O__o There isn’t anything wrong with being a fob. But if you are from another country…then you are technically a fob. But people wouldn’t consider you a fob just because you have pale skin. A lot of American born Asians have pale skin too~ I usually distinguish fobby people from non fobby people by the clothe and hair.

Skin color doesn't matter where you are from.

You would TECHNICALLY be a fob, but I have two friends who fit this description exactly (born in Asia, moved here when they were very young), and nobody would consider them "fobs". It really depends on how you carry yourself. If you moved here when you were VERY young, then you wouldn't carry yourself like a "fob", so people wouldn't assume you are one when they first meet/see you.

Say you moved here when you were in 6th grade, most likely you would still carry yourself like a "fob", and people would consider you one, but if you moved here when you were a year old, you don't really retain much from where you were born, so people would most likely assume you were born here, therefore, not a "fob".

Accents are a strong indicator of this, regardless of english fluency.

I came here when I was 3 but people don't consider me as a fob and I do think accents play a role too. I guess fob would be someone who doesn't act like they've been in America very long and still hasn't been influence by America very much.

I don't really know where that term comes from.
There are so many different viewpoints, that, to me it doesn't even matter.
"Oh yeah, you're a fob if you talk weird" or "you're a fob because you're not born in America."

But then again, a fobbed is oftem more mentioned when that person speaks weird.
Sigh. All these generalizations today.

i dont think so. fobs usually hang out with their own ethnicities, speak their own languages, and basically havent assimiliated.
still sitting on a shelf and never,

err

i thought a fob was an asian born that lives in america ..... like doesn't matter how long he or she has been living in the U.S. for, if he/she was born in korea then moved to america, then he/she would be fob no matter what .... that's what i thought ... i guess i'm wrong?

like for example. mike was born in korea. he moved to america when he was 6. even though he speaks english fluently with no broken accents, he'd still be a fob??? and don't bring clothes or hair into this mini cooper ... that's non-relevant ..... usa is infested with korea born koreans who wear a&f, hollister, ae, etc ....

Sorry to disappoint you guys but...

fob= fresh off the boat

meaning if they moved here when they were young, they wouldn't be considered fobs. You'd only be a fob if you moved here recently, and usually have a broken english accent, and would still be considered one if your english sucked, regardless of how long you've been here (but you wouldn't be one)

either way they were considered a fob at one point of their life. You don't learn English til you start school (usually at 3/4?) so i guess you would be speaking with a broken English accent for a while.

and the Term was a derogatory term for those who came to N.A from Europe? I think thats how it orginated.

What's so special about fob, anyway?

It annoys me to the max when some people think it's a special thing to be a fob.
And not to mention skin has nothing to do with fob.

Anyone can be a fob.

really though...today's society don't take the word FOB to the point where it's like oh you're an asia born baby but living in America
for the rest of your life. why make it so complicated when it's not.

ransom ppl today say that it's just asians who's been in the U.S for a couple of years and have a funny accent.

WTF
do you guys ever think before you post...or answer??

what does FOB stand for? Fresh Off the Boat.

NOT 15 years off the boat, NOT speaking X language fluently off the boat it stands for FRIGGIN FRESH OFF THE BOAT!!!

and i'm using caps because you people are obviously too oblivious to get this.
no matter what your little teeny-bopper-know nothing friends say, being born abroad and raised in the country you are in now does not make you a FOB.

ESPECIALLY if you have been in (say) america for the majority of your life.

to re-fresh. a fob is NOT:
- someone with pale skin (where the freak did this one come from???)
- someone that speaks an asian language
- an asian person
- a person who likes asian pop music or dramas
- a person that likes a certain style of clothing
- wtc

what a fob MAY BE:
- someone who has JUST arrived in a country and doesn't speak the language well
- someone who has JUST arrived in a country and doesn't know the customs well
- someone who has JUST arrived in a country and doesn't know anything about nothing about that country

and no, just because your parents can't speak english fluently and prefer to stay within a bubble of people of the same nationality, despite being in the US for 25yrs does not make them fobs.

seems your right .. then i don't understand how people can tell other people if they're fobs or not without even meeting them .... it's stupid how they think they can tell by the way he or she dresses ... cuz like i said, there's no connections at all. a&f and hollister are sold in Korea too, so you can never tell by how they dress. being unable to speak the language like you said is FIRST or broken accents
