well, it depends. what kind of vegetarian do you want to be?

Lacto-vegetarianism includes dairy products but excludes eggs
Ovo-vegetarianism includes eggs but not dairy
Lacto-ovo vegetarianism includes both eggs and dairy products.
Semi-vegetarianism consists of a diet largely of vegetarian foods, but may include fish and sometimes even poultry, as well as dairy products and eggs.
Veganism is all together not eating any dairy, eggs, fish, or meat.

As for me, I'm vegan for health reasons. I guess the only thing bad about it is that you can't eat a lot of the foods you used to enjoy. But then you'd get used to it. Yes, people will make fun of you and eat chicken wings in front of you and invite you to BBQ gatherings. >> Still, been at it for 2 months and I feel good~ :D

religion is a factor. i'm buddhist and it's much preferred if you don't eat meat (: but i assume other people do it simply because they don't think eating meat is humane. i've tried, but there are just those few dishes that hold me back.. pho, fried chicken, bbq pork buns.. mmm. good luck!

i'm not a veggietarian..
i tried cutting out meat (not meat by-products) for a week and failed miserably..
i love meat too much.

i do know a couple of vegans and going out to eat sucks because they'll either say no to that place or they'll just sit and watch you eat..
like working out, i think it's best if you had a buddy that'll be a veggietarian with you.

I personally am not (though I do have my vegetarian/health binges from time to time), but I have a few friends who are vegetarians. It's not too hard for them to eat out because... they don't really eat out (unless ordering something vegetarian at restaurants), but I respect their decision.

Add me if you wish. :] Just mention that you're a Soompier!

I think the biggest issue is for ethical issues. Like, why should animals be used for our consumption. Or they might be against the current way livestock are being treated (small living spaces for animals, they are being fed animal by-products instead of grains/grass, genetically modified).

Some do it for health issues or lose weight but if I don't know how well they are doing because as long as you don't know HOW to eat, being a vegetarian is not going to help. An omnivore that knows how to eat a balance meal is healthier than a vegetarian who doesn't...that's why a lot of them eat supplements.

And then there's for religious reasons~

If you want to then go for it, I personally think meat is pleasure (food, in general, is pleasure) but if it's your life! Just don't get all preachy about it and join PETA (they are psycho terrorists!).

If you stop eating all animal products (eggs. milk etc) then you're a vegan.

A semi-vegetarian is really not a vegetarian...it's a picky eater...

I was right about to make a thread about this until I saw this, ahaha.

I'm thinking about becoming a vegetarian, too.
Don't get me wrong:
I looooooooo<33ooooove meat,
but I'm kind of getting sick and tired of all the garbage I'm putting into my body.
I'm not exactly sure how long I'll last as a vegetarian (my resolve and self-control are mucho weak), but hey.

Quick question to vegetarians:
What does your normal daily diet consist of?
Can you give me a brief tour of your meal plans?
Grip me with your eyes.

I kinda agree with AngelAngel, haha.
Pescetarianism is no meat other than seafood like fish and such.

agreed.... yes answer that too
for me, all i can think of is salad... anddd bread andddddd noodles?

fyi, i consider a picky eater to be someone who doesnt like certain food therefore wont eat it. i wouldnt consider a semi-vegetarian a picky eater imo. someone who doesnt like fish because it smells is picky. if you're gonna call a semi-vegetarian a picky eater than a full vegetarian is also a picky eater too so it makes no sense.

I've been one for 5 years now because of ethical reasons and yeah people (including my friends) made fun of me, but eventually they got tired of it and it's now a norm. So don't be afraid of being laugh at, just do it if you want too :3
The only bad thing is when you go out and eat with others x:

My daily diet consists lots of green dark vegtables and fruit. But there's also seaweed, tofu, baked vegtables with bread crumbs (often used in katsu don), kimchi, and if you're a noodle eater, you can still eat noodle from the brand dr. noodle; cuz they make special shiitake and spinach mushroom noodles smile.gif yay taiwan!
for breakfast i eat fruit most of the time. lunch, well, today i had a avocado, tomato and vegan cheese (made out of soybeans) sandwich on wheat bread, then for dinner i had baked broccoli, corn, kimchi and more baked vegtabes. yum ^^~

thy blessed noodles biggrin.gif

you can also eat fake meat too ^^

Makes more sense than a semi-vegetarian, how can you be a semi-vegetarian? When the basis for vegetarianism is not eating meat. It's not one of those things where you can half-assed. You can't be a semi-Christian, or a semi-feminist. Especially since you said you are only not eating red meat, not like even a lot of different meat, just red meat.

first of all, i didnt make up the term "semi-vegetarian" i merely copied it from the person above. 2nd if semi-vegetarian isnt correct then is "Pescetarianism is no meat other than seafood like fish and such." more correct to you?

and please explain how a full vegetarian is considered NOT picky... im sure you will fail.

what's a semi-christian? what's a semi-feminist? explain those and ill let you know if it makes sense enough to be one or not.

calm yourself down. i dont see why ME calling myself a semi-vegetarian will offend you or affect you in any sort of way. most poeple become vegetarian (by the look of the response here) 1. ethical 2. health ... so me cutting red meat will help in both those cases and you're arguing about how the name semi-vegetarian is wrong and that i should be a called picky instead? should i just back to eating red meat since i dont wanna be a picky eater? hahahaha biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif believe me, i can care way less what people label me as and you should too. im just doing this to be more healthy. isnt there something else you should be more worried about like how my ipod is low on battery and i have to go out soon. FTL

why cant we eat just regular noodles?? arent they just flour and such? or like pad thai rice noodles? or ramen?

...but you replied to my comment first my initial comment about the term was in regards to the term itself, it wasn't directed to you.

I think Vegetarians are picky too but there's an actual label for it.

My comparison with the semi-Christian and semi-feminism, is basically people who just pick and choose certain issues they believe in. Like someone who thinks females should get equal pay but at the same time things domestic abuse is perfectly fine. They're an ideology and I don't think just because you fit certain descriptions of it, means you ARE it.

In general I find the term highly pretentious.

I've been a pescetarian since last september. I did it at first to test my self control. And now, i'm in the mind set of.. "I can kill a fish, but not a pig. nor cows. nor ducks". you know? I don't know how long this will last because it is inconvenient some times at events with no veg option.

I think the best benefit I've gotten from being a pescetarian is my current health condition. Seriously.. last spring, I ate burgers everyday. I ate so much meat. I had these random chest pains throughout the day. Now, I don't get those as much. :]

I've been a pescetarian since August 2007, for a few reasons.

1. I was never really a fan of meat anyways
2. I like animals too much to eat them
(except I eat fish.... errrrr ... xD )
3. Once I started, I felt like I would be a failure if I stopped. Not that I have any desire to stop.

But now... I don't think I could eat meat again and feel ethical about it. *shrug* I don't know.

I'm not preachy about it though. I get a lot of people giving me a hard time for not eating meat, but I NEVER look down on someone who does eat meat. unsure.gif

I've been a vegetarian for about 3 years and I love it so far. I became vegetarian because as a yoga student, we learn to appreciate what comes from the earth..and we feel better when we eat with compassion and all that jive...but I still eat eggs and dairy ..not a vegan or anything.

i try to go meatless twice a week, and cut down on lots of fatty meats
but i love fish <3
i know 2 vegetarians
but srsly, if you exercise and workout, you NEED meat.
cause meat has amino acids that comes from no other foods or something like that
