Hey guys smile.gif
I'm hoping you guys can help me with some tips/tricks..
I'm a sophomore in college, and between all of my classes, labs, volunteering, and homework, I barely have time to sleep!

I'm usually always at my desk studying/doing work.

Do you guys have any tips for things I can do that won't take up much time? It's really unhealthy for me this way, but my grades absolutely have to come first tongue.gif

Thanks!

Honestly, I don't see how difficult it is to stop studying and go workout for an hour. Regardless if it's cardio/strength training/whatever. I'm in my 3rd year in university and i'm a business major and I still make time to go workout everyday for an hour. There really aren't any "tips/tricks".

*sees Makaveli also reading this topic, giving pro advice*

-Watch your posture, good posture will help burn more calories I read, versus slouching
-Stand up and stretch every 30 min.
-There are some really quick 8 minute ab/8 minute arm videos on youtube if you're just trying to keep toned
-Turbo Jam has a 20 minute workout video also

Try reading while you're on a treadmill.

I've seen a documentary before where an employer at an office tried to promote better fitness in the office by making his workers walk on a treadmill while they worked. Of course, the treadmill will only be going at like 1-2 miles per hour, but many of the workers lost 10+ pounds after doing it for a couple months.

Biochem major. I'm taking 20 credits, 6 additional hours of lab a week, 4 hours of research a week, EMT for 12 hours a week (night shift), plus all my clubs.

Spend less time on soompi and more time in the gym smile.gif.

Good point.
But I need to fit in a break somewhere..and the 10 mins on Soompi doesn't give me enough time to hit the gym

^studies show that even small bursts of exercise add up..so if u dont have time for a full hour at a time take a break while studying and maybe skip some rope for 5-10 min. or take a walk outside

Shoot when I was a nursing student. 8 hour clinicals plus theory classes, clubs, intramurals, & ROTC not including 3-5 hour day study sessions. It was hard to fit in work outs. But then there are other alternatives such as powerwalking to classes or buying a 10-20 min. work out dvd.

You'll figure it out it's all about time management wink.gif

Okay. You say you're doing all these things that takes time out of your hands. Make a chart/schedule of your weekly/daily activities, time specific, include all the breaks you give yourself to keep sane. You have 112 hours of wake time in a week (assuming you get a full 8 hrs of sleep each night). Let's see how you spend your time so we can help you do some time management.

If anything, while you study/read do your exercise on this compact elliptical. Heck do it while you're on soompi. Get dumbbells and do some weight lifting while studying. Do one arm at a time so you can have a hand free to flip pages, highlight, make notes or whatever. Lay down and do leg lifts while studying. Also, watching your posture will help you strengthen your core.

If you have friends, if you have time to volounteer, if you watch any tv, if you go out to eat occasionally ~

You have time to workout. Lots of people give excuses for things they never got to do in life. Yours is the most common.

Lot of great replies! What your parents and school doesn't teach is how to effectively organize your time and manage it so you can truly live an empowered lifestyle ~ You have to ask yourself how do truly successful people manage kids, loved ones, friends and family along with 4-5 jobs.

I can do a lot on the stairmill or a cycle machine when I do cardio ~ I'm studying for exams.

I can usually study while I'm working out. If I'm on a treadmill or whatever exercise machine, I bring my books along. If I'm running outside, I listen to lectures on my iPod.

But another thing that has helped me is just managing my time more efficiently. I try to consolidate most of my activities (homework, studying, volunteering) between or directly after classes, so I have at least some of my evening for myself and my friends. I go to sleep pretty early, and then I wake up at around 5 to go running before classes! I'm not saying that you should do exactly what I do, but there is always a way to fit working out into your schedule. Honestly, your grades and your health should be top priority. And when you exercise regularly, it gives you more energy and focus! Ultimately, that time you have put away to benefit your body will also benefit your mind.

I think you just need to learn to make time. if you are serious about having a healthy life style, then you will definitely make time. my college schedule was just as busy as yours. time management is something you need to learn.

Thanks for the tips for me, too!
I understand your situation since I'm a busy college student as well, but I think if you really wanted to, you could make it happen.
I'm not saying you have poor time management. But, I think you have to revise your time management.
Good luck with everything!

It's all about time management. I usually go to the gym in between classes or when i get home, go for a quick jog. I find exercising makes me concentrate better.

Hm that's how I was.
I would not excercise because I would tell myself I didn't have time.
But make time to excercise everyday.
30min-1hr won't hurt.
Actually it's beneficial.
It helps me to relax during times of stress.

Make the time then; revise your time management. I mean if President Obama has the time to exercise, you do too!

DO NOT READ OR STUDY WHILE WORKING OUT. Since your body is working hard burning calories your mind is less able to retain information. You shouldnt be studying all the time anyways, your brain needs a break eventually so just work out a little and get back to reading.

If you can go start topics on soompi, you definitely have enough time to pick out time to exercise.

I used to be the same way, too. I thought that because I went to university, had a full course load, and a job, that I had enough reasons to justify the lack of exercise. It really just took a simple power-off of the computer and an earlier morning wake-up to squeeze in those extra minutes to exercise.

Good luck smile.gif
