Out of business, engineering, and medicine.

Business-
Although the economic situation will probably clear up in several years, it seems that our nation is becoming more and more socialist in the long run. It has been doing so for most of the 20th century until now.

Engineering-
Outsourcing is taking jobs away from those with good technical skills. It is unsure how quickly outsourcing will continue, or if it will become reversed.

Medicine-
It seems as if socialized medicine is becoming a reality nowadays, and the future might not look too bright in this field in terms of earning money.

So, what has America left for those students who are truly motivated (in a monetary sense) and wish to earn more than the average party-all-you-want kid? The future doesn't look too bright, except maybe for law.

Majoring in any of these doesn't mean you have to stay in the country. Though it's hard to find any country with better tax laws and social freedoms than we currently have here. Maybe Australia.

not true. coming from an engineering background, i can tell you that the outsourcing is actually significantly decreasing with the economy getting worse. the government is working hard for citizens and residents to have the job security before companies hire people from outside the country by enforcing some laws that make outsourcing difficult. i've been looking at job ads on the internet for my friend who's having a really difficult time finding a job and i see that most of the job positions in ads require U.S. citizenship.

Business - Really broad. Whether you're an economist, accountant, etc., there will always be jobs available to you in the States. Given its current economic woes, you're obviously not going to land a job near any financial districts, but creative, outside-the-box thinkers are always getting scooped. The company I work for are still busily scouting the "tops" even in these restructuring times.

Engineering - Everything is being outsourced. It's an honest concern, but you have to be more specific. Engineering is really broad and for your purposes, it can be extremely lucrative if you pursue a higher degree. One of my friend graduated from Columbia with a graduate degree in engineering and he's banking close to $200K.

Medicine - Not really sure about this one.

If your desire is to chase money, I say be in business. Of the three, it's a field where more risk equals more $. Personally I wouldn't put too much weight on making a lot of $$$ based on the field. Choose a major in something that interest you and $$$ will follow.

I can't say anything for business or much for engineering. However, my friend with a chem eng degree is having some difficulty getting a job. I think she was looking for product design or something not sure.

Medicine- Depends on what you specialize and what field you go into. Medicine may not bring you to wealth, but you'll live a comfortable life (for the most part) no matter what the economy is. If you're going in medicine for the money, don't. It won't be worth it. 4 yr med school and 3+ year residency depending on specialty. That's 7 years of heavy debt assuming you didn't have any in undergrad.

I mentioned in another of my posts, but 2 years of med school my debt is 6 figures and in case you were wondering I carried no debt from undergrad.

I'm that a**hole you paged at 3am for a surgery consult about a pt. in the ER complaining of abdominal pain
