I often feel the need to ask this question here on Soompi.

I quite like soompi, and I know that there's a number of young people here. But one thing I don't understand is the complete satisfaction with ignorance.

Of course there are many things that I don't know, and asking another person is a good way to learn.
But, I have to wonder if some people have never questioned anything they've heard, or what?
Ever since I was a little kid, I would never completely believe something that someone told me, and well...let me give some examples of ignorance I see...

1. "The native language of Asian-Americans is an Asian language...regardless of how many generations their family has been in the US".
There have been so many topics started by people who cry about not being able to speak their "native language", then say that their parents only spoke to them in English...meaning that their native language is English.

Is this concept somehow difficult to grasp? Am I missing something? Or are people willfully this ignorant?

2. "Asian food is better because it's better than American food, because...uhh...American food is only McDonald's and...uhh...yeah".
Whenever a topic like this comes up, I sigh. Because it will soon be filled with people comparing the best types of Asian food to the worst types of American food.

3. "I know that this action is bad for my body, but is it ok???"
If you know that something like only eating 300 calories a day is bad, why are you making a post asking if it's ok?
Has a large portion of soompi been sleeping through their health education classes??

4. "An apple (or other fruit) has a lot of calories, so it's bad for you"
It seems that for some reason, the only thing that enters some soompiers ears is "calories are bad". But without calories, how are we supposed to live? And if fruits are bad for you, then how are we supposed to be healthy?
That people are seriously saying things like that says to me that they have no interest in health or education.

5. etc.

So, I'm wondering how it is that so many people who I assume get good grades, are so ignorant when it comes to common sense.
I am constantly amazed at some of the things that people here post in regards to common sense questions and answers.

Please, educate me.

And, no, again, age is not the problem.
At 5 years old, if someone told me that "all Koreans have good skin", I would be skeptical. If at 8 years old, someone told me that bananas have a lot of calories, so I shouldn't eat them, I would be skeptical.

Please educate me on your willful ignorance.
If you are willfully ignorant, please explain to me how you came to the conclusion that this was a good way to live your life.

I am honestly interested in your thoughts.

Sometimes a little ignorance is necessary...
And sometimes people are just stupid. 50% of people
are below average intelligence, and while these people can function,
and do well in school, when it comes to everyday situations that can't be memorized....
they FAIL.
honestly... you're not half as special as you think you are.

sure, there's a lot of things that most people don't know.

Perhaps those subjects were casual and passing-of-thought. Like they were bored one day and wanted to start a conversation without really thinking about the stupidity of the question.

And lol, common sense is a dying skill these days.

our high school teacher has told us before that "common sense isn't always common" =____= i know a lot of people who are book-smart but it ends there. i agree with the examples you posted. it's really annoying to see the same senseless topics posted every.single.day.

^ that's true. My friends are super book-smart...but common sense...not so much.

I think I'm hypocritical that I'm posting here but yeah. =x
The love/relationship thread annoys me a lot though.
I've only posted one topic there ever and on a few topics, usually family related, I admit.
But most of them are just -facepalm-.

willfully ignorant people annoy's me. They choose not to make sense, and keep asking me question, when they said "We don't want to make sense" .. like, Duh.... don't reply to me then. because i choose to make sense. i dont believe things for no reason. but if there is stereotype, i just be aware of it, i know it's not true for all case. because i judge ppl individually, not as a group.

things like, eat more spring onion, it makes u smart. Eat more chilli it makes u smart. Eat fish, if give u nice skin.
I believe these for some reason.

Being smart + using common sense is two different things. Most of my friends, have both. Some can be scatty though smile.gif
Open your eyes O_O ..

Honestly, I know many people who are smart in school and everything, but when it comes to common sense, they're just o_o. I think I find it kind of annoying.

QUOTE (Mattsanity @ Mar 2 2009, 09:55 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
OP is ignorant for not realizing everyones not perfect

in case you didn't read, i didn't say anything about people being perfect.
i also acknowledged that there are many things that people don't know, and some ignorance is normal smile.gif
