So I'll be entering high school next year,
but they want us to have our language selective and such filled out now.
Well, I got into Spanish II, but I think that French sounds really nice.
However, I'm wondering if colleges looked at the language (probably yes),
and I wanted to know your opinion on my situation.

i'd personally go w/ spanish 2
spanish (from what i heard) is easier than french.
i can't confirm this b/c i never took french
but spanish tends to have words more similar to english than does french.

the key is maintaining good grades, in pretty high level classes.
if you don't follow my logic, i'll elaborate haha.

yup definitely spanish 2 over french. i used to debate with myself over this too cuz i thought french was such a sexy language haha. but im glad i went with spanish cuz i've heard too many horror stories about french about even the smartest people i know who got D's.

i really suggest you take spanish. i'm currently in AP and its not even that hard. except im pissing my pants b/c im not ready for the AP test. but thats a different story haha.

those two comments above dont correlate with my school. haha. cause all my friends, and i mean ALL, are taking french, and im taking spanish. and they say french is uber fun. but i think that depends on the teacher/school.
but id say spanish. cause spanish is a language that more and more people are speaking, esp. in ca.

..i think.

haha idk my teachers say that. anyways spanish isnt too hard. just pay attention in class..and try to pronounce correctly. i blow and pronunciation.
haha.

i had to make the same decision when i went to highschool too !
it was either spanish 2 I or chinese 1
but since i've learned spanish for 3 years, why waste it and learn a different language?
so i've decided to continue learning spanish.

i don't regret it. besides, if you hate spanish then you can always switch junior year.
my counselor said that colleges want students to take at least 2 years (consistently) of the same language.

first how'd you get into spanish 2?
from some help at french from my friends, basically they're similar.
i think you should do a pro and con list.
whichever works in the end.

i took spanish I this year. it's just whatever, but a lot of stuff to remember, but doesn't that go to every foreign language?
i don't think you should always do what would look good on your transcript, but something that suits your taste
and something you would dedicate your time to.

Well, if you're in California, I suggest taking Spanish 2 to get your language requirements done for UC faster. But I take French, and it's seriously really easy for me. The thing is, Spanish is seemingly easier than French when you're just learning, but it's the opposite once you get more advanced. Plus, 1/3 of English words are French words, cognates, or are influenced/similar to French words. It's not hard to guess what some words mean. I'd say, once you get the hang of conjugating and the whole grammar stuff (no helping verbs in French), just learn the vocab and it's pretty much easy from there.

Some French words that are similar in English:
amusante, sympathique, scientifique, histoire, regarder, confus, téléphoner, blasphème, cinéma, théâtre, hôtel, système, animaux, adorer, minutes, inviter, attendre, bicyclette, problème, centre, admirer, aider, inscription, finalement, anniversaire, décider, voyage, cousin, absolutement, général, famille, professeur, musique, garage, café, restaurant, cuisine, extraordinaire, comédie, musée, intéressant, pique-nique, rester, content, dîner, occasion, etc etc (heck I think et cetera is French too btw)

So yeah, a LOT of words are from French. Haha. But whatever you want to take is fine (:

Well, my average in my Spanish class was really high,
so they placed me into Spanish II. But that's a really good idea (Pros&Cons)

Thank you everyone for your replies (:
I really appreciate it greatly.

If your state requires you to have X number of years of the same foreign language, go with Spanish.
If not, try French.
I take french biggrin.gif
It's pretty easy, actually.

But Spanish would be more useful in the long run.

It doesn't matter which you take as long as you continue taking it. Most colleges want 3-4 years of a foreign language.

I think you should take whichever you're more interested in.
A college isn't going to pick an applicant over you because he/she took a higher language course.
the most important thing is your grade in the class.

Personally, I would take French because it seems like a way cooler language. france is like the capital of delicious food, romance, and hot european guys! 2 years of spanish in middle school was so boring.

FRENCHH biggrin.gif!

It's not anymore harder than Spanish is. People just get intimidated by the oh so Euro pronunciation, but it's not bad. Same format with conjugating verbs and such.. Plus it sounds pretty~

Just choose the one you're more interested in.

Well, if you're planning on taking French for the rest of high school, maybe.

But I think it's better to stick with something you already sort of know?

High school is 5x difficult and time-consuming than middle school LOL. I'll tell you that.
(Unless your middle school has a higher standard of learning)

Besides, if you decide to stop taking Spanish after Spanish 4, you're pretty much DONE with it.
And you'll have an extra slot in your classes for senior year~ xP

I'm not sure how the American school system works (I'm assuming you're American - if you're not, I apologize), but I took both before and I think they're VERY similar... D: It wasn't odd to get the two languages mixed up, because the general structures are pretty alike.

Spanish was hands down more easy for me though, but I took Spanish after... around 6 years of Canadian French (which I flunked my way through, unfortunately sad.gif). It's easier to speak than French is, but I think if you have the basis of one down then you're pretty set for the other. xD My spanish teacher was fluent in both. xD
keep the faith

I'm like other soompiers, thinking french was sexier;
I'm taking French 1 right now (i'm a freshmen btw).
I took Spanish in middle school.
Both have it's pros and cons.
Grammar-wise, spanish is easier.
but it really depends on your opinion.

i took french and it wasn't hard for me anyway.
but I'd stick with spanish since you're gonna be in level 2 so that means one less year of language to take in high school =D
and you might get confused if you switch to french.

they're both latin based languages so there are SOME similarities.
musical fun...♥

Colleges don't really care what language you take as long as you take a language lol.

Just a matter of preference. You should partially decide on which language you take depending on the French and Spanish teachers at your school as well. French may be an uber cool and pretty language but if you have a crap-ass French teacher at your school, then you are doomed. tongue.gif (Like my school, the Spanish teachers are amazing while the French teachers just can't teach for their lives.)

So yeah, just take that into consideration. If you have good teachers for both languages then, doesn't matter! But if you have already taken Spanish 1 year in middle school, and you decide to take Spanish for another 4 years for high school, then you'll have 5 years of language under your belt. (Like I will when I get into Spanish 5/AP Spanish next year. laugh.gif) It would especially look good if you plan on pursuing something like foreign relations, international business, or etc in college.

But if you want to learn French because you're interested in it, then by all means go for it.
