He has the personality of the lower middle class who won’t do drastic things because because of his cowardice and cautiousness. He runs a bread shop with Kanako. He got to know Mariko after Haruo was imprisoned and took a fancy to her. However, he knew that she was pregnant with the child of another man but she didn’t talk about the identity of the father of her child. Yasushi accepted her and the child that was on the way, and hoped to live together with them. Mariko hesitated to do so and their relationship remained platonic. She eventually gave birth to her child and died of illness. Yasushi took in the child named Sachi, and raised her as as his own daughter. Because he possesses common sense and decency, he is bewildered when faced with Haruo who doesn’t conform to that standard. Similarly, Haruo is put off kilter by Yasushi’s common sense and logic in seeing things.

Sounds interesting. hopefully there will be a better synopsis out before the drama airs. I'd really like to know what Hiroshi Abe's character did to end up in jail for ten years. With that said I actually miss seeing Hiroshi Abe on the small screen, so I'm looking forward to his return.

I'm actually waiting for Tenchijin to be released with subs. Jidaigeki + Abe (+Satoshi + Tokiwa + Tamayama + Oguri) = wub.gif I loved him in At Home Dad (which was in the same timeslot, network and season as Shiroi Haru) too, of course Kekkon Dekinai Otoko, Trick, Hero, Yasha (although minor role).

Will keep my eye out for further updates on this drama. biggrin.gif

^ Thanks for the caps! I'm still waiting for this episode to finish downloading.. but then, i don't think I can enjoy it raw. Usually from his (and the writer's) previous dramas, the humor is in the lines.

I want to watch this drama mainly for Yosh!taka Yuriko. She's a talented actress, so it'll be interesting to see her next to Abe Hiroshi. smile.gif

After watching the first episode I think that the little girl (nozomi-chan's so cute) is haruo's daughter. And I think that Mariko didn't use the money. So where is the money ? XD

In this drama, the acting is sooo good.

episode 1 soft-subs is now available at d-addicts. http://d-addicts.com/forum/viewtopic_73746.htm

episode 2 hardsub mp4/hd version was just uploaded by TimeLesSub. http://d-addicts.com/forum/viewtopic_73745.htm How awesome is that? Thanks TimeLesSub!!!!

-- the show is slow, it reminds me of Arifureta Kiseki pace.. Despite the pace, both dramas captured my attention and curiousity. Definitely a must watch though I don't feel like raising my expectations for this drama.

Yuriko is the suicidal girl from Love Shuffle? Oh dear, I almost didn't recognize her with her hair and makeup. This girl is really pretty, personally, I think she's prettier without makeup on. On acting.. errrmmm...... awkwardness? I can let that slide since it's typical for jdramas to have that. Also maybe because I loved her as Kairi in Love Shuffle. But that required very little lines and her character is supposed to have very limited expressions and emotions.. I did enjoy her crying scenes.

Endo Yuya didn't impress me much in Voice, but his performance seems to be better.

I can't seem to shake off Abe's Kekkon Dekinai Otoko odd-ness... but the drama just started... and he's doing well imo.

And the little girl is sooooo adorable! I'd hate to see her cry when she finds out the truth.. though I think her character is very strong-willed..

From Yomiuri Daily's Televiews by WM Penn.

Hiroshi Abe is giving one of the best performances of his career in Shiroi Haru (Tuesdays, 10 p.m., Fuji). He's very convincing as Haruo, a petty gangster who promised his ailing girlfriend Mariko he would quit the business but discovers the only way out is to get in deeper. The boss promises he can quit and have the money needed for Mariko's medical treatment if he murders a man for him first. As he scuffles with his victim, he shoots himself in the leg.

Released from prison nine years later, he's a pitiful, bitter, limping, snarling hulk of a man with frightening eyes that mirror his pain. Beneath it all, a kernel of humanity remains, but only Sachi (Nozomi Ohashi of Gake no Ue no Ponyo fame) can see it. When he accidentally meets the little girl, who loves to draw in the park, she draws him with angel wings.

Beyond Abe's stunning performance, the drama provides some interesting observations on modern Japan through Haruo's eyes. After a nine-year hiatus from society, he is bewildered by the unemployment, Net cafe accommodations and computer search engines, although that is how he tracks down bakery owner Murakami, the man Mariko married before she died. He is raising Sachi with the help of Mariko's sister. Gradually, Haruo comes to suspect Sachi is his daughter and viewers are invited along to see if she can bring hope to his life.

He is raising Sachi with the help of Mariko's sister. Gradually, Haruo comes to suspect Sachi is his daughter and viewers are invited along to see if she can bring hope to his life.

Drama is so slow though. Still, I'm starting to love Abe's performance more and more. His eyes scare me at times, I don't understand how the girl can be so carefree and approach him so easily. I can't say enough how adorable Sachi is, truly a pure and innocent little girl. Seeing her dimples pop up makes me squeal! laugh.gif

I hope they'll limit the flashbacks already featured in ep 1. It's unnecessary to repeat those for the third time.

Just noticed the official synopsis and character description not mentioning about Sachi being Haruo's daughter. However the earliest press release did say about htem being father-child... But from Murukami's reactions to the sister-in-law's remarks about him having the same blood as Sachi definitely reassures me that she's Haruo's daughter.
