I really wanna eat grapefruits coz i've read a lot of health benefits from them...

but my mom says that i'll get a stomach ulcer if i eat 3 daily (1 with my breakfast, lunch, dinner).. i'm not skipping my meal itself... i just wanna add to it ^^... would it be ok? She says that it would make a hole in my stomach because the acid eats through the mucus?

T.T...

Haha, my mom told me the same exact thing, except instead of grapefruit, it was spicy noodles.
I'm pretty sure you're stomach's in no danger of being worn through by acid, but don't overload on the grapefruit. The nutritional benefits are good, but if you eat too much, it could cause problems for your body. My younger brother once went a week for so taking in a lot of Vitamin C (with oranges); his skin turned a strange color and he got very sick.

Everything in moderation.

But if you're taking certain medications then you should avoid grapefruit. That's because grapefruit contains a substance that interacts with a long list of drugs regularly found in medicines.

I would stick to only one a day, and make sure you eat something else with it.

I once ate a box of fresh pineapple chunks and the acid tore up the inside of my mouth.

that's correct. grapefruit is an inhibitor of the CP450 enzyme and therefore depending on what medication if you are on any can make grapefruit a contraindication.

Stomach ulcers are caused by uncontrolled growth of the bacteria Helicobacter pylori. The guys who found this got a Nobel Prize tongue.gif

Grapefruit, as mentioned above, can interact with some medications... so if you are on medications, ask your pharmacist or doctor if you can take the drug with grapefruit.

Actually, H. Pylori is only implicated in 70% of gastric ulcer whereas it is 100% in duodenal ulcer. wink.gif

either way, you couldn't get me to drink grapefruit laugh.gif

Three grapefruits a day might be too many. Your mom is right about the acid. Also, the poster who mentioned grapefruit (or anything acidic, for that matter) interacting with medications is right-it can reduce the effectiveness of certain compounds. One grapefruit a day would be plenty to give you health benefits. Also, three grapefruits a day might start to damage the enamel of your teeth. (Another fun side effect of too much acid)

You'll get sick of them faster and stop eating them completely too.

"Early results from US researchers suggests that eating grapefruit really does help people lose weight, and could help reduce the risk of developing diabetes. The study centered on an experiment involving 100 obese people. The group who ate half a grapefruit with each meal lost an average of 3.6 lb (1.6kg) over twelve weeks, compared with a placebo group who lost an average 0.5lb (0.2kg). Some patients lost as much as 10lbs. After the meal, the "grapefruit groups" also had reduced levels of insulin, the hormone which enables the body to metabolise sugars. Glucose levels were also lower, suggesting a more efficient sugar metabolism. From the Society of Chemical Industry:Eating Grapefruit Does Help Weight Loss, Could Prevent Diabetes"

so since this is a study by doctors and scientists... i guess 1.5 per day is okay
every once in awhile when i do buy grapefruits, i would sit there and eat them like oranges..
peel them and just eat it whole.. i ate at least 2 per day
nothing bad ever happened to me..

Whether grapefruits are beneficial or dangerous to my body, all I know is that it's great for my bowel movement.. also a great substitute when I don't have time to get red papayas.

I only eat a couple a week, so 3 a day sounds excessive to me. Too much citric acid is not good for your teeth.
