I've suddenly been breaking out this past year a ridiculous amount, and I wanted to see a dermatologist.. I was wondering what everyone's experiences with dermatologists are. Do they usually help a lot?

also, if anyone sees a good dermatologist in the New York City area, could you give me the name? thanksss!

My face was terrible for God knows how long.. I went to dermatologist last November, and now my face is almost clear smile.gif
But my friend went to other dermatologist, and her face got worst..
I think that you just need to find the right (and good) dermatologists..
Oddly enough, the dermatologist that my friend went to (the one that made her face worst) got a really high ratings in yelp.. So, I think you need to try and see the dermatologist yourself..

But yeah, in my experience, dermatologist does help smile.gif

I would say just take accutane ^___^
it's like magic, my face is completely clear now and I don't even have to worry about getting my face dirty, which used to cause break outs for me tongue.gif

I'm taking doxycycline pills and using Duac gel for my face. I saw improvement after one day! My face is less oily, less red, and it got rid of some blackheads as well.

However, I went to a dermatologist in Japan a few months ago. She looks at my face, says, "It's not that bad," and charges me $75 for some vitamin B6 pills and a tiny tiny tube of dalacin T which did nothing at all.

So it depends on the dermatologist.

Haha, don't worry. Going to the dermatologist is awesome.
I went there for my first time 2 day's ago.
Saw, mad improvement on my face.
All the dermatologist will do, is ask you question's like: what have you been using on your face?, how long did u have ur acne/acne scar for?, if ur a girl they will ask you about your period.
Then, they check your face to see what type of acne u have, and probably they might pick some pimples to pop the puss.
Then, he will recommend you medication's, soap's, cleanser's, or etc.

Right now, i'm using Minocycline pills and Retin-A-Micro. xD

accutane is one of the best pills for acne but whoever wants to use it should definitely talk to a dermatologist really well first especially for girls. It is harmful if you take it too long. if you're in the age of wanting to start a family then stay away from it.

that's from my experience with my dermatologist.

I heard that in some cases, the derma will prescribe you medicine that will make your acne seem like it's getting worse, but the "worsening" of the acne/pimples is expected to happen before it starts clearing up. o________O?!

wtfudge. o-o

My cousin has horrible acne, and she keeps going to this derma, and it didn't really help her LOL. She went to another to have them..injected or something xD;;; And it got better...like, instantly o-o
I have internet connection problems.

And no, I don't have a 411...yet.

I started going to go the dermatologist in November I think. I've had 3 appointments and seen him for about a total of 4 minutes >_>

basically they look at my skin, tell me to keep doing what im doing (which isn't helping), and send me on my way.

My former dermatologist was awful. Each session was only about five minutes, if not shorter. I had to pay $30 co-pay each time for that crappy five minutes. On the first appointment, he stared mostly at his clip board and my feet. He did not even examine my face. He immediately prescribed doxycycline after explaining to me HLT 101 about puberty and increase in oil production. Never once during the half year I visited him did he examine my skin. In the end, it was an awful waste of money. While my skin has fewer acne (though still a problem), it's resilience has faded. I feel like an old woman after using the cream he gave me. I could go on, but make sure you call the office beforehand and speak to the receptionist. Know that he/she has experience with acne prone skin, and know what his/her specialties are. That was my mistake =/

how much a dermatologist can "help" you depends on your condition and the doctor themself. i've gone to a few for some minor skin conditions and they've all been cleared up.

as for recommendations for a derm in your area, you should first check to see what providers are linked with your insurance company/plan.

i asked my doctor to prescribe me something and she said i didn't need it (shocker ohmy.gif ) but i said yes i do (lol)
and she got me this

clindamycin phosphate topical gel

but not to overuse it cuz i 'don't really need it' butit works ! o.o; so maybe u can ask ur doc.

my friend went to a derm. and she said it wasn't worth it.. her derm only told her what to do (which is all the info you can find here on soompi, drink water, dont touch, etc. etc... in 8 ave/brooklyn)

There's a joke that all of us share about those derm it goes:

If it is dry, moisten it, if it is moisten - dry it. Congratulations, now you are a dermatologist.

I'm that a**hole you paged at 3am for a surgery consult about a pt. in the ER complaining of abdominal pain
