"Some parents believe that preschool is a valuable opportunity to enrich the lives of children and prepare them for formal educations, while others think that shuffling kids off to early childhood programs is unnecessary and inappropriate."

I went to preschool when i was little and i didn't really think it did anything for me. i didnt learn anything and it didn't help me to become socially outgoing. i kno a lot of parents think that sending their children to pre-k will make their kids more socially outgoing and also the govt has been doing research on the benefits of preschool..

Lets discuss!!

Sending children to preschool enriches their social skills gives children a headstart in life. I was sent to preschool in England, my nieces and nephews were sent to preschool, we all graduated ahead of our age group and entered University at a young age. Doing this helped us to grasp and understand detachment from parents, forming and building a sense of independence, vocabulary, i.e ADC's and 123"s all around its beneficial to children to start learning at a young age,if you want your children to have a headstart in life. smile.gif

Well I went to preschool and it was very helpful for me since I had just moved to the U.S. and didn't know any english so in preschool I was able to immediately pick it up unconsciously. In addition, it was a place for my parents to dump me while they had to go to work and also I was very outgoing as a result of preschool because we would always do activities together, projects, plays, etc. Preschool gives an environment for social skills to be developed in a child that would need to be developed in the park or something otherwise such as sharing, getting along with people you like/do not like etc.

i went to preschool and it was really fun, you get a day playing with other kids, learning things in advance, and make friends... it's pretty young, but i still remember that it has helped me for when i went into kindergarten and onwards because i didn't have trouble picking up stuff at all.

I remember them correcting my hand too, i was a lefty and they'd smack my hand with a ruler to convert me to right hand.

I agree. Some kids are able to skip pre-school and do very well. But for others it eases the transition for when they go to Kindergarten where they have more work to do (like those book reports I've been seeing more and more Kindergartners coming home with).

same here.
I actually work at a preschool now so I can see how it's helpful, but it's definitly not necessary.

Honestly the only thing I remember from preschool is making really gross caramel apples (which I now hate to this day), and bringing a unicorn plushie for show and tell which made me cry because I didn't want to talk in front of everyone. sweatingbullets.gif Maybe it was because I started a year earlier than everyone.

I don't really think it matters.. I don't even think I learned anything in preschool haha. I learned counting and abc's in kindergarden.
Maybe its good if you want them to socialize with other kiddies?

I went to preschool. I plan on homeschooling my children, so no preschool for them.

i went. the only memory i have of it is coloring with this table full of girls, and then seeing one of them stick a piece of red crayon up her nose, so the teachers were trying to get it out. oh, and another time i fell on the playground full of gravel while riding a tricycle, and my mom came and found me all bloodied and said they should not be making us play on gravel.

anyway, i wouldn't say it did me any harm, but i'm not sure it was the most enlightening experience. i guess i have no opinion here.

Preschool can help with social interaction at an early age, as it is known (I read a paper somewhere) that developing social skills at a younger age is easier than developing them at an older age.

However, it ultimately still comes down to the individual.

I went to preschool, but I think it simple opened the doors to more about the world for me.

studies show that there isn't a significant benefit from preschooling and that kids do not necessarily learn more a a result. however, I figure kids learn so quickly at that age, it can't hurt anyway right?

I think it traumatized me about school. I hated it throughout the time I was there and knew school sucked before kindergarten. I am told I always got yelled at because I refused to take naps (I had declared I never want to naps) and I cried every time I was dropped off there. But I think I may have been clingy and that was most likely the cause of why it sucked to me.

Preschool was fun. The memories are nice. Did it help me academically? Ehhhh...not really...lol.

If I do have kids, I probably would send them to pre-school. Its a good way to get them exposed to other people their age, and different cultures too.
