Crap.

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/21/health/r...cohol.html?_r=1

I have this problem (my screen name is in reference to that. I know. It's lame.) But I still enjoy drinking a couple beers with friends or at home watching a game (never on a date though. Too embarrassing. Then again, so is having to order a diet coke.)

I know there are a lot of fellow tomatoes out there. So what do you think about this? Plan on changing your drinking habits? Any embarrassing stories to share?

Luckily I'm one of the few who dont get that. I shared 2 bottles of champagne last night and a bottle of red tonight with no ill effects. But on a serious note, research like this should be taken with a kilo of salt until there are supporting findings. In any case, heavy drinking isn't good for your liver let alone your throat.

and I thought that if you get those flushes when you drink, it's a good thing?
I'm a terrible drinker and I don't drink much... but my face does go red after drinking alcohol. =\ I'm not so sure that if I go out to drink more often and build up my tolerance, whether I will flush less or not? o__O i'm not too sure.
I don't know... I guess the news may be considered 'crap'? Unless there are more evidence to support the fact.

I heard if you drink more often then your tolerance will build and you will not go as red, but I'm guessing it will increase your chances of throat cancer?

I'm as red as a tomato after not 1 drink but 1/4 of a drink, both my parents go red too.

i learned that the asian flush acts like your body's defense mechanism so you don't consume as much alcohol than others who don't get the asian flush and have a higher tolerance for it. So a higher risk for cancer is probably unlikely. It would make more sense for people who have a higher tolerance for alcohol and therefore drink alot more often to be at risk for cancer and other diseases

Consult a doctor if you're really concerned about this. Everyone's body has different reactions.

Have you ever seen normal Taiwanese or Korean people walking around on streets? Most of them have huge noses, small chinky eyes and flat noses and look nothing like those celebrities you see in dramas. And sorry, but most Korean celebrities you see on TV underwent a lot of plastic surgeries in order to look like what you see on TV. I think this should be well-known by all K-Pop-fans.

well it says if you get the "glow" you may have a higher risk, but actually drinking to get that glow doesnt increase the risk.......i thought i read an article a while back that says using mouthwash can get you cancer.

I didn't read the article, but the reason for the "asian flush" is because asians are deficient in one of the enzyme that metabolizes alcohol thus, the reaction seen.

Just thinking it out if you keep consuming alcohol of course you are more prone to get hepatic cancer and others if you have additional risk factors.
I'm that a**hole you paged at 3am for a surgery consult about a pt. in the ER complaining of abdominal pain

I've heard that, too.

Luckily, I don't get asian glow unless I'm drunk off my butt, which happens once in a blue moon.
There's some pill you can take to reduce your "asian glow"ness. I forgot what it's called, I'll ask around and come back. laugh.gif

Aziraphale, you're awesome haha.

i dont see how asian glow is related to a higher risk of cancer. It's just that theres a deficiency in the enzyme that breaks down the alcohol.

yeah, I thought it was attributable to the lack of an enzyme as well. either way, doubtful that it will cause me to stop consuming

LOL regardless of the glow or not, you are still going to get some form of cancer if you keep on drinking.

Oddly I find that esophageal cancer in asians is rare (and I mean extremely rare). I work in a radiology department and we do fluoroscopic exams to study swallowing and function of the esophagus (sometime to find cancers) and i've almost never seen it in asian patients.
