with the unstable economy it seems like it would not be a good time for people to start families and buy homes? what if you both lost your jobs and couldnt pay? it seems so scary if a person had a family and lost thier job in these bad times?

On the upside, the average cost for a house in Detroit is now less than $20,000!

most couple's live with their parent's even after marriage. I know a few, where the whole family live under the same roof, aunty, uncle, cousin, grandma, grandpa etc... This is the "son" .. most daughter live away.

Yes it is scary. But keep in mind that marriage and buying a home are two of the most important things in your life. Usually, homes last longer than marriages. tongue.gif

What's important is to prepare yourself, save as much as you can before you take the plunge (on either one).

I wouldn't even want to live in Detroit in the first place.

Sometimes foreclosed homes have hidden costs, such as repairs needed and that kind of thing. Though I do have to agree on that. biggrin.gif

OP, why not get a "starter" home? A small house that's inexpensive, but in a relatively good area.

Most people are going back to school now--as evidenced by the number of rejections I have gotten from law schools that should admit me based on my numbers--in light of this economy. It isn't exactly the best of times to start a family or to buy a home; however, on the upside, this isn't the worst the economy has ever been. The hungry haven't even started to make mass lines at soup kitchens--at least not yet.

In any case, it is scary since job security is now a large issue. But, on a happy note, go ahead and move either to Wyoming, Utah, or Hawaii: the highest in happiness polls.

Cheers to all who are job hunting/looking to go back to professional school and good luck!

Personally I will be out in the job market in several months as I graduate from my radiography (x-rays) program. I already said to myself that I will not settle down and start a family until i'm financially stable (as thats the responsible thing to do), but seeing the economical times, it looks that may take a little longer.

Yeah? I guess you should reconsider your future and better assess your options.

My cousin is like that. She is a stay at home mom with 3 kids (and another on the way!!) and her husband just lost his job. They have a lot of mouths to feed... so they had to move back in with my aunt. It must be very scary for them right now.

This girl on another forum is about 18, with a kid, and her husband just lost his job, I think. She doesn't have a job either, so she's been getting really upset.

Yeah we're having that problem atm sad.gif We were actually considering getting married this month but then I miscarried in January and the credit crunch happened and. Blah. -___- It really sucks. As others have said, house prices are really low atm too. Stay with your parents as long as possible and save up, I guess.

^ Yeah, well, as rich as some of the Detroit suburbs are, not many people want to live in actual Detroit itself even in the best of times. I sure wouldn't, especially from the descriptions I've gotten from a guy I know who's from the Detroit area. Literally about half the buildings in that city are empty, and Detroit is the crime capital of the USA.
Hey, look! Finally a different signature after all these years!

well if you move out to the boonies you wouldnt have this problem, but of course everybody wants to live in a place that's lively and kickin so of course the cost of living would be more expensive. Yeah, it sure is tough, but I think one thing Americans need to learn is HOW to SAVE their money and use it EFFICIENTLY on necessities.

It sure is tough, but you do what you can to stretch your dollar and you have to kick serious ass to find jobs. Marriage shouldn't be a problem at all for this, in fact it should help you a lot, as long as you don't poop out kiddos because kids are $$$$$.

One thing that pisses the crap out of me are the dads who kill their family because the dad has lost his job and doesnt know what else to do. ISN'T THAT COMPLETELY MESSED UP!?!?! Good gawd, I know it's hard but you should end your entire families' life bc of that! If you guys haven't heard of these incidents, it's all over the news. These people are ridiculous!! It's not the freakin end of the world, JEEEZ

People have to make compromises with the economy as of now. Wait till things get better. Marriage and house can wait. Just be diligent in your work and don't worry about so much.

Well, you don't have to get a house right away, a little apartment is fine. Usually, most people I know move into an apartment; get use to living the married life, and then once they build a pretty good income, they go for a house... Luckily for me, my parents plan to leave me their house (the house I'm currently living in), so yeah. they're about to retire so when they do, they're going go back and forth between Vietnam and America.

There's an up and a down-side. If their jobs are stable enough and they are making enough money, it would be an okay time to start a family and buy a house. House prices are low.
But imo, people shouldn't even try to buy a house or start a family if they won't be able to afford it (lack of steady income and sufficient savings). It's rather irresponsible. If worse comes to worst, they could lose more than just their job. Financial problems are amongst the top reasons people divorce.
