Hey dunno if this is the right place to ask but it's related to cars I guess right? So I just purchased my first car recently and I know I'm most likely gonna need a GPS system to get me around. I searched online but most of the GPS systems I see look really familiar but the prices vary greatly. Does anyone have any recommendations? What kind of features do the more expensive models have that the cheaper ones don't, etc..

I like the TomTom One series. Decent price and quality GPS. IIRC, turn-by-turn direction is the only FREE feature that you should want to look out for (if you like it). More expensive models have other premium features like traffic conditions, red light cameras, ect., but you have to pay for those services.

Garmin also makes quality GPS.
I won't bother since I won't read the rules and they won't accommodate.

i have the 3rd edition tomtom, its decent but sometimes its a lil tweaky and whacky, but it does get you from point A to point B... you get what you pay for.

My friends both have a Garmin Nuvi.. I think it's pretty darn good haha
My other friend has a Magellan? it's alright. I'd prefer a Garmin over TomTom

There is a cheap one that I like by Sony: Sony NV-U44 $80ish.

This one has a interesting feature that has a split screen to show your location and show how the freeway divides and what lane to be in. Its especially helpful if you live where there are complicated freeway systems.

I'd recommend the garmin nuvi 265t (i think thats the model name). it should be under $300 & offer you quite a lot of options. This one has free traffic, although there are supposed to be ads on it to keep it free. Nuvi's have a really clean interface to work with. If you need bluetooth and stuff your going to be throwing in more money, but to my own experience bluetooth on the navi sucks.

garmin, thats all ive used but even their cheap stuff that i use for work only really fails me when im going to places that arent in my map update, but i go to anywhere from 3-5 houses/places a day working and its always on it. a $90 refurbished street pilot is what i bought i think, way better than i expected. i cant tell the difference between coworkers nicer ones except mines slightly bulkier, works the exact same.

I put a Avic-D3 in my Z a couple months ago.

Not too hard to install or bypass...I'll take a couple pics of it and post it up tomorrow.

I have a Tom Tom ONE... it's ok. It has been very useful, but like everyone else said it has some flaws but a great bargain GPS.

If you want the best, Garmin seems to be the unanimous favorite in terms of hardware and software quality and features. Of course it comes with the premium price as well.

If you want free traffic alerts for life get a Navigon 7100T. Almost all Navigon models have this now.

If you want a horribly insensitive touch screen, slow satellite connect speed on startup, and slow processor get a Navigon 7100T.

Though the user-friendliness is crap it still works in not getting me lost (I have one) and gives me alternate routes to bypass traffic on the fly. The buttloads of time that it saves me from traffic makes its flaws forgivable. But maybe all navi's come with free traffic alerts nowadays I'm not sure.
