Why Are Some People Offended When They're Called Asian? Does being called "ASIAN" offend you?

- Have you ever noticed that some people are extremely offended when you call them Asian? Is it because people think all Asians are Chinese? It happens with certain groups where I live. Then they say things like "We're not Asian, we don't have slanted eyes! We don't eat with chopsticks! We don't speak Ching Chong Ching!".

Someone was mentioning that certain groups, such as Filipinos, become offended when they're called Asian? they want to be called Spanish or Brown? (page 4)

What's so offensive about being called Asian? mellow.gif

Have you ever seen normal Taiwanese or Korean people walking around on streets? Most of them have huge noses, small chinky eyes and flat noses and look nothing like those celebrities you see in dramas. And sorry, but most Korean celebrities you see on TV underwent a lot of plastic surgeries in order to look like what you see on TV. I think this should be well-known by all K-Pop-fans.

I was reading some topics on Soompi and I noticed people talking about it, like the person in my signature. She claims to have been offended when she was called Asian. I don't get it.

Can anyone explain?

well not to offend anyone, but I've noticed certain topics asking...Are Filipinos really Asian? and then I see some people posting that they're not and they bring up stereotypes. Then there's a big argument and it gets locked.

Are Filipinos Asian? I always thought they were. What's so offensive about being called Asian?

ya maybe...but Asian-wannabe is different than being called Asian?

Ya I don't even get why people talk about Filipinos in that way. Some of my family is from the Philippines, they are really nice people. Do some people on Soompi have something against Filipinos?

Did u know there's actually a lot of Koreans moving into the Philippines now? biggrin.gif

I just find that if you call someone a race they are not, they get offended. Kind of logical to get offended when someone calls you something you aren't.

I don't think that most people get offended.
Unless you're saying it in as an insult.

People who don't like to be called Asians might be white-washed? o_O
But then I know people who don't care that they are.

I keep getting called an asian-wannabe, it's so annoying, not because I hate asian culture or anything (would I be replying to this post right now... :D) it's just plan arrogant. I like asian culture and stuff and am not from an asian background, but yet I'm an asian-wannabe and striving to be one. I'm not. :D I just like asian stuff. That's, annoying.

Whereas, maybe people get offended if they're calling a white person asian(since it's like wtf). But if this asian person IS actually asian and is getting offended and saying that back then... I don't know maybe they classify themselves as not asian as a person of where they live.(For example, an american.) Or if the term is being used as an insult.

As for the filipinos case, I'm sure we have quite a lot of members currently in the phillipines or from a filipino background, they get no discrimination on soompi. :3(Someone asked if Soompi had something against them...) I think people have different views on whether filipinos are asian or not. I think they are. But different opinions. ^_^

haha, well, my guess would be that it's been used in a negative way? X:
like, "you're so ASIAN" .. it's generally used to describe something kinda.. nerdy? X:
like, doing well on a test or something like that haha.
being smart =/= being asian. =/ but, if it's not used negatively,
i suppose they're just insecure. and for a non-asian..
they may think they're being mocked/made fun of?
so take it as an insult? haha. idk =/
