The topic title is self explanatory...

So would go out with someone, if you knew they had an artificial limb?

This idea came to me, when watching Friends and Chandler found out his date had an artificial leg lol laugh.gif

Why do you assume that there is any difference between a person with prosthetic limbs vs. one who doesn't? It could be hurtful for you to make such a distinction when in essence each person has something different that characterizes who they are. I definitely would date and love him just the same.

^

The question wasn't meant to be seen as hurtful, so I apologize if it does so. It was more just of a general wondering, like I said it was inspired from Friends tongue.gif and I never actually stated that perhaps having an artificial limb would define the personality of the person. Perhaps my question came out wrong. It was just a thought, and something I never really considered about, you know? So I just wanted to see what others thought.

I have buddies that I went to war with that lost limbs in country.

From what I seen in soompi, most the people seem to be little kids. I think this thread should be closed before some 12 year old kid comes in this thread and gives their 2 cents.

^ lol, is that me ?
Ummm, I don't think I would mind...I mean if you love someone then you love them no matter what ?
But then again I've never really been in 'love' so what do I really know ?
I think I'd be creeped if they had a prosthetic leg though (No, I'm not trying to be mean/hurtful it's my personal opinion)
but who knows?

Sure why not. . . .its not like the person has smelly breath or a horrible personality....its not like the dude is Edward Cullen.

Actually, you can make that distinction by physical appearance. Physical distinction applies only in the case that if it is a unique feature possessed only by that person in the specific populace. You can't say, look at the black haired person, in a room with people that only have black hair. In a normal population a person with a prosthetic limb is different, so therefore they can be identified by that distinction. The question has nothing to do with loving him, I'm sure if your loved one got into an accident and lost a limb, you'd still love him. However, what if the person was a complete stranger? It would be much less likely in this case. (Note: I did not say it was the proper thing to do by identifying a person by artificial limbs, but it is a legitimate form of identification.)

To the topic starter, this is an interesting question that you pose. I guess people have to get over the idea that part of their lover is artificial, but I think on a biological level prosthetic limbs are unattractive. I say these because the individual would seem less physically fit and therefore is less appealing. However, I think I would be able to overcome the issue of artificiality and the lack of physical capabilities. Also, the question of what other malfunctions may this individual possess is raised by the idea by their lack of symmetry. Furthermore, the possibility that you maybe the ladled with the responsibility of being the caretaker for this individual in the future becomes an issue of high alert. Although I must admit, the individual with a prosthetic limb must be pretty amazing to be able to befriend and attract me (Highly unlikely).

it wouldn't matter as long as their personality doesn't get affected in anyway.
& they don't let it be a problem in our relationship

Seraphyx, fortunately, we are more evolved in the animal kingdom to pick more than what we consider the direct "physically fitness". I agree that we, like many other creatures, want to increase our own fitness by choosing the most desirable, symmetrical, and attractive mate to reproduce our offspring. However, humans also do have indirect fitness choice as well (a good parent, good personality, a stable home, resources... these are some example). Therefore, by saying that the individuals' with prosthetic legs are considered reproductively unfit and unattractive, then you are overgeneralizing. Therefore, I don't think using physical fitness to explain this situation is appropriate because you are assuming everybody is only after this "direct" fitness. Also, there are more than just that factor to date somebody. Do you only date somebody because they are physically fit to reproduce? I sure hope not.

Lastly, you are stereotyping when you say that there is a prospective responsibility in taking care of the individuals. What makes you think they can't take care of themselves just as well as you and I? I have family members who requires prosthetic legs because they lost them during the world. They are still as autonomous, strong, and happy individuals. Anyways, I am not trying to attack you. I know these are your ideas and thoughts, but I care to differ and express my opinions. In general, I hope that humans, as advanced and educated as we are now, will not be shallow as this.

Maybe I would.
Since I have been educated about people with artificial limbs, I am more open minded about them, and I have learnt not to discriminate against them.

Why not? Why should an artificial limb stop me from dating someone? If they're a great person, it shouldn't matter at all.

Yes, I would. Why not? It's not like he has extreme intense mental problems and intends on killing everyone he sees.

This reminds me of my trip to Taiwan last summer where I got an innocent little blister from wearing flats and for some reason it got majorly infected. I think it was blood poisoning dry.gif and then my foot swelled etc and I was limping for about two weeks and finally I went to the hospital and the doctors said that if I waited another day or two the infection would have spread so far that my foot would have to be amputated.

So if that had happened and my bf broke up with me because of that, it just goes to show how shallow people are.

Having had to work in places where I see this, I don't think it'd matter for me.

Yeah absolutely. I'm aware everyone says that but a good interesting person is hard to find, real limb or not.
