Hehe, go to collegeprowler.com and check out the student-written reviews on housing, dining, parking, etc.
That's what I'm doing for my college ^ ^ ; and it's helped out quite a bit! You have to register and provide proof that you're going to U of I next year though (UIUC school email) ~
Congrats on the acceptance btw
that school is becoming more and more ridiculously difficult to get accepted into..

yessss!!!! another person at last! i'm starting at u of i next fall too! but most people on soompi are from california, so i had to research a lot of it myself...
basically, here's what i found (i have never visited campus btw):
-the 6 pack has a very high percentage of freshman... it's made up of the peabody dorms and the gregory dorms and on the champaign side of town... it's probably one of the loudest dorms, but not so loud that you can't study... a good place to meet lots of people and close to the quad... however, there is currently construction going on by this area, so you might want to take that into consideration... it's also close to the gym.
-FAR/PAR... like the name sounds, it's one of the farthest dorms from campus, but it's also the most diverse dorms since PAR is international... lots of engineers there and on urbana side... one of the few places with air conditioning if that's really important to you... or otherwise, bring a fan... lot of freshman and engineers end up here because they apply for housing late...
-allen hall is my first choice... it's a living learning community, which means that there is a close knit community and there are classes offered inside the dorm... it's a bit geared toward art students... they also have guest residents that are semi-famous to live and talk with the students... it's close to the quad and a gym... in urbana
-ISR is popular with engineers since it's close to the engineering quad, but i dont think it's too popular among freshman?
these are the main options, but there are other programs like weston exploration (for people not sure about their major and want to explore different options), snyder substance-free (just like it sounds), and garner LEADS (??? no idea)
also single sex halls such as LAR, barton, and busey-evans for girls and lundgren for guys.... tend to be quieter and more religious?
look into private certified housing if you are willing to pay a bit more for things like room service, air conditioning, and more private bathrooms... bromley is popular..
all of the dorms are about the same in size (which means very, very small) and you can eat at any dining hall, not just the ones in your dorm... also, distance doesn't really matter much because there is a good busing system and bus stops are in front of every dorm
message me if you want to talk more

I'm going to u of i too. =]
I don't have much info to share but I chose peabody drive (part of it, along with gregory drive, is the 6 pack) b/c it has a lot of freshmen, is close to the university, and is near the gym. I could've made a bad choice though. ^^;; I also chose the health llc but was too lazy to submit an essay so I'm prolly not gonna get in ><
