I bascially slacked off my whole high school year, now Im a junior with a 1.8 (college view) gpa. I have 160 credits.
I have to repeat 3 classes. Spanish2 - F , Chemistry - D-, & Algebra2 - D.

Which course do you think I should take for summer school?
Im thinking of taking Alg2 for summer school, then repeat Chem & Spanish my senior year

God I feel like im taking 10th grade stuff.
Anyways, my question is, what do you think I should do after highschool?

Im thinking of going to a CC then transfer to a UC (IF POSSIBLE =_=)
Or
Go to San Jose State California

??

well, if you go to CC, your highschool record is like wiped out, and some have programs which guarantee admittance into a university [usually are better than one you can get into outside CC]

since your GPA is kind of low, i would probably go for the CC and rebuild my school rep.

what's a "college view" gpa? lol. but um, have you already been accepted to sjsu?

anyway, i would go to a CC because i think your work ethic will improve since it's like starting from scratch and you have no where to go really. lol. so yeap. go to a CC -> work harder to earn good GPA -> transfer through TAG (transfer admission guarantee) stuff to a UC or state.

My personal advice would be, not to discredit yourself just yet. Many colleges, while they do look at objective things such as GPA and courses taken... A lot of them are looking at personal statements, and being less objective.

I would get involved with your community -- doing volunteer work, joining various clubs that are relevant to what you want to do, or be involved with school activities.

Some people do poorly in Algebra 2 but excel in Calculus. So, work hard and try to bring up your GPA... while trying to maintain some activity with your school.

Have you taken the SAT or ACTs?

hey you remind me of me, but I had a 2.5 lol. It's never too late, my suggestion make it all up or as much as you can over the summer because once senior come, oh boy senioritis will get you! haha I had a F in Physiology, D in Spanish 2, Chemistry, and English 3. I'm making it up right now, a pain in the booty!! I took physiology in the fall and changed my F to an A, English 3 D to a B. Right now I'm working on Spanish and Chemistry, if i didnt have to take those classes only 4 classes for me, but sadly im re doing it all senior year =['

I was thinking about community college but once senior year started and college talk was in the air, it made me feel bad about myself. Like everyone is talking about college, and i had nth to talk about. So yeah that's why I'm making up all my classes. I'm admitted to CSU Eastbay ( lol who isn't) and San Jose State. I have to keep my grades up, other than that i'm set. If i can do it, anyone can.

Going to a community college sounds like a good idea for you. Just make sure that you don't screw up again. There aren't many more chances after that.

I agree with the previous posters. going to a community college not only guarantees you a spot in a 4yr college, since most CCs do have some kind of program that will help you get accepted to a 4yr college, but is also wayyy cheaper.

seeing some friends go to CC and save bunch of money sometimes makes me double-think if i did the right choice of going to a 4yr right away.. but oh well. tongue.gif

on summer classes.. are you only allowed to take 1 class during the summer? if possible, i would take both chem and alg 2. i think taking classes during the summer is a great way to help you understand subjects that you may not have completely understood during the school year because you're concentrating on only one or two classes rather than a whole load. you also spend more time in a day studying that subject which, in my opinion, increases the chances of retaining all the information that you learned in class.

whatever you decide to do, i wish you good luck!!

I suggest you go to where you can. You might f-ck up again at a CC.

You screwed up, so what? You're human. The most important thing is to go forward from now on and have a strong mindset. Go to CC and do your best. Remember, you're only hurting yourself with a low GPA.

just take the classes over the summer and try to bring it up as much as you can. than maybe CC, it'll help you get on track with what you want to do and plus it saves money

D is still considered passing, right?
You can still receive your high school diploma with D's, since they're considered passing.
If you plan on going to a CC, then you wouldn't need to make up those grade as it wouldn't really matter.
Make up the classes if you want to go to San Jose.
It's always safe to make the classes up anyways though.
Just in case you decide you really do not wish to go to a CC.

As others have already said, community college is the best way to go. You don't even need to take the SAT's to get in. Also, it's very easy to transfer to a better college after community college.

[nods] I changed my mind after getting accepted to Cal Poly Pomona going 2 years of community college then transferring out. I feel like I want to degrade myself and work my way up there just cause I dont even know what my major is going to be after having second thoughts. I've gotten 2 D's before, but I made it up in time before the semester ended, to a B infact.

