Makes you wonder what really lies beyond in the innerworkings of the universe.
It's rather beautiful to see things in such a grand scale.

Sorry for the randomness. I'm currently reading A Brief History of Time.
I won't bother since I won't read the rules and they won't accommodate.

^^^ who's to say that any of it exist though? It might be that we're the creation of a brain in a vat somewhere and none of us are real. We might be living in some virtual world that was created by a computer program for the enjoyment of some other great species to observe and we just don't realize it.

Oh look - I learned something from philosophy. ::skips off to read philosophy book::

Significance is all in the mind. I'd rather say, how insignificant everything else is because we are egocentric individuals anyway.

Just because a single atom in my body can't been seen without the naked eye doesn't mean it's insignificant.
It's all part of my body that helps it function.

Significance is relative.
4:30 PM Central Pacific time on a sunny and cool Friday may not seem significant to many, but it sure is to me! wink.gif

I may seem insignificant when compared to VY Canis Majoris, but to the little girl getting on the bus today, I was the biggest obstacle between her and getting that last seat.

I don't understand. How so?
I love pancakes as much as the next person.
If you want to see freaky, try ordering a Grand Slam at Denny's at 3:30 in the morning and get a load of the freaky-looking degenerates eating there at that time.
It's like the Cantina bar scene in Star Wars.

I think it was also philosophy and Descartes that gave us "I think, therefore I am". Even though our world might be fiction, just knowing that I am here makes it real to me, does it not?

Really? I thought people would find it funny at the cost of the mildly retarded unsure.gif Might just be my weird sense of humor though.

Yes, but doesn't it make you wonder what lasting impact we as a specie will leave behind? Isn't it the aspiration of men to forge some sort of legacy that he will be remembered by? What possible significance are we compare to the whole?

Earth already looks tiny from a plane - almost makes you think you can walk home from wherever you're going.

I once tried to learn a bit more about philosophy as a way to round out my science-heavy education. I also once had a good neighbour who had absolutely no interest in science. He didn't care where electricity came from, how soap works, why the inside of his fridge was cold, how TVs/phones/the internet work, or why he needs air. The sciences all bored him to tears and understanding any of it would have no meaningful impact on the way he lives life - soap is soap, and that's all there is to it. It's not until I gained an understanding of philosophy, or more specifically learnt about existentialism, that I truly understood how he felt about science.

Sure individually we are insignificant according to size, but we can have a huge impact depending on our actions in others' lives.

Yes, very true.
Take midget suicide bombers, for example.

try reading some books by Michio Kaku, he's a quantum physicit but he asks very interesting questions about our lives and the universe as a whole. He also wrote a really fascinating book on the Physics of the impossible.

Sounds like the Matrix.
