Anyone got any ideas? It's at the dealership now, but I'm worried about the cost.

did you have the e-brake on when you tried to push it or maybe it was in gear? You need to put it in neutral and ebrake off to push. anyway i also think its transmisson failure. Is the car under warranty?

It was in drive when the man tried to push it. As for warranty, it has a 3 year/36000 mile bumper to bumper, and a 70,000/7 year powertrain. The transmission should be covered right?

If you didn't experience this before (and this was a sudden failure), odds are the transmission solenoids went bad and not the whole transmission itself. Solenoids are electrical actuators that pull in each gear, this is what does the shifting of gears. This is probably an failed solenoid and typically solenoids can be replaced (most of them usually) with the transmission still inside the car. Other possibilities is the gear selector switch on the transmission, which if failed the transmission cannot get into gear, bed). Also check some online Dodge Neon forums to see if others have had this issue, because from what you describe, this is actually issue that you can complain to the NHTSA (federal) about as a safety issue (leading to a recall, because of this sudden failure of the transmission while driving can result in accident).
The first thing I would do is talk to the dealership to get them to do the repair for you under the powertrain warranty. If they heistate or resist, then tell them that this sudden transmission failure could've resulted in a accident which could lead to a lawsuit against Dodge ultimately... If your dealership is shady about it, take the complaint to the Dodge headquarters and they may help in getting it repaired.

Yah you should be covered.. and nobody can push a car when it's on drive. Next time you try to push your car, put it in neutral (:

The solenoid has nothing to do with being able to move the shifter into another position
That's like saying you can't shift into a gear on a manual transmission because I don't have the key in the ignition
The car directs hydraulic pressure within the valve body which has maze of openings shifted by the solenoids to shift gears.
If you hear a loud bang it could be anywhere from the clutch disks to the belts, or heck even the torque converter coming off the flexplate.
But like the OP mentioned above, the car would not move in, I'm hoping you meant neutral, so it sounds like a couple pieces seized.
ps. TO EVERYONE: Low fluid can also make any kind of transmission inoperable so make sure you maintain your car correctly!
Have a nice day
