I was talking my boyfriend about this last night, and we both have different viewpoints about giving homeless people change. I guess I cannot help it because everytime I see a homeless person or someone holding a sign that seems like they need help, I would help them. The most I have ever given to a homeless person is around $5, and my boyfriend said "Why not just give them food?"

Many people, when they see homeless people, they would take so much time to consider why is that person homeless, or what will they do with the money, or maybe they might just buy drugs or alcohol with it. Or they're all scandals, they lie for money.

But even if they lie for money, that means they need help. Without hesitation, I try to help every I see. Is that bad?

Overall, what are your opinions and how do you feel and react when you see a homeless person? If you do help them, how much will you give; or what will you give?

Do you stereotype them by how they look and what they will do with the money you give them? (ex. My mom saw this REALLY skinny guy, and he looked so unhealthy. She came to the conclusion that he does drugs, that's why he looks so sick.)

L0VE . H0PE . HAPPINESS.

I give when I can, haha. If I'm short on change or money I wouldn't give it out... (reminds me of that old bible story where the old lady gave the last of her money.. XD) but like, if I had some spare change... it can go a long way!

I once gave $2 to a homeless guy.

He asked if I can give him $10 more. I was like "WTF???" and I just left him, lol.

I think it depends. Because sometimes you can tell whether that person is really homeless and needs help or whether they're just sleazy guys looking to fund their drug addiction. I try not to stereotype but sometimes its obvious if they call out to you for money or stink of booze.

I dont usually give money, I would rather give them food because if they're on the streets then I think thats they most helpful thing you can do because you cant survive without it. Whereas with money you never know what they're going to do with it.

But I dont have anything against people giving money, its up to the individual.

I usually give a dollar or whatever change I have in the car when I drive near them (like at red lights). People that I give it to are all compassionate and sincere. I hope they don't use the money that I give them for drugs, but I usually give the money to homeless people who are in organizations that are out on the streets.

Add me if you wish. :] Just mention that you're a Soompier!

Depends on the person and situation, like if it was a middle-aged guy who seemed healthy then assumptions are that he made some wrong decisions and i'd probably give him food, groceries, etc. Just go around to a fast food drive through or something.I usually prefer giving food. Just because the whole drugs, alcohol thing.

But when i'm in china for vacation i just end up usually giving money because its a big city and i'm usually in a rush to do something. Plus since the currency exchange is higher u.s to yen i end up with a lot of pocket money.

And i feel like a crap person when i don't give them money. Plus they don't get much especially there where there are lots of homeless people, so its always good to give a little extra money because they need other things like clothes, blankets, etc.

I don't feel sorry for any of the homeless people in stable communities that sit around at a corner and beg because there are numerous amounts of shelters and organizations they could turn to.

If the homeless belong to a poverty stricken community, then yes, I would help.

I'n this case it's not stereotyping it's intuition. Which I think is very important.
I used to help people out, but they're rude.
I'll keep my money to myself. Nobody ever gives me money(except my parents) when I need it. So I'll keep it.

There's a lot of homeless around my school. Whenever I walk by them and they ask for some money, I ask if they want food instead. They usually say yes and I just buy them some food.

I barely see homeless people because I never just take a stroll down the street or something like that. If I did I would just probably give them some spare food I was carrying, because chances are, I never carry money myself, or maybe give them some change.

sometimes, SOMETIMES i give money but that's rare because most of the time i'm close to broke.

one time when me and my parents were coming out of a restaurant with take home bags or leftovers, this homeless guy saw us and asked us if he could have the food for he and his daughter. we told him that we we'll give it to him, but we already ate some of the food. he said "i don't care. my daughter and i haven't eaten for days."

it was so sad. ;_; we gave him all of our food. that was the first time a homeless person ever asked me for food and not money.

and then there's times where my dad offered to buy a homeless person some food, and they were like "NO I WANT MONEY". like wtf? wow...

I gave a homeless man money one time, and he came after me with a knife and demanded my whole wallet. After that, there is no way in hell that I'm ever giving them money again. Anyways, most of the time, they take that money not to buy food but to buy alcohol and cigarettes.

Jeez.. not all bums spend their money on drugs and alchohol. But giving them food is a better idea.

I give them my change like a couple of coins. But I did that like only a couple of times, not a lot because many of them are just scandals. Like my sister's teacher gave a guy 20 dollars once and then he saw that same guy a week later dressed in a suit with a nice car. >_< I would be so mad if that happened to me.

I'd always feel so sympathetic towards them because they look so helpless T.T If I could, I would give them a few bucks but I feel a little intimidated to approach them :[
