*doesn't know if the word chink is filtered*

Anyway,

My friends and I say jαp, chin, viet, flip all the time but when a western person says "Are you jαp? Chin? Viet?" it just sounds rude..?

And do you consider chink a racist word? Like when a western says, "Hey Chink!", "Be quiet Chink", do you get offended?

I heard it's suppose to be like, the "n word" version for Chinese people...?

I think they are considered to be rude terms. And definitely, "chin-k" I would say is veryyy rude.

eh no I don't care... depends on how it its said though. If it was meant as an insult then yeah I would get pissed ^^''
If ppl come up to me and asked out of curiosity if I were Flip then neh I don't mind but if it's in an insulting way then hell yeah.

Its a way to label someone. Nothing wrong with it imo.

japanese, Chin, Viet and Flip are not rude or racist in my book.
They're just Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese and Filipino abbreviated.

I think it's okay to refer objects to their short form, but when you're describing someone's race/language/etc, you shouldn't

well saying chink is not really meant to be offensive.
sometimes, it's meant to be a joke. but it really depends on the person.
i mean...i don't see anything wrong with it.

flip, viet, chin, japanese etc... is just the abbreviation of the actual word.
nothing rude about it...

I'm fine with it and and most of them are just abbreviated. For chink, it depends on how the person says it and what are we talking about, but mostly its a joke, so I don't take it out of context and get all offended by it. I'm cool with it. 8D. LOL.

A lot of these terms have a racist history from the military. I think people need to really research this history as to why some are offended by it.

Chink, if you're referencing towards a person of Asian descent...most specifically Chinese. That term has a racist history and is considered racist by many. japanese has that as well, but I can understand if you're just using it as a shorten term.

I have never heard anything about the term Viet being a racist term. There's other racist terms that have been used to acknowledge Viets.

Flip also has a history, as the military used to label Filipinos ..Flip which stood for "F***** Little Island People". However, there are many younger generation of Fil-Ams who use it to sound "cool".

If you're using these terms among your friends, who are not offended, it's understandable. However, I would recommend not to use these terms openly, especially with people you don't know.

Most likely the younger generation are using the words just trying to joke around, but what they think is funny isn't always funny to others.

Have you ever seen normal Taiwanese or Korean people walking around on streets? Most of them have huge noses, small chinky eyes and flat noses and look nothing like those celebrities you see in dramas. And sorry, but most Korean celebrities you see on TV underwent a lot of plastic surgeries in order to look like what you see on TV. I think this should be well-known by all K-Pop-fans.

It's the filters, you can't say j-a-p, the filters will just automatically write it as japanese

Well, yeah. The word ' j a p ' was used during the second world war.

Just because it sounds like a short form for japanese, doesn't mean you should use it, because it can translate to another meaning too.

And Japanese people take it very serious so I don't blame him for not "chilling". I know I wouldn't be "chilling" if someone said chink, or if you called a black person the n word, etc.

I don't think anyone should use the short term for any race, like I said: I think it's okay to refer objects to their short form, but when you're describing someone's race/language/etc, you shouldn't.

Just because the word j a p is in Japanese, doesn't mean you should use the short form. It's a totally different meaning. It's like if the N word was part of the African American name, would you use the "N" word as the short form? huh.gif

Oh I see.

About the term Flip being used today, don't even get me started. I also have Filipino in my family heritage.

But there's a lot of topics in itself about Filipino identity, and other Filipinos have spoken up about it as well. So I'll just agree with you wink.gif

I hope the mods do not suspend us for this because it seems we're trying to have a civil discussion, and not trying to offend anyone.

I think the people who use it for short term, probably just don't care to say the name in it's entirety. The "N" word has different contexts as well. Like for example the "er" vs the "a" at the end. The younger generation, and in the West Coast it seems, tend to use the term "hello kitty" more openly...whether it's black, white, asian, latino...I've seen many of them just use it.

Also take Fat Joe vs J-Lo example, Fat Joe use the term hello kitty but nobody cares. When J-Lo used it, people were really upset. So there is a double-standard as well.

I think what's also interesting is that people are more likely to understand the situation when it's about black people feeling someone is racist towards them. However, when Asians have an issue more people more likely will have the "Get over it attitude".

For example, Rosie O'donnell...Spanish Basketball Team picture.