From what I notice, people (like myself) are just lazy to do their work cause either they are over-confident or are not confident at all. And sometimes there are just a substantial amount of work that will eventually grow on you to get lazier or overdoing yourself. I screwed up this year as a senior, but I can care less cause the lowest grade I got was like a D, being too over-confident and was lazy. I bet you all can relate right? rolleyes.gif

If I were you, I wouldnt worry about it. Unless it prevented you from graduating and you are a senior, I'd get the ball rolling.

also, you can save yourself some money by going to a community college first and transferring..

sorry the main thing that caught me off guard was that you said san jose state california... and not university.

omg, that sounds EXACTLY how i was in high school. my grades SUCKED up until senior year cause i knew i wouldn't graduate if i didn't do well.
my GPA was like a 2.0ishhh then at the end it was 3.6! 8D

ANYWAY, lol. i think it depends how you do your senior year (everything counts!). DON'T slack off senior year cause you'll regret it.
before senior year started, we had to apply to schools for this guidance thing and i only applied to CCs.
i didn't even know i could get into a university/collage with my grades. then in march of senior year, i applied to universities in ny and nj,
and i was accepted to all of them (well the ones that weren't filled yet >___>)
TOO BAD i had to stay at a CC in my town cause i didn't get ANY financial aid AT ALL.

it's true it's easier to transfer into a UC after graduating from a CC, but you won't get the full college experience (or at least, that's how it is in my situation, lol).
and since the CC are in your COMMUNITIES, there's people you'll know in them, and you'd hate it if you wanted to get away from all that. (like me -__-)

i say you don't slack off senior year, then you'll get really good grades, and maybe you'll get accepted to UCs.
you can apply to CCs as safety schools too, just in case.
btw, can't you take more than one summer class? i remember when i failed chemistry and history, i had to take both LOL.
it might be different for you then?

GOOD LUCK! ^^

my GPA was like a 2.0 then at the end it was 3.6! 8D and i was at the top 20% of my graduating class~

just out of curiosity.. how was that possible?

taking that your gpa is on 4.0 scale, your freshman year gpa doesn't count, and you had a super high gpa (4.5) for your senior year gpa, i don't see how you can get 3.6 as the total high school gpa.

2.0 average * (2 years as a soph and a jr) = 4.0
4.5 average *(1 year as a senior) = 4.5

3 years of high school gpa = (4.0 + 4.5) / 3 = 2.83

not trying to argue. i'm just curious.

Ah, my boyfriend goes to San Jose State!San Jose State is one of the top 5 best state schools in California. I heard they have a great business/nursing program there so it wouldn't hurt to attend there if you're majoring in any of those. Plus, you live close by to it. UC acceptances are worst than ever because of the downfall of the economy. I suggest you go to a community college and then transfer. It gives you a higher chance to get into the UC you want. Plus, you'll save lots of money, too! :]

Cheer up. I definitely think CC is the way to go since you'll be at a clean slate. That "college experience" is what you make of it, so don't stress about that. People give CCs such a bad reputation, but I see nothing but positive things. You just have to put a little bit more effort to be involved. I live in ESSJ and commuted to Foothill/DeAnza and do not regret it one bit (traffic can be a hoot, but it made me more disciplined in using my time wisely). Along the way, you may change your major, and luckily in a CC, that won't break your bank. That's what happened to me; I was going to apply for a UC, but decided to change my major to nursing and now I'm in the SJSU nursing program (many of my classmates already have earned a degree at other universities, but decided to get a nursing degree afterwards, and wished they hadn't wasted so much money).

If get into the uni of your choice with a major you want, go ahead.

If you are a little iffy about a major, I recommend CC to explore your options.

Is 1.8 your overall gpa? Did you mess up only this year or all 3 years?
With any gpa lower than a 3.0 it would be really hard to get into a uc.
I understand your situation because I screwed up in my freshman year too, but now I am a mid year grad (graduating first semester), and taking cc courses for 2nd semester, waiting for fall 09 for uc. Basically I made up all my classes asap, took summer school, ap classes, honors, and a bunch of concurrent enrollment courses.

UC gpa excludes 9th grade. Its basically 10th - 11th grade and they wait for your senior grades..

In my school, theres also a 3rd period for summer school!
retake algebra for summer + do concurrent enrollment for 1 class at a cc. Math is super easy during summer because the classes are long so you actually get time to do homework in class. I find it hard to do hw at home since there are so many distractions. No more going out for you!! or AIM!! or games!!! or SOOMPI! soompi is addicting! Just don't turn on your computer or disconnect your internet if your serious. You have to make sacrifices!!! ALOT!
just one easy class because cc classes are fast paced, you will not be able to handle two.
if your not done with p.e. class, you should take that at a cc.

retake spanish & chem or (physics/biology) all you need is 2 years of science.

Take advantage of after school classes, saturday classes, and/or night classes!

btw isn't it 2nd semester in high school right now? You can still change your grade for 2nd semester!

CC's aren't bad at all! $20 a unit is great! just make sure you don't slack off and transfer!
