I considered posting this elsewhere on the forum to get a greater response, but thought I'd want to hear from people who've actually experienced this themselves, or have past experiences to give them a better idea of what they're talking about. If you're under 20 and have something to share, please pm me!
I'm doing a web internship right now with a startup, and the most interesting work I've done so far with this company is UI design for their new features and applications. I know how to use all the standard graphics programs (CS4 including flash) but am lacking on the programming end of things (I know HTML and some CSS). What can I do to become an interaction designer? I have a BA in architecture. What additional studies/degrees would be helpful?
Has anyone studied Human Factors? Is it very practical and necessary for this field? How about a degree in HCI? Or even Operations Research?
It seems like a fairly new field, so finding some direct info and comparing different programs has been difficult. Right now I'm considering Berkeley's HCI program or Stanford's D-school (since I'm very interested in employment at IDEO). Is Carnegie Mellon also supposed to be a leader in this field?
[edit]
Maybe there should be a post-undergrad studies thread or subforum for topics like this?

Hi there.
I don't work as an interaction designer or know anything in that field, however I did take some studies up for it at university. I say enrol yourself into university for some interactive and interface design classes. It teaches you on how to best communicate and process information from an UI medium.
Either that or ask the random people on webmaster forums.

It seems like you are primarily focused on the psychology behind creating effective UI. I have no clue about that nor any information regarding whats types of classes would facilitate that but in terms of technical abilities and skills to help you become a better UI developer from all angles? You already know Flash which is a plus. You definitely need to know more of CSS as that surrounds the visual layout of the UI. You definitely need to know Ajax which heavily affects UI as well as backend interaction. Secondary to these, some knowledge in web programming (php, asp, cfm, ruby, etc) and database would also help. Not required but it can help you better understand the other side of the house which in turn can influence your UI decisions.
Maybe you can post this in the college forum for some more input?
